Welcome A Message from Msgr. Joe On this Gaudete (“Rejoice”) Sunday, we pause to acknowledge that our Advent season of prepara on is not one of gloom and dread, but rather of joyful expecta on. Even as we pa ently await the coming of the day of the Lord, signs abound that it is here already. As we celebrate together today, let us be alert for the traces of God’s reign already here. The overwhelming success of this year’s Jesse Tree project is a cause for rejoicing. Much more than purchasing a gi for Christmas morning, your generous response to assist those less fortunate is a visible sign of the good things being done in our me and day that Jesus himself pointed out to the disciples of John the Bap st who came to him to ask if he were the Messiah. Jesus pointed them to the signs of the Kingdom. Your generosity is a sign of that same Kingdom that comes to us in the birth of the Christ Child. And the rejoicing con nued in the celebra on of our St. Paul School’s Christmas Pageant and shows as well as our Parish Christmas Tree ligh ng. What an inspiring performance as only our children can do to remind us what this me of Advent and Christmas is truly all about. Thank you to our parents for allowing our St. Paul Parish to be a part of your child’s faith forma on. Finally, our Advent Reconcilia on Service with individual confession is Wednesday, December 20 at 7:00 pm. What a wonderful way to prepare for the Na vity as we
experience God’s merciful love. We are grateful for the visi ng priests who will be joining with us that evening. Reconcilia on will be available in Spanish. The Sacrament of Reconcilia on is at the heart of Jesus’ work to save and heal. It is the tangible expression of a loving Father’s desire to find his children again. The ordained ministers of the Church carry on this work of forgiveness and reconcilia on. The priests of our community together with the visi ng priests who will join us this night desire to share this loving Father of Jesus Christ with

Lectio Divina: Praying with Scripture Lec o Divina is the prac ce of praying with scripture; it combines reading the text in its
context, listening to phrases that speak out to us, medita ng on the text, and engaging with God in prayer over it. Through the richness of God’s Word, we are calmed, refreshed, and strengthened. Join us for an hour of praying with scripture every Tuesday, 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. in the Conference Room in the Parish Center. No prior prac ce or prepara on necessary. Eucharistic Adoration Each Friday following the 8:15 am Mass until 5:00 pm in the church chapel. Monthly 24 Hour Extended Adoration on the first Thursday into first Friday from 9:00 am to 8:00 am in the Parish Center, Mercy Chapel Please consider spending some time before the Eucharistic presence of the Lord by signing up for a period of time. Altar & Rosary Society The ladies of our Altar & Rosary commit to praying the Rosary to Our Lady for our parish community and inten ons. They gather monthly for prayer and mee ng. Together with several parish func ons, they assist in the care and cleaning of our parish church. For more informa on contact Marianne Tamasi 921‐7485.
Bereavement Ministry The Bereavement Ministry seeks to assist families at the me of the passing of a loved one with the details of planning a funeral liturgy. In addi on this ministry organizes support groups twice a year for anyone grieving the loss of a loved one. Please contact John Twamley at 609‐924‐1743 for more informa on.
Child Care/Nursery Ministry During the 10 am Sunday Morning Mass child care is provided by professionally trained staff for children six months of age to four years old. The nursery is located in the pre‐school classroom in the St Paul School. Please contact the Nursery Coordinator, Kelly Messick at [email protected].
Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) Are you interested in learning more about the Catholic faith and how to become a member of our community? Do you need to complete your Sacraments of Ini a on? Then RCIA is a process for you. Contact Deacon Frank 516‐316‐2500.
Food for the Hungry When you are shopping, please remember those less fortunate. Only one can or box will make a difference and is important (no glass containers please). Items can be le in the containers at the Church entrances. Some items needed include: Boxed cereals, canned or dried soups, coffee, tea, canned meat and fish, canned vegetables, salt, macaroni and cheese dinners, cake mixes, flour, household and paper products, canned fruits, spaghe and pasta, sugar and rice.
Knights of Columbus The Knights are looking for some men ages 18+ to join us in serving our parish and the community. We do many different things, so there is something for everyone. We provide help to the needy, support various family ac vi es such as movie nights, and soup and salad for the parish on Fridays during lent. We also support various “Respect Life” events. The Light Ministry The Light Ministry offers help to anyone whose life, family or friends have been affected by alcoholism, drug abuse and other addic ons. We are available to listen, confiden ally, in a nonjudgmental way, to provide a safe support network and to offer referrals to assistance groups and agencies. Faith Formation A Message from John Michael McGuire Back thousands of years ago, the people of Israel awaited a messiah, a man of great strength and power who could defeat the great oppressors of their day. How shocking must it have been that the Prince of Peace would come as a child! Even more unexpected, that child would be born into such poverty that he would be swaddled in a feeding trough! The reality is, that if Jesus came as they had thought he would, it would be a flee ng victory, more empires would rise and fall, and subjugate the people, but the Messiah came to destroy sin and death, the only enemy that can harm us infinitely. This week let’s remember the children of this world born into similar poverty and challenges as the Christ child and seek to bring the peace and joy of Christ into the world as is the universal call of the bap zed faithful.

Vacation Bible Camp Save the date. St. Paul Parish will host our annual VBC from Monday, July 9 to Friday, July 13 from 9:00 am un l 12:00 noon. Summer Academy Dates Summer Academy for the 2017‐2018 Parish Religious Educa on Program year will be Monday, July 24 through Friday, August 3. This program covers a year’s catechesis requirements over 30 hours in a two week period, and also provides many liturgical and spiritual opportuni es unique to this program. Families par cipa ng in this program are also required to par cipate in three Family Catechesis Sessions and a Family Life Day.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word Children’s Liturgy of the Word is a special opportunity for children at 10:00 am Mass to share the Word of God in an age appropriate reflec on. A Message from Dr. Ryan Killeen When we unpacked what always seems like a limitless supply of boxed Christmas gear at home this year, it’s been a trip down memory lane as I am sure it is for all of you. A favorite box for me is always the collec on of Christmas books we have gathered over the years. It’s always fun to reconnect with old friends like a Christmas Carol, The Gi of the Magi, or a Visit from St. Nick. Reading together as a family doesn’t just build
family unity and shared memories, it also develops strong literacy skills. Reading aloud with children is one of the best ways to build stronger vocabulary, strengthen literacy skills, and build a love of reading. Even when students have become independent readers their skills can be increased and vocabulary expanded when exposed to more challenging material read to them. Typically a student’s comprehension ability will be 1‐2 years ahead of their reading ability. Don’t let those older kids fool you, they s ll need read aloud. It encourages their advancement, you can model posi ve reading strategies, and they love the me with you. I strongly encourage you to build a family habit of reading aloud. Even a few minutes or pages before bed has an impact. Does it have to be every night? Of course not. We are realists but figure out the rou ne that works for you. Besides the academic benefit, it builds in se ling me to improve be er sleep which is honestly probably the best thing you can do for a produc ve school day. This year we have decided that read aloud is so important in school that we have formalized our instruc onal read aloud program. All of our classrooms grades P4 through 5 have integrated a formal read aloud prac ce as part of daily instruc on. For at least 15 minutes a day our teachers will read aloud with classes a series of chapter books/novels. Selec ons will be more challenging narra ves than students can read independently to engage curious minds, expand vocabulary and model best reading prac ces. It builds a community of readers who can par cipate in a shared literary conversa on on plot and character analysis. Look out for more details about our read aloud ini a ve in the new year. Teachers will be communica ng each classrooms selec on and we will welcome guest readers to support the program. I will visi ng all of the classrooms to lead read aloud throughout the winter. The St. Paul School Scholas c Olympic team brought home a First Place Award from the 36th Annual Scholas c Olympics, sponsored by the Na onal Honor Society of Trenton Catholic Academy on November 9th. St. Paul School of Princeton won 1st Place for the 4th consecu ve year. The academic compe on, open to eighth grade Catholic elementary school students in the Diocese
of Trenton, is a test of general knowledge in the areas of Art, English, History, Mathema cs, Religion, Science and Spelling. Medals are given for First, Second and Third Place in each subject. St. Paul Parish is partnering with “Hogar Sagrado Corazón” (Sacred Heart Home), in Montero, Bolivia. The Hogar is an orphanage run by the Catholic religious congrega on Sister Servants of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, which one of our own joined, Sr. Anna Mar na S.S.C.J. (Anna Lawrence Kupin). The
Bolivian government does not support higher educa on for the young women from the Hogar. Yet, thanks to private donors from Europe and the US, more than 20 of them were able to a end college or a Votech program, and so increase their ability to find a produc ve life´s work and grow in maturity and responsibility before becoming completely independent, the gi of educa on in a nurturing environment. Un hombre enviado por Dios, que 2. vino como tes go para dar tes monio, 3. para que todos creyeran por medio de el. Mas adelante el evangelio dirá que Jesús es 1. El enviado del Padre que, 2. dio tes monio, 3. para que los judíos creyeran. En la Ul ma Cena, Jesús revelara a los discípulos que ellos a su vez van a ser 1. los enviados por Jesús, que 2. darán tes monio de el, y 3. Jesús oro por los que iban a creer a través del tes monio de los discípulos. Lo que San Juan Bau sta, Jesús, y los discípulos fueron, estamos llamados a ser nosotros: tenemos una misión porque somos los enviados por Jesús; debemos dar tes monio de el con nuestras obras y palabras; debemos ganar a los demás para Jesús, para que crean en el mas y mejor. En este tercer domingo de Adviento, se enciende la vela de color rosa de la Corona del Adviento. Este es un domingo de alegría, porque el Señor esta muy cerca. En la segunda lectura se nos recuerda que la alegría es una de las cualidades fundamentales del cris ano. La alegría del cris ano proviene del recibir (de Dios), y del darse (a los demás). Hay que vivir siempre contentos pero nunca sa sfechos porque el Señor sigue cuidando de nosotros. La vida cris ana es un vivir en la esperanza, no tensa, sino gozosa, porque sabemos que al final de todo esta Dios.

Nosotros, la comunidad Católica de San Pablo, en Princeton, honramos nuestra tradición de ofrecer la bienvenida a todos los fieles, hijos e hijas de Dios de diferentes culturas y orígenes para que conozcan y vivan el Evangelio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Bautizados y formados en Dios como su pueblo, seguimos creciendo en la Tradición Apostólica de Celebración Litúrgica, Sagrada Escritura y Servicio. Celebración Litúrgica, a través de nuestra participación en la Eucaristía y la celebración de los sacramentos; Sagrada Escritura, para promover y apoyar nuestra identidad católica a través de la palabra sagrada y la catequesis; y en Servicio, como discípulos que comparten el amor de Dios con todos y colaboran para crear un mundo donde existe paz y justicia en anticipación a la venida del Reino de Dios.

Annual Nativity Pageant On Christmas Eve, Sunday, December 24 at 3:30 PM, we will have our annual Na vity Pageant with the St. Paul Parish Children’s Choir as we gather for Christmas Mass. Any parish child is welcomed to par cipate. Children in Grade 2 and younger are encouraged to come dressed as shepherds or angels,; children in Grade 3 through 7 will be welcomed as narrators, or to play an inn keeper, the star and other important roles. We are looking for a boy in Grade 7 or 8 for the role of Joseph. If your child is interested in being involved please contact John McGuire in the Office of Religious Educa on at: [email protected]. The rehearsal will be held on Tuesday, December 19 in Church from 6:00‐7:30 pm.
Help Distribute Candy Canes on Christmas On Christmas, we will again welcome many visitors to our parish church at Mass. We want to make them and all feel especially welcome. So, we will distribute Candy Canes with Christmas wishes and a li le surprise gi to all who come to Mass at St. Paul’s on Christmas. We are looking for individuals and families to help hand out the candy canes at any of the masses on December 24 or 25. Come early or stay on a bit, and hand out candy canes and Christmas wishes. Simbang Gabi Our Filipino community invites everybody to the Annual “Simbang Gabi” Mass at St. Paul on Friday, December 22 at 7:00pm. “Simbang Gabi” or Misa De Gallo is a 9‐day celebra on before Christmas. It was called “midnight Mass” or “Mass of the rooster” and comes from the Catholic custom of gathering for the celebra on of the Eucharist in the pre‐dawn hours of each of the 9 days prior to
Christmas. Individuals of various parishes in the Mercer County area desired to bring the Christmas tradi on of “Simbang Gabi” to their churches. Nine different churches throughout Mercer County now offer a mass star ng on December 15 and ending December 23. All the par cipants who a ended these masses have a joyous me in celebra ng the mass and the Filipino foods and
