Page 2 Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends in Christ,

This week, we will begin with Ash Wednesday, February 10th, our annual Lenten Journey within the Year of Mercy. Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, states the eternal truth of the Gospel that “no one,” man or woman, no sinner nor saint should and can be excluded from God’s mercy. It is our responsibility therefore, as those who have experienced God’s love and mercy, to be conduits of His love and mercy to others. This will be our focus this Lenten Season.

In the season of Lent which lasts for 40 days, we intensify our relationship with God through prayer, fast-ing and almsgiving. I pray that you can take a brief moment of prayer and meditation and ask the Holy Spirit what you need to do in addition or give up within this season. It is not either or but doing both. Prayer must bring us to a deeper experience of God’s mercy so that we can be merciful to others. Our fasting should connect us to our brothers and sis-ters all over the world who have less than what we have. It should be a means of encouragement so we can be merciful and share our excess with others and of course, almsgiving cannot be an outward show but a thoughtful expression of God’s love and mercy.

A good reflection for the Season of Lent will be on the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy: May the Lord help each one of us and our entire parish community to imitate His love and mercy so that “no one” will be excluded from receiving God’s love and mercy.

Please participate in our parish Lenten events listed on the next page, and especially consider coming to our Light of the World Retreat 2/19-22, Be Reconciled on 3/16 and to our parish mission from 3/6 to 3/8. This weekend we also distribut-ed our annual Lenten booklets for you to use as a spiritual aid during this Lenten season.

Prayerfully,

Fr. Godwin

You are invited to shine in the light of Jesus Christ, our Lord,

Savior and Brother

Please join us at the Light of the World Retreat

February 19-22, 2016

Do not be concerned about where you are at on your faith journey. Jesus will meet you where you are, take your hand and guide you – if you let Him. There is no special preparation for this retreat. You do not need to bring anything. Just come! Snacks will be provided Friday and Monday nights. All meals will be provided Saturday and Sunday.

You will not be bored! The retreat is filled with insights, fresh perspectives, humor, really good food, real life testimonies, and lively discussions. It will touch your heart, open your mind and deepen your faith – GUARANTEED!

We ask that you commit to all four days of the retreat. The retreat builds on the experiences of the day before so it is neces-sary to attend the entire retreat. We may be able to work around the need to miss an hour or two if necessary

Jubilee Year of Mercy Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

During this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis calls us to share with everyone the tender compassion of God that we our-selves have experienced. In today's Gos-pel, Luke uses a special Greek word con-veying just such tenderness. In the other

Gospels, Jesus calls the disciples to be "fishers," haleis, the same word that means catching fish with hooks or nets, to be killed and eaten. But Luke uses zogron, from zoe or "life," meaning "catch or gather people alive," as animal lovers capture without harming, rescue from "the wild" for a better life, and protect in aquarium or zoo, ten-derly cared for by professionals committed to the crea-tures' well-being. So in Luke's vision--and Pope Francis' as well--we who have been "caught alive" by God's mercy ourselves are to become "missionaries of mercy" during this Jubilee Year of Mercy, rescuing fellow sinners from danger and gathering them into Jesus' community to enjoy fullness of life. -Peter Scagnelli, Copyright (c) J. Society of St. Vincent DePaul Presents

HOPE TAKES ACTION Fellow parishioners:

The Society of St Vincent de Paul is developing a program called ‘Hope Takes Action’ and we need your help. Our vi-sion is to “End Poverty through systemic change – one per-son, one neighborhood, one community at a time.”

SVDP districts and conferences across the country are bringing a facilitated program to individuals; a program which will empower individuals in poverty to transition to self-sufficiency with community support. We are building ‘Bridges Out of Poverty’ in the McHenry area.

Please come to a one hour meeting where the “Bridges” process can be explained in greater detail. Hopefully you will be inspired to donate a few hours of your time over the next year to help those in our community who need you.

Looking forward to seeing you at one of the following meet-ings:

Cold winter months bring increases in heating costs as we all try to stay warm. For those strug-gling with bills, these are especially difficult months. St. Vincent de Paul recently assisted a young family of 4 with their ComEd bill and with

food. Both parents lost their jobs within a few months of each other, going a full month with no income at all. While one par-ent has since found a job, they fell behind in their payment plant to ComEd. Thanks to your donations to the Poor Box, SVdP was able to make a partial payment to ComEd to con-tinue the family’s electric services, which were crucial for their asthmatic son.

Mark 12:31 The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.

The next PADS lunch making will be on Tues-day, February 9th at 6pm in Muldoon Hall and Kitchen. Thank you to everyone who has volunteered to help make lunches. If you care to make donations of bread, lunch-

meat or cheese, please call or e-mail Gail Cooper at (815)546-5307 or [email protected]. We are very for-tunate that we can help others in their time of need. Thank you and God Bless!

Baptism of Infants: To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please consider scheduling your child’s Baptism before your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is required for the parents. This class is offered on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is required and you may take the class before your child is born.

Sacraments

Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an over-view of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be regis-tered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Patrick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.
