Pastor’s Corner
Dear Parishioners, Faith Formation begins this weekend. I want to express my thanks to Julie Bradley and to all the catechists who work hard to share the faith with the young people of our parish. We know that it isn’t the catechists alone who can pass on the Faith! Our Church teaches that it is at home in the “domestic church” where children are first introduced to the Lord. Pope Francis has encouraged parents saying, “We hope that the Lord gives this grace to parents: to not exile themselves from the religious education of their children. And this can only be done with love, tenderness and patience.” Let’s pray for all of our parish families who journey together in faith! Speaking of young people, we had youth group last Sunday evening. Out of the 20 youth that participated, thankfully a few were scouts and were able to build a nice bonfire! We had some pizza and s’mores. I shared with them that the early Christians would often gather in the evenings around a fire to pray and to learn about Jesus. We prayed the words of an ancient hymn called “Hail, Gladdening Light”:
And now we have come To the sun’s hour of rest
The lights of evening round us shine We sing to the Father, Son, Spirit divine…
It was a really fun night. Keep your eyes peeled for our future meeting topics. We are planning to gather the last Sunday night of every month. Lastly, our pilgrims returned from their journey to Philadelphia to meet Pope Francis late Last week. They brought your prayers and intentions along with them, and they brought back wonderful stories and some energy to share with us in return! The Pope’s visit has opened so many hearts to an encounter with the Lord. Now it is our turn to keep the momentum going. The Pope showed us just how powerful kindness, warmth, mercy, prayer, and welcoming can be, all in the name of the Lord. He also showed us how easy it is for us to do these things too! In Christ,

Faith Formation News
Faith Formation classes for KG-8th Grade will begin TODAY, Sunday, October 4th, after the 9:30AM Mass. Parents are asked to escort students to the school cafeteria and stay for opening announcements.
An orientation for all Confirmation 1 & 2 students and parents will take place TODAY, October 4th, after the 9:30AM Mass in the school auditorium. Our program changes year to year, so even if you have participated in Confirmation prep in previous years it is still important to attend this meeting. Schedules and other important information will be distributed. Thank you!
Attention Confirmation students and parents: Save the date for a special event! Sunday, October 18th beginning 9:00AM in the auditorium. More info will be given at the orientation session today.
No Faith Formation classes will be held Columbus Day weekend - next Sunday, October 11th. Classes will resume on Sunday, October 18th.
Interested in Becoming Catholic? Mor do you know anyone who has expressed curiosity in joining the Church or being baptized? Are you Catholic but have not received all your sacraments (First Communion and Confirmation)? Beginning in the Fall, a group will meet here at St. Paul’s during the year to inquire into the Catholic faith, to come to know Jesus through the Gospels, to learn the teachings of the Church, and to pray and prepare to receive the Sacraments at Easter.

St. Pius X Respect Life Committee will again sponsor the Annual Walk for Life on Sunday, October 18, 2015. The walk will begin at 12 Noon in front of St. Pius X Church, Westerly. This will begin a three-mile prayerful walk. Walkers will process through the town of Westerly, then walk to the Tomb of the Unborn at St. Sebastian’s Cemetery for a brief prayer service. The walk will end at St. Pius X Church with a light reception for all participants. All proceeds benefit local pro-life community ministries. We are encouraging families to participate. Alpha Talks are Coming to St. Paul's
"Since running the Alpha program in my parish I have seen lukewarm Catholics come alive, nonbelievers come to Christ, and committed Christians becoming more committed and being formed as leaders. I consider Alpha not to be just another program that can be put on by a church, but as the program at the heart of renewal in the local church. The Alpha Talks will begin at St. Paul's in a little over a week from now. It's time to invite friends, neighbors, family members and co-workers to come and see what it's all about. There is NO long-term commitment - just come for a free meal, a short talk and a friendly discussion in a small group setting on Wednesday, October 14th at 6:15PM. If they like it, they can come back the following week - it's that simple. Please stop by the table in the vestibule or the easel near the side door this weekend to pick up invitations that you can give out this week. Alpha team members will also be available to answer your questions.
St. Paul's Supports Alpha
Thanks to all of the parishioners who have helped to plan, organize and prepare for our Alpha program. It is an exciting and wonderful experience to be praying, working and laughing together. This is truly a fun bunch! We would love to welcome anyone who would like to join the team, which consists of three mini-teams:
*The Prayer Team is led by Deacon Paul. If you would like to join the Alpha Prayer Team please contact him at 461-5734 or [email protected] to find out how you can participate. Prayer Team members are encouraged to come out and pray for Alpha during the Wednesday evening sessions, but if you're not available on Wednesdays, Deacon Paul can give you some other ideas of how to support Alpha in prayer at a time that is better for you.
*The Task Force is led by Mark Habershaw. On Wednesdays between 5:30-6:00PM his team will set up the cafeteria, be ready to welcome our guests, serve the meal at 6:30, and clean up at 7:00. Anyone who can come out once or twice on a Wednesday to help will be welcomed. Or, if you like to cook, perhaps you could provide food once or twice during the Alpha series. A meal planning meeting will take place on Monday, October 5th, to decide what will be served for dinner each week. *The Small Group Discussion Team is led by Julie Bradley. The small group discussion is where guests are encouraged to share their thoughts and feelings regarding the topic of the evening. Small group hosts and helpers are trained to facilitate discussion, but do not teach, correct, judge or reject anyone's comments. The small group is a safe, caring and welcoming place where everyone is encouraged to share openly and honestly. Life Chain Sunday - On Sunday, October 4th, Life Chain Sunday will be held throughout the State. Please join us here at St. Paul Church from 2-3PM for an hour of prayer in support of all human life-from conception to natural death. We will stand on the corner of Broad St. and Warwick Ave. in silent witness and prayer. Nine Weeks for Life - St. Paul’s is hosting the Pro-Life Novena sponsored by the Little Flower House in Providence. For 9 Saturdays beginning on Saturday, September 26th, there will be a Mass at 9AM and rosary in front of the abortion clinic on Broad Street.
Our Lady of the Rosary Wednesday October 7th is the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. The Rosary is the queen of Catholic devotions. It is the spiritual solace of Catholics. It embraces mental and oral prayer. Pope Urban VIII called the Rosary the multiplier of Christians. Gregory XIV called it the procurer of grace and glory of God. Paul V called it the treasury of grace. Come to Mass this Wednesday or offer a Rosary in gratitude for Our Blessed Mother!
