“You are my Disciples: Whoever remains in Me and I in him will bear much fruit.”

Page 2 Twenty-Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends in Christ,

Last Sunday the readings brought us to contemplate on our baptismal experience: our identity as children of God but also our mission of proclaiming God’s kingdom in words and actions. This weekend we are reminded that this mission is not for the faint hearted. At the same time, we are reminded that it is not impossible but a possible reality that we can accomplish.

The model of our mission is a person who has given His life away again and again. He gave it in His sacrificial love, mercy, healing of the sick and the oppressed but finally by giving His life in

death on the cross. To follow His example can sometimes land us in suffering because we are called to preach things that are not popular in the world’s calculation. This may include ideas of marriage, life, and or how to deal with the less privileged as stated in the letter of St. James. St. James calls our attention to the mission of matching our faith with good works in how we respond to the needs of our less privileged brothers and sisters.

Living our mission calls us to imitate Jesus as our model. After His identity in the Gospel (Mk 8:27-35) as the Son of God He pointed out His mission as a suffering servant. “He began to teach them that the son of man must suffer…be rejected…be killed and will rise after the third day.” Following Him and acting in accord with His will and the teaching of His Church can sometime bring us rejection, persecution, and difficulties. But the triumph also awaits us. The prophet Isaiah alluded to this triumph in the first reading (Isaiah 50: 4-9). “The Lord God opens my ears (ephphatha- from last Sunday to the blind and deaf- our baptismal reality). I have not rebelled…not turned back…I did not shield from buffets and spitting…The Lord God is my help therefore I am not disgraced…. I shall not be put to shame…the Lord God is my help, who will prove me wrong.”

St. James tell us that “...faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead” (James 2:14-18). What good is it to profess faith without practicing it? Such faith has “no power to save.” St. James is very clear, faith may be the central response in our relationship to God; but faith, like love, must find expression in our actions if it is to be real. It must be about our identity- God’s children but also about our mission, that is living our faith in good works knowing that even if we meet opposition and persecution, God will always be with and for us.

In Christ,

Father Godwin

Spiritual direction is a "gathering together" of two in the name of Jesus, the spiritual director and the directee, to help a person to develop a closer relationship with God and to better discern how the Holy Spirit is leading in their life.

If you are looking for spiritual direction, please feel free to contact Deacon Craig at [email protected].

That Man Is You New Season Begins September 11, 2021

Jesus did not say to the Jews, “I’ve come to save you from Roman oppression and taxation.” Christ did not promise a worldly kingdom.

In fact, He said, “In the world you will have tribulation ... yet I have overcome the world ... My kingship is not of this world ... My kingdom is in your midst ... My kingdom is within you!” The kingdom of God is among us. Indeed, it is here now. For where the King is, there is His Kingdom. Let us live with an eternal perspective. May we become the men we need to rebuild the kingdom! Join us for food, fellowship and faith. We meet on Saturday Mornings beginning at 6:30AM (meetings last about an hour) in the parish library. All men are welcome. Learn more at tmiy.org.

personal circumstances. This month, SVdP distributed numerous bags of food and gift certificates to Aldi’s to help families who had lost their jobs or those who had taken relatives into their homes. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.
