SAINT PAUL PARISH July 18/19, 2020 16th Sunday of Ordinary Time

Opening Hymn: “Blest are Those Who Love You” (Refrain) Blest are those who love you, happy those who follow you, blest are those who seek you, O God.

Happy all those who fear the Lord, and walk in God’s pathway; you will find what you long for:

the riches of our God. (to refrain) Your spouse shall be like a fruitful vine in the midst of your home, your children flourish like olive plants

rejoicing at your table. (to refrain)

Marty Haugen Text and music © 1987, 1993 GIA Gloria (Spoken): Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we

glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God, almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Begotten Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the

world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High,

Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen Responsorial Hymn Response: “Lord You are good and forgiving” Gospel Acclamation: “Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia” Homily Creed (Spoken): I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was in-

carnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Offertory (silent prayer) Communion (Instrumental) Closing hymn: “Lord, You Have Come” Lord, you have come to the seashore, neither searching for the rich nor the wise, desiring only that I should follow.

O Lord, With your eyes set upon me, gently smiling, you have spoken my name; all I longed for I have found by the water, at your side, I will seek other shores. Text and music © 1979, 1987, Cesareo Gabarain, Published by OCP Publications.

READINGS & REFLECTIONS

REFLECTION: GOOD SEEDS Today Jesus continues to speak to his followers using parables. What a rich treasure we are given today in three parables about the kingdom of heaven! The kingdom is likened to a man sowing good seed in his field, a mustard seed, and yeast mixed with flour. As they did last week, today the disciples press Jesus for an interpretation of one of the parables—the parable of the man sowing good seed. Lest we think that these parables are simply amusing little anecdotes, Jesus’ interpretation should be seen for what it is—a warning. Wailing and grinding of teeth in a fiery furnace await those who are children of the evil one. This parable points to the struggle for today’s believer. Sometimes, through sin, we sow weeds and prevent the love of Christ from blossoming. Let today’s Gospel help put us back on track. Let us recommit ourselves to preparing for the last days, the harvest, by blossoming as the good seeds we were created in love to be. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TODAY’S READINGS FIRST READING You taught your people that those who are just must likewise be kind (Wisdom 12:13, 16-19). PSALM: Lord, you are good and forgiving (Psalm 86).

SECOND READING : The Spirit comes to aid us in our weakness (Romans 8:26-27).

GOSPEL: Jesus proposes parables to the crowds, teaching them of the reign of God (Matthew 13:24-43 [24-30]). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass © 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on

GOLDEN WEDDING ANNIVERSARIES 2020 Bishop Malesic desires to recognize all couples celebrating their 50th Wedding Anniversary during the calendar year 2020. The Jubilarians, their children, relatives or friends should contact their local parish office to register couples for this recognition. Ideally, the Jubilarians will be invited to join the bishop for a special Golden Wedding Anniversary Mass to be celebrated in Blessed Sacrament Cathedral on Sunday, September 20, 2020. Even though circumstances may not permit participation in this Mass, all couples will receive a scroll signed by the Bishop commemorating their anniversary.

The people listed below were married in 1970. These names, including those who have been widowed will be sent to Bishop Malesi-c’s Office for recognition. Traditionally in September there is a Mass and Celebration but due to the virus and its spiking after some gatherings, that may not happen. As we get closer to September we will learn more information, and we will share that through bulletin announcements. If you were married in 1970 and your name does not appear on this list please call the parish office so we may add it and amend our records.

CHARITY COLLECTIONS SUMMARY

Thank you, as always, for your generosity in our monthly local charity

collections. Even in these difficult months, you have been very diligent in remembering the

needy. All of your donations have been distributed by the end of the fiscal year, and the following groups have benefited from your kindness: Food 2 Go 4 Kids Program, Diaconate Program in the Diocese of Greensburg, Saint Vincent

dePaul Society, Magnificat Greensburg, Boy Scout Troup #480, Knights of Columbus Council #1480, Carbon Volunteer Fire Department, Carmel of the Assumption, Saint Emma’s Monastery, Aquinas Academy, and Greensburg

Central Catholic High School. There are countless people helped in our community…..unknown names of families who, for example, are clients at the Food Pantry, along with children who struggle to get enough food; people who are helped through our SVdP helpline; and so many people through the above-named wonderful organizations. Through their ministry -- spiritual, physical

and emotional needs are met, along with those financial in nature….and those good works can never be measured. So, thank you, one and all, for your ef-

forts and good spirit.

CLEARANCES Remember to continue to work on your clearances. You might think this is practice in futility because no one ever looks at them, but you’d be wrong. They are looked at and in fact are part of an audit done on the diocese periodically to prove we are doing what we say we’re doing… protecting vulnerable people. So, let’s get ‘em done. Call the Par-ish Office if you need help with them. Thank you!
