Introductory Rites During these initial ritual mo-ments, the assembly becomes one in mind, heart, and voice in the worship of the Eternal Triune God.

The Procession and Entrance Hymn The ministers, Deacon and Priest enter the church. The assembly turns and watches with expec-tancy as the Word of God en-ters. When the Deacon and Priest reach the sanctuary, they make a profound reverence to-ward the tabernacle out of re-spect and reverence for the sac-ramental presence of the Lord contained therein. Then, they approach the altar of sacrifice and kiss it, for it is a symbol of Christ himself.

Sign of the Cross To make the sign of the cross, use your right hand and as the priest says “In the name of the Father,” touch your finger tips to your forehead. Then as he says “and of the Son,” touch your fingertips of your right hand to the middle of your chest near your heart. Lastly, as he says, “and of the Holy,” touch your fingertips to your left shoulder and as he says “Spirit,” to your right shoulder. In this manner, we mark ourselves with the sign of the cross upon which our Sav-ior Jesus Christ saved us, we also become more consciously aware that we are in the presence of the Eternal Triune God. Greeting The priest greets those assembled using a greeting which echoes the greetings used in Jewish prayer and in the Pauline letters.

Penitential Act To prepare ourselves to cele-brate the sacred mysteries of Jesus Christ and the salvation he gives us, we recall our sins and pray for God’s forgiveness to be granted to each and all of us. At times, the litany “Lord have mer-cy” is prayed in the ancient Greek form “Kyrie, eleison,” link-ing us to our ancestors in faith and reminding ourselves of the universality of God’s mercy and of our faith.

October 15, 2017 Twenty-Eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

(Please stand)

In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God and the communion of the Holy

Spirit be with you all. And with your Spirit.

Brothers and sisters, let us acknowledge our sins, and so prepare ourselves to celebrate the sacred mysteries. … Kyrie eleison (Lord have Mercy) Kyrie eleison (Lord have Mercy). Christe eleison (Christ have Mercy) Christe eleison (Christ have Mercy). Kyrie eleison (Lord have Mercy) Kyrie eleison (Lord have Mercy). May Almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to ever-lasting life. Amen.

A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah Isaiah 25:6-10a On this mountain the LORD of hosts will provide for all peoples a feast of rich food and choice wines, juicy, rich food and pure, choice wines. On this mountain he will destroy the veil that veils all peoples, the web that is woven over all nations; he will destroy death forever. The Lord GOD will wipe away the tears from every face; the reproach of his people he will remove from the whole earth; for the LORD has spo-ken. On that day it will be said: "Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us! This is the LORD for whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!" For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

A reading from the Letter of Saint Paul to the Philippians Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20

Brothers and sisters: I know how to live in humble circumstances; I know also how to live with abundance. In every circumstance and in all things I have learned the secret of being well fed and of going hungry, of living in abundance and of being in need. I can do all things in him who strengthens me. Still, it was kind of you to share in my distress. My God will fully supply whatever you need, in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus. To our God and Father, glory forever and ever. Amen. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Shepherd Me, O God

Liturgy of the Word This is the first of the two major parts of the Mass, Divine Liturgy or Eucharistic Liturgy. It is dur-ing this part of the celebration that the proclamation of the Word of God takes place. The readings for the Sunday Mass are structured in a three year cycle. Thus the vast majority of the entire Bible is proclaimed to the Sunday assembly every three years.

First Reading The first reading normally comes from the Old Testament and is thematically paired to the Gospel proclaimed on the same day. Responsorial Psalm Having heard of God’s deeds in the proclamation of the first reading, the assembly responds normally by singing one of the psalms. Second Reading The second reading comes from one of the epistles. These readings are read in a semi-continuous way. This means that a few versus of a given epistle is proclaimed and then stopped. The next Sunday the proclamation continues where the previous Sunday left off. Gospel Acclamation Through this acclamation, the assembly welcomes and greets the Lord who speaks to the as-sembly in the Gospel.

Gospel The Gospel is announced. All take their thumb and trace the cross signing the forehead, mouth and heart, praying as they do so: “May the Word of the Lord be in my mind, on my lips and in my heart.” This comes to us from a Jewish custom hon-oring the scriptures. A section of one of the Gospels is proclaimed and the assembly listens atten-tively to the voice of the Lord. Across the three year cycle of readings for Sunday Mass, Matthew, Mark or Luke’s Gospel is highlighted. John is read in all three years. Homily The Priest, or from time to time a Deacon, explains and expounds upon the mystery laid before the assembly this Sunday. Profession of Faith The assembly responds to the Word of God proclaimed with the ancient profession of faith to honor and confess the great mysteries of the faith. Normally the Nicene Creed is prayed which expresses the mysteries and rule of faith and comes from the Ecu-menical Council at Nicea in 325 AD and the First Ecumenical Council at Constantinople in 381 AD. The Universal Prayer (Prayers of the Faithful or Bidding Prayers) The faithful, exercising their bap-tismal priesthood, offer prayers to God for the salvation and benefit of all.

The Lord be with you And with your spirit. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew Glory to you, O Lord. Matthew 21:1-14 or 1-10 Jesus again in reply spoke to the chief priests and elders of the people in para-bles, saying, "The kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who gave a wed-ding feast for his son. He dispatched his servants to summon the invited guests to the feast, but they refused to come. A second time he sent other servants, saying, 'Tell those invited: "Behold, I have prepared my banquet, my calves and fattened cattle are killed, and everything is ready; come to the feast."' Some ig-nored the invitation and went away, one to his farm, another to his business. The rest laid hold of his servants, mistreated them, and killed them. The king was enraged and sent his troops, destroyed those murderers, and burned their city. Then he said to his servants, 'The feast is ready, but those who were invited were not worthy to come. Go out, therefore, into the main roads and invite to the feast whomever you find.' The servants went out into the streets and gathered all they found, bad and good alike, and the hall was filled with guests. [But when the king came in to meet the guests, he saw a man there not dressed in a wed-ding garment. The king said to him, 'My friend, how is it that you came in here without a wedding garment?' But he was reduced to silence. Then the king said to his attendants, 'Bind his hands and feet, and cast him into the darkness out-side, where there will be wailing and grinding of teeth.' Many are invited, but few are chosen." ] The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Be-gotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven and (Bow) by the Holy Spirit was in-carnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

….We pray to the Lord. Lord hear our prayer.

The Prayer Over the Offerings

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them up to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right and just.

The Liturgy of the Eucharist This is the second major part of the Mass. A collection is made for the support of the parish and its charitable works. This collection as well as the bread and wine to be offered are brought in procession to the altar. At the Last Supper Christ instituted the Paschal Sacri-fice and banquet, by which the Sacrifice of the Cross is continu-ously made present in the Church whenever the Priest, representing Christ the Lord, carries out what the Lord himself did and handed over to his disciples to be done in his memory. For Christ took the bread and the chalice, gave thanks, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples saying: Take, eat, this is my body and gave the chal-ice to his disciples saying: Take, drink, this is my blood. Do this in memory of me. Not a nostalgic remembrance but a dynamic living memorial in the power of God. Such, that, that which is remem-bered, becomes present to those who are celebrating the sacred mystery of salvation, who is Jesus Christ.

Eye Has Not Seen

Pray brethren (or other address of the assembly), that my sacrifice and yours may be acceptable to God, the almighty Father. May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Accept, O Lord, the prayers of your faithful with the sacrificial offerings, that, through these acts of devotedness, we may pass over to the glory of heaven. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

When We Eat This Bread

At the Savior’s command and formed by divine teaching, we dare to say: Our Father, Who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Deliver us, Lord, we pray, from every evil, graciously grant peace in our days, that, by the help of your mercy, we may be always free from sin and safe from all distress, as we await the blessed hope and the coming of our Savior, Jesus Christ. For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Lord Jesus Christ, who said to your Apostles: Peace I leave you, my peace I give you, look not on our sins, but on the faith of your Church, and graciously grant her peace and unity in accordance with your will. Who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen. The peace of the Lord be with you always. And with your spirit. Let us offer each other the sign of peace.

Holy, Holy, Holy

The Communion Rite The faithful prepare themselves to receive the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ in Holy Communion. They do this using vari-ous prayers and by praying for the coming of the Kingdom in the words Jesus taught and offering to one another a sign of be-ing at peace with one another, normally a handshake in the US.
