RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION PROGRAM

Do you attend mass but are NOT Catholic?

Are you married to a non-Catholic who has voiced an interest in our faith?

Were you baptized Catholic but never received any other sacraments?

If you have answered yes to any of these questions please call us to enroll in our next RCIA program that will begin in the fall. We meet every Sunday morning from 9:15 to 10:30 in the FLC.

Our goal is to help you become educated in the faith and to prepare you to receive the sacraments.

Sessions are informal and interactive, our goal is to educate and answer the questions presented by those in attendance.

Please call the church office at 252-638-1984 to register or Marcelene McLure at 252-497-0619 for detailed information.

HOPE AND LIFE

Today's readings tell the story of two widows. The first reading relates the plight of the widow with whom the prophet Elijah stayed; the Gospel tells about the widow of Nain. In each story, the widow's only son had died. For people who lived in those cultures, the son was the only support of a widow, and the carrying on of the family name by the son was equal to immortality. A widow whose only son has died could lose all

hope.

Elijah and Jesus are the restorers of hope; they bring the sons back to life. Saint Paul was metaphorically raised from the dead when he experienced the conversion and call from God

that he describes in today's second reading.

What are Christians called to do today? We may not be able to raise the dead, but perhaps we can rekindle hope for a single parent. We may not be able to convert a persecutor like Paul, but if we speak the gospel openly and gently with our lives, we

might touch a life with the Good News.

TODAY'S READINGS

First Reading -- Elijah revives the son of a widow

(1 Kings 17:17-24). Psalm -- I will praise you, Lord, for you have rescued me

(Psalm 30). Second Reading -- Paul explains God's call to him to preach to the Gentiles (Galatians 1:11-19). Gospel -- Jesus raises from the dead the son of a widow in the city of Nain (Luke 7:11-17).

Broken Hearts! Glad Tidings!

Bishop Burbidge has announced the assignment of Father William Upah to the pastorate of our neighboring parish, Annunciation Catholic Church, Havelock.

Bishop has assigned Deacon Michael Schuetz as our new Parochial Vicar, after his Ordination as priest.

These changes are effective June 23rd. Congratulations to them both!

Please join us for a farewell to our beloved Fr Bill on Saturday evening, June 18th, after the 5 pm Mass (Father’s Day weekend), about 6:15pm. We’ll miss him and we want him to know it!

Please join in prayer with the entire Diocese as part of the preparation for the Ordination of Deacon Schuetz (and his classmate Deacon Kane) on June 4th.

(Note from Fr Tully: For your information, but not telling you what to do, it is very appropriate to give cash or checks to priests as a thank you and sign of support…. in case you were wondering).

Now is the time to send in your application for a Choose Life License plate. In order for the plates to be produced, there must be 300 applications. Even if you applied before the lawsuit, you need to apply again.

Visit www.ncchoose-life.org/ and click on the application link on the left panel. The plates are $25 and $15 will go to Carolina Pregnancy Care Fellowship to be distributed among the 65 Pregnancy Care Centers throughout North Carolina who are members of the Fellowship.

Help the state of North Carolina help these Centers do their life-saving work.

“AMORIS LAETITIA”: THE JOY OF LOVE

It’s here! Pope Francis released a widely anticipated apostolic exhortation entitled “Amoris Laetitia,” or, The Joy of Love. His Holiness’s prayerful reflections on marriage and the family will give married couples

and families much solid guidance in their vocation of love.

Striking for its breadth and detail—and firmly grounded in the challenges of family experiences—the Joy of Love affirms the rich and complex reality of family life with pastoral care, speaking the language of

experience and hope.

Pope Francis reaches out to married couples, parents, and children in a spirit of accompaniment, asking everyone to read slowly, paying special attention to what applies most to our different needs. The Joy of Love is truly remarkable for its practical and

concrete suggestions. It also challenges us to be understanding in the face of complex and painful situations.

Copies of “Amoris Laetitia” are available for purchase from USCCB Publishing, http://store.usccb.org/

FAQs about “Amoris Laetitia” and select bishops’ statements are available on the USCCB website. http://usccb.org

IS GOD CALLING YOU TO BE A CATECHIST?

In 1993, the Vatican Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples speaks of the sacred vocation of the catechist and the importance of the catechist and their role. A

catechist is one who is open to the Word, to God, to the church and has a “missionary openness” to the world.

We are looking for people of faith willing to grow more deeply in your faith, in your relationship with God and willing to serve our parish community by passing on our

most precious catholic faith to our children. Please ask the Lord for His guidance.

Please call Joy Harsen 252-229-2394 to find out about the vocation of a catechist.

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the most Blessed Sacrament. I love You above all things and

I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least

spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You have already come, and unite myself wholly to You.

Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Lord, I am not worthy that You should enter under my roof,

but only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

If you have a big heart for kids and love to teach Saint Paul might be the place for you. At Saint Paul, you don't just teach the data you get to teach the rest. The fruit of our school is its graduates and we are looking for two great teachers to join our team where our students are formed spiritually, intellectually, socially and physically.

We have small classes, a great curriculum, few extra duties and prayer and worship is part of your week at Saint Paul. Our benefits are great, our pay per student is higher than most every public school, and our teachers get to be creative.

If this sounds like a school you want to be a part of please send me your resume and set aside some time for an interview over the next couple of weeks. We are just about to finish a great year at Saint Paul and are looking forward to a bright future.

It is hard to believe we have been at this for 129 years in New Bern, NC. Saint Paul is one of over 30 Catholic Schools in Eastern North Carolina. We are small but we are part of a much larger school system that loves teaching children and introducing them to the person who matters most in their life, Jesus Christ.

Contact Deacon Dave Kierski at [email protected] or call the school - 633-0100.

KNIGHTS SUMMERCAMP

Saint Paul School is excited to begin the 2016 Knights Summer Camp! The Saint Paul Catholic School Summer Camp Program exists to support parents of Saint Catholic

Church and the wider New Bern Community. We strive to offer students a safe, and nurturing faith environment.

Campers dates are Monday through Friday. A fun filled day (7:30AM to 5:00PM) which will focus on the Academic and the Athletic. Additional

information, which includes a sample schedule of the day and price listing, can be found at stpaulcs.org/summer-camp-2016.html or, as always you are more than welcome to visit the school.

Spaces are limited.

June 6-10 – Soccer June 13-17 – Jump Rope June 20-24 – Basketball

June 27-July 1 - Volleyball

May God continue to bless you and challenge you. May you always be surrounded by people who

support and love you. May you grow more fully into the man/woman that God wants you to be, and that the world so

desperately needs. We ask this today, in hope and expectation that

God will continue the great things already begun in you.

Amen.

ALTAR SERVERS

Our parishioners may have noticed some additional altar servers at Mass recently.

We are training new servers, so there will be all ages of “rookie” servers at each Mass over the coming weeks. Please be patient while we get them all “up to speed.”

If your child is interested in serving for the upcoming school year, he/she needs to come on board this summer.

Please contact Katie Shorter at [email protected] if you are interested. Thank you!

CHAPLET OF DIVINE MERCY

It is mercy when we receive what we truly do not deserve. The mercy of God, love more than pity, is shown most in his willingness to save us – and it endures forever! (Ps. 136)

Matthew 5:7 in the Beatitudes says, “ Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.”

We will receive more abundantly when we lovingly practice the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy.

Let James 2:13 be a helpful reminder! “For the judgment (last) is merciless to one who has not shown mercy; mercy triumphs over judgment.” Let us thankfully render

back to God, as his due, a tithe of our praise, time, money and talents as we minister to others as unto him. Pray and seek his mercy today!

Come join us Sundays at 10:30 in the Chapel as we pray the Chaplet for ourselves, for you, and the world.

I would like to give a word of thanks and praise to the Eucharistic Ministers for the Sick and Homebound. I have been unable to attend Mass for over a year. You don’t really appreciate what these ministers do until you need them. They have provided me a way to receive the host and I have been very grateful for this. I know they are desperately in need of more of these ministers. If you have time to even do it once a month please call Denny Colbert 638-1555. Thanks to everyone for your continued prayers.
