WORD OF THE LORD
THIS WEEKS ACTIVITIES
DIVINE MERCY Join us as we pray for ourselves, all
parishioners, and the world. Every Sunday at 10:30AM in SJC.
The complete Parish Calendar, as well as past issues of the bulle n, are always
available for viewing at our website: spccnb.org
TODAYS READINGS
First Reading Amos said, The L took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people (Amos 7:12-15). Psalm Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salva on (Psalm 85). Second Reading The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3-14 [3-10]). Gospel Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two (Mark 6:7-13).
CALLED BY GOD
Todays scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the L to the prophet Amos, the shepherd and a dresser of sycamores (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out two by two (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were bap zed. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God des ned us for adop on (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through Gods living word. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Catholic Essen als will be a good review for any and all who want to re-find the star ng point for a regular Catholic experience. It will be a good introduc on to
Catholicity, if you've never heard it before. You should come!
SAINT APOLLINARIS
Apollinaris was one of the first famous martyrs of the church. He was made Bishop of Ravenna. The miracles he
conducted in Ravenna soon a racted official a en on, for they and his
preaching won many converts to the faith. However, at the same me, his
words and works brought the fury of the pagan people who beat Apollinaris cruelly on several occasions.
During one bea ng, Apollinaris was cut with knives, had scalding hot water poured over his wounds, was beaten
in the mouth with stones, then finally put on board a ship and sent to Greece. In Greece the same course of preaching, and miracles, and sufferings con nued. In
fact, a er a cruel bea ng by Greek pagans, he was sent back to Italy.
Nothing rendered his name so illustrious, however, as the noble apology he addressed to the Emperor Marcus Aurelius about the year 175. This was spoken soon a er
the miraculous victory the emperor obtained over enemies, through the prayers of the Chris ans. Saint
Apollinaris reminded Marcus Aurelius of the benefit he had received from God through the prayers of his
Chris an subjects, and implored protec on for them against the persecu ons of the pagans.
When Aurelius died, Emperor Vespasian issued a decree of banishment against the Chris ans. Apollinaris was kept hidden for some me, but as he was leaving, passing through the gates of the city, he was a acked
and savagely beaten. He lived for seven days, foretelling that the persecu ons would increase, but
that the Church would ul mately triumph.
Precise dates for St. Apollinaris is not known. He is the patron saint of epilepsy, gout, Dsseldorf, and Ravenna.

The Catholic School Difference
Students in Catholic schools are more self-disciplined than students in public and private schools, a new report finds. A study commissioned by the Thomas B. Fordham Ins tute at
UCSanta Barbara and recently reported in the Wall Street Journal compared children who a ended Catholic schools with similar students enrolled in both public and other private schools.
The study found that students in Catholic schools are less likely to act out or be disrup ve and show more self-control than those in other private or public schools. Importantly, religion was found to posi vely influence a childs behavior. The results suggest a ending Catholic school may help foster self-control in students from all kinds of demographic and religious backgrounds. The self-discipline students develop in Catholic schools will help them in their studies now and later in life as they enter their professions, become leaders in their communi es and model their faith for their own children.
When considering the educa onal alterna ves available in our area, parents are finding that the Catholic School Difference makes Saint Paul Catholic School the obvious choice. If you are s ll considering Saint Paul Catholic School for your family and would like informa on or to arrange a tour, visit our website at www.stpaulcs.org or call the school at 252.633.0100 between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday.
We are currently enrolling students in all grades in order of registra on, with very limited space s ll available in our 3K though Kindergarten classes.
Success begins @ Saint Paul.
Do you enjoy spending your free me out on the water boa ng, fishing, or swimming? Have you ever no ced weird smells, colors, or fish kills along
the Neuse or Trent Rivers? This summer, Sound Rivers is offering a Swim Guide to provide water quality advisories for popular recrea onal sites. The Neuse and Pamlico -Tar River Keepers are working with interns and volunteers to monitor water quality at sites in the Neuse and Tar-Pamlico watersheds. These rivers face large amounts of fecal bacteria pollu on from agriculture, storm water runoff, and other sources, which can cause bacteria levels to rise higher than is safe for human exposure. The sites are sampled weekly and will con nue to be sampled through Labor Day weekend to monitor for fecal coliform and E. Coli bacteria.
If you plan on heading out on the water, make sure to check out the Swim Guide for water quality updates at popular local spots!

This past week, Bishop Zarama brought to its natural closure the diocesan Cause for the Bea fica on and Canoniza on of the Servant of God Father Thomas F Price. This means that the documents, research and histories have been completed rela ng to the sanc ty of this good and holy priest. The whole Diocese rejoices in advancing the Cause but especially the parish of Saint Paul in New Bern, because Father Price was Pastor here from 1887 to 1896. Pleased join all your brothers and sisters of the Diocese in the following prayer, seeking the intercession of Father Price: Heavenly Father, You so inspired Father Thomas Frederick Price with love for You and
zeal for the Gospel that he dedicated his life to serve You and Your Church, first in North Carolina, his home state, and then in the foreign missions. Grant that by his example we may grow in holiness and into a deeper union with Our Lord Jesus Christ. Help us to be authen c witnesses of the Gospel and proclaim the Holy Name of Jesus throughout the Diocese of Raleigh to all the people and in all the places we are sent to love and serve. If it be according to Your Will, glorify Your servant, Father Thomas Frederick Price, by gran ng the favor I (we) now request through his prayerful intercession (men on request here). I (we) make this prayer confidently through Jesus Christ, Our Lord. Amen. Our Lady, Help of Chris ans, Pray for us!
