  • PASTOR’S CORNER Sunday, January 22, 2017 Dear Friends at Saint Paul:

You believe in Love? Yes, you do! This February, as all the world seems to focus on the roman c schmaltz of Valen ne Day, which has come to mean something very different than Saint Valen us, martyr for Christ, would have recognized, we have World Marriage Day February 12th, a Sunday. Chocolate, roses and hearts will only go so far!

Would you like to “protest” – well, I mean, demonstrate – for Marriage? Come to the 11:00 am Sunday Mass on February 12th for a “love-in” of the real kind: commi ed Catholic couples seeking God's help to live out their marriage vows with care and responsibility.

We will par cularly celebrate five year anniversaries: star ng at year 5! Were you married in 2012, 2007, 2002, 1997, 1992, 1987, 1982, 1977, 1972, 1967? If you were married in 1967 or earlier, we celebrate every year: 1966, 1965, etc, etc!

But this year in par cular, we want a special focus: to share the joy of silver and golden and even diamond anniversaries, with prayer for our younger couples, for those married 5, 10, 15, and 20 years ago. Please see the announcement elsewhere in the bulle n and plan on a joyful intercession for you and yours on the morning of World Marriage Day.

This Wednesday, January 25th, 2017 is our Parish Feast Day: The Conversion of Saint Paul. The observance centers on morning Mass at 9 am with our Catholic School children, followed by prayer and adora on in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament from 10 to Noon (please sign up for a half hour prayer me: 10:00, 10:30, 11:00, and 11:30 am). At 12 noon, we will begin a Holy Hour, in honor of Saint Paul, concluding with Benedic on.

The Opening Prayer (or Collect) of the Mass on Wednesday goes as follows: “O God, who taught the whole world through the preaching of the blessed Apostle Paul, draw us, we pray, nearer to you through the example of him whose conversion we celebrate today, and so make us witnesses to your truth in the world.” I am s ll looking for any recollec ons, memories or customs associated with Saint Paul and his feast day that we might incorporate in future years for this Parish Feast Day. Let me know!

Tomorrow, Monday, January 23rd, is the day designated by our American Bishops as a “Day of Prayer for the Legal Protec on of the Unborn” as the Roe v Wade decision day, January 22nd, is a Sunday this year. Please keep praying for this righ ul and necessary change of heart in our Na on to protect the Innocent, especially the most innocent and dependent on us: the children yet to be born!

As they have no voice yet (and maybe never will have a voice unless we act), it is our duty to speak on their behalf. The Right to Life is theirs by God's design and only by ac ng against that design, are we “able” to keep it from them. Abor on is ac ng against God. Those who have suffered through an abor on are o en its strongest opponents, and our role of forgiveness, mercy and encouragement to those who have made this choice in the past can be the founda on for a great and true cultural conversion. That's what we're praying for: a day of prayer for the legal protec on of the Unborn based on a conversion for Life.

Finally, if you can help us with a Ministry Fair project to get more volunteers for the Mass, for parish ac vi es, for service projects, PLEASE let us know. There is an email you can use: [email protected]. We would love to have your help!

    Peace,

  • CONVERSION OF SAINT

    PAUL

This miraculous event is celebrated on January 25th . Conversion is the heart of the Chris an

experience. Conversion is best described in the New Testament in the Le ers of Saint Paul, and with good reason - no one experienced a more drama c conversion than Paul on the road to Damascus!

Saul, which is Paul’s given name, was born into a Jewish family in Tarsus (Turkey) around the year 5 A.D. He was a tent maker by trade, but was most noted for his hatred of Chris ans. The first scriptural men on of Saul is found in Acts 7:58, as he is a bystander watching his fellow Jews stone St. Stephen to death. An aggressive persecutor of Chris ans in Jerusalem, Saul sought and received permission to proceed to Damascus for the purpose of imprisoning more followers of Christ.

Most Chris ans know the story: the bright light that knocked Saul down, the voice of Jesus, Saul’s blindness and led into Damascus, where he was bap zed. Paul would repeat the story of his conversion again and again throughout his life, including to the different magistrates and kings who judged his ac vi es. The book of Acts, in three places, tells the story of Saul’s experience on the Damascus road. Suddenly he was transformed from despising the followers of Jesus into fervently espousing the Gospel of that same Jesus.

A er his bap sm, Saul, went to the desert of Arabia to pray and contemplate his calling. He then returned to Damascus and into the synagogue, where he a ested to the divinity of Jesus. The Jews in Damascus would eventually connive against him as he was o en regarded as undesirable and an agitator. At the Council of Jerusalem, in the year 49, Paul successfully argued against the necessity that non-Jews convert first to Judaism, with Mosaic Law, circumcision and Jewish dietary customs. Because of Paul’s persuasion, Chris anity would become even more universal.

With faith and courage inflamed by the Holy Spirit, Paul would spend the rest of his life going from country to country and town to town proclaiming Jesus as the Messiah, organizing and encouraging Chris ans to be resolute followers of Jesus, and nonbelievers to open their hearts to Christ, repent and be bap zed. He would become known as the Apostle of the Gen les (non-Jews) and his travels, le ers and teaching changed the world. Despite all the dangers he encountered, Paul never faltered or failed his God. In the end, he would be taken to Rome as a prisoner and was beheaded for his faith. Further, he is an example that anyone, even the most hardened unbeliever or the vilest here c, can be created anew by our loving Savior.
