TWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME HEALING AND SALVATION

The readings today speak of healing and salva on. In Second Kings, Naaman, a commander of the army of the king of Syria, develops leprosy. He goes to a stranger, a prophet from Israel,

when no one else can cure his disease. Much to his surprise, a er a simple bath in the river, he is cured. In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus cures ten lepers and sends them to the priest. Only one, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus for his cure and only he hears the words, “Your faith has saved you.” The psalm and Timothy remind us that salva on involves jus ce, kindness, and faithfulness and forever links us with Jesus. In a world as broken as ours, both healing and salva on are necessary. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

A Column by Fr. Tom

Looking Through Stained Glass

The Passion

In our last column, we examined how the Son of God became man through the Incarnation, thus beginning the work of salvation that is His Mission. In this column, we continue our examination of Christ’s saving mission through His Passion and Death. In our next column, we will see the completion of the mission in the Resurrection.

“For our sake, He was crucified under Pontius Pilate, He suffered Death and was buried…” These lines from the Creed express several truths about Jesus’ Passion. First, Jesus died “for our sake.” Jesus did not die for His own sake, but for ours. Jesus, who is without sin, died for each one of us, who are sinners. In Paul’s Letter to the Romans, he expresses Jesus’ sacrifice in this way: “For Christ, while we were still helpless, yet died at the appointed time for the ungodly. Indeed, only with difficulty does one die for a just person, though perhaps for a good person one might even find courage to die. But God proves his love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us.” [RM 5:6-8]

“He was crucified under Pontius Pilate…” As a human being, Jesus’ ministry happened in time, and so did His death. Our Creed reminds us that Jesus died during the prefecture of Pontius Pilate. Pontius Pilate is a person of history, so this line of the Creed reminds us that Jesus too was alive as a man of history, and also that He was crucified specifically during this time period. Also, this line of the Creed states that Jesus’ death was at the hands of the Romans. In the past, some people have participated in anti-Semitic speech and action because of perceived deicide (the murder of God) on the part of the Jewish people; however, our Creed firmly lays Jesus’ death on Pontius Pilate.

“He suffered death and was buried…” Through His death and burial, we are once again reminded that Jesus is fully human. Some heresies (untruths

about the faith) try to explain the Crucifixion (and the subsequent Resurrection) by saying that Jesus never really died, but was merely asleep. However, we believe that indeed He did die. In fact, in the Gospel accounts of the Passion, we are told of the certainty of Jesus’ death. In John’s Gospel, we are told: “When they came to Jesus and saw that he was already dead, they did not break his legs, but one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out.” [JN 19:33-34] Without going into a complicated and lengthy medical explanation, the blood and water that flowed out of Jesus are said to have been signs that Jesus had indeed died. Of course, the occur-rence of death is further confirmed by Jesus’ burial. Jesus was not only buried, but remained in the tomb for three days.

Perhaps one question remains: Did God die on the Cross? For an answer to this question, we return to our belief that Jesus is fully human and fully divine. [cf. CCC, 464] “Have among yourselves the same attitude that is also yours in Christ Jesus, who, though He was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, He emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, He humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross.” [Phil 2:5-8] The human Jesus died on the Cross, but certainly God did not die. God is the source of all being; therefore, God cannot die. If God ever died, all being – all existence – would cease to exist.

In our next column, we explore the Resurrection as the completion of our salvation.

Challenge Questions: In what ways can I bring real hope to those whose lives are under attack today? Find out more at:

www.respectlife.org

Christ Our Hope: In Every Season of Life

"Those who are most vulnerable, rather than receiving the protection they deserve, are all too often seen as a burden and as expendable. As new attacks on human life continue to emerge, we can be tempted to despair, but Christ instead offers us unfailing hope. Hope is not false optimism or empty positivity. Christian hope is something much more profound and goes to the very depths of our identity as followers of Christ." (Catechism of the Catholic Church 1817)

Registered Parishioners: Please help keep our census current by advising us of any changes of address, phone numbers, and family additions or deletions.
