THE INEXPRESSIBLE MYSTERY

The God of the universe is mysterious. Science has not been able to solve the mystery of how the universe came into being or explain exactly what con nues to give it crea ve energy and masterful design. No religion asserts that it has found words to name fully the ineffable mystery of God, for no ma er what name we use, God always transcends our limited ability to understand. God is a mystery to be believed, not known. And yet, we Chris ans believe that our name for God best expresses that inexpressible mystery: God is the Most Holy Trinity of three persons united in a communion of love, pouring forth that crea ve, saving, sanc fying love into the world. Today’s scriptures celebrate the mystery of the Trinity and give us clues for living that mystery in our lives.

The diocese has two new priests, Father James Magee, III, and Father Edisson Urrego. They were ordained Saturday, June 3, at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Wake Forest. Bishop J. Kevin Boland, a re red bishop who most recently served the Diocese of Savannah, conferred the sacrament of holy orders during the Mass. The rite of ordina on to the priesthood included the presenta on of the candidates, during which me Father Philip Tighe, director of voca ons, called the [then] deacons forth, presented them to the Church and asked the bishop to ordain them. The Mass also included the five promises of the elect, the promise of obedience and the Litany of Supplica on, a prayer that requests the intercession of the saints. In order to confer the gi of the Holy Spirit to each deacon, Bishop Boland laid hands on each candidate and said the Prayer of Ordina on. All of the priests in a endance

laid hands on each candidate as well in order to ritualize the fact that those ordained are brought into the presbyteral college of the local Church. Once ordained, the new priests were vested with a stole and chasuble. Father James Buchholz, V.F., assisted Father Magee, and Monsignor Michael Clay assisted Father Urrego. Bishop Boland anointed the hands of the new priests saying, “The Lord Jesus Christ, whom the Father anointed with the Holy Spirit, guard and preserve you that you may sanc fy the Chris an people and offer sacrifices to God.” A er Mass, Fathers Magee and Urrego offered blessings to those in a endance, including their mothers Maria Noemi Restrepo Hurtado and Blanche Magee, respec vely. Father Magee will serve as parochial vicar at St. Catherine of Siena Church; Father Urrego will serve as parochial vicar at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Cary.

Who Influenced/Inspired you to Priesthood? I had not been influenced by priests such as Fr. Bill John Acosta and Fr. Paul Parkerson, then my decision to go to the seminary would have been more difficult.

What would you say to a young man who thinks he may have a voca on? Pray and take your me making the right choice. Even though you feel God's calling, it takes me to fully understand what he wants. Praying and medita on will help you in your discerning.

Favorite Scripture Passage? Luke 22:42 This passage teaches us that we should always give ourselves to the Lord and find refuge in him. Not only this but, when one does so, he learns that the will of God is stronger than a man's.

Favorite Saint? John of Vianney

John de Guzman 3rd Year College Seminary: St. Charles Borromeo Ordina on Date: 2022 Birth Date: February 14 Home Parish: St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Raleigh, NC High School: St. Thomas More Academy Hobbies: Playing basketball, playing the piano, reading, ea ng and hanging out with my friends

Who Influenced/Inspired you to Priesthood? Monsignor John Williams has inspired me. I admire his joy, happiness, and peace during Mass, Confessions, Adora on and during the interac ons with his parishioners.

What would you say to a young man who thinks he may have a voca on? I would encourage the young man to pray, to talk to his voca ons director, his pastor and other members of the clergy, and to definitely pursue the calling. And most importantly, to place his heart wholly in the embrace of God and to trust that the Lord will lead him wherever the Lord wants the him to be.

Favorite Scripture Passage? 1 John 1:9 “If we acknowledge our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive our sins and cleanse us from every wrongdoing.”

A MESSAGE FROM POPE FRANCIS

“The feast of the Holy Trinity is an invita on for us to commit to enriching our everyday rela onships by promo ng communion, consola on, and mercy. Our being created in the image and likeness of God-communion calls us to understand ourselves as beings-in-rela on, and to live interpersonal rela onships in solidarity and reciprocal love.

In this mission, we are sustained by the strength which the Holy Spirit gives us: this cures the flesh of humanity wounded by injus ce, oppression, hate, and greed. The 'Divine Family' is not closed in on itself, but is open, communicates in crea on and in history, and has entered into the world of men to call everyone to take part. The feast of the Most Holy Trinity invites us to commit ourselves in the everyday events to be the leaven of communion, of consola on, and of mercy."

Pope Francis explained how these rela onships play out in ecclesial communi es, families, friends, work colleagues, and the like. These "are concrete occasions offered to us to build ever more humanly rich rela onships, capable of reciprocal respect and selfless love."

In the book of John, Christ outlines the rela onship between the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Knowing that he must fulfill the Father's plan through his own death and resurrec on, Jesus assures the disciples that he will not abandon them, because his mission will be con nued by the Holy Spirit.

He said that Jesus explains how the "Holy Spirit guides us in understanding the many things which Jesus himself s ll has to say". The Holy Spirit guides in new life situa ons, helping us to keep our gaze on Jesus, while being "open to events and to the future". "He helps us walk in history, firmly rooted in the Gospel, and with dynamic fidelity to our tradi ons and customs." "However, the mystery of the Trinity also speaks about us, our rela onship with the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit," Pope Francis said.

Through Bap sm, "the Holy Spirit has placed in the heart and life of God, who is the communion of love," the pon ff said. "God is a 'family' of three Persons who love each other so much they form a single thing."

Finally, Pope Francis turned to Mary, "the mirror of the Trinity, to reinforce our faith in the Trinitarian Mystery, and to embody it with choices and a tudes of love and unity".
