“From the Pastor”
Ordinary Time? By the time that you get this, the season of Easter will nearly be over and with it the long period of Lent-Easter that concentrated on the big life-altering narrative of the events that would bring us face to face with death and resurrection. Combined with Advent-Christmas, these seasons take up about one third of the church year. That leaves nearly three fifths of the Sundays in the calendar year. Years ago we referred to the “time after Epiphany” and the “time after Pentecost”, but they really had little to do with Epiphany or Pentecost. With that realization the Gospel readings for those three-fifths of the Sundays of the year accounted for the actions and teaching of Jesus that are so much core to Christian faith and life. They were renamed “Ordinary Time”. Beginning with June 23 we will read the texts from the Lectionary for the 12th Sunday in Ordinary Time. For the following weeks we will read the 13th and 14th and so forth Sundays in Ordinary Time. We will continue those readings with only a few exceptions for Sundays like All Saints and Reformation until we reach the 34th Sunday in Ordinary Time. That will be the Sunday of “Christ the King”… the Sunday before Advent. That is so convoluted that most of us pay little attention and rely on someone else to indicate what an individual Sunday should be. What is interesting is the name Ordinary Time. On the first of the Sundays in Ordinary Time that we come to, Jesus will reach out to a foreigner who to modern readers suffers from insanity. On the following Sundays Jesus will send out disciples to do their own version of confronting evil.
2
On another Sunday we will hear Jesus respond to a man volunteering for discipleship with a description of the difficulty of discipleship. We will follow Jesus to the home of friends where two sisters display very different ways of devotion to our Lord. We will follow Jesus again as he confronts the easy greed that we are so familiar with. And we will listen as Jesus is challenged about our responsibility for our neighbors, and Jesus will respond with a story that stars a foreigner who does for an injured victim what his near neighbors would avoid by walking away. How many of those “ordinary” events of the Jesus story do you recognize? … Gather with us in Ordinary Time to experience some extraordinary truths. Pr Carl Confirmation Confirmation Sunday this year will occur on June 9, Pentecost. Lutherans have been following a pretty aggressive version of preparation for Confirmation for a long time. Have you ever wondered what is being confirmed in Confirmation? Confirmation for Christians who practice it is related directly to Baptism which is an absolute pre-condition for Confirmation. Sometimes the relationship has been seen as the completion of Baptism (Roman Catholic doctrine states that pretty clearly). When I was confirmed (many, many years ago), the rite of Confirmation was effectively the precondition for first communion. Somewhere along the road we came to acknowledge that that kind of relationship had the effect of depreciating Baptism. The hymnal that we use makes clear the relationship… there is no Rite of Confirmation in the Evangelical Lutheran Worship book (ELW). On Confirmation Sunday you will see that the rite that we use is called the “Affirmation of Baptism”. At Confirmation we acknowledge what we (or our sponsors) promised at Baptism. Far more important, God affirms what God promised at our Baptism. So what is being confirmed at Confirmation? Nothing more or less than Baptism. Prayer You remain with us always, O God. You come near to us when we are lost, and you always hear our distress. Hear my prayers for those who suffer in any way. With bold confidence in your love, I place all for whom I pray into your eternal care. Amen

Last Day of Sunday School
The 2018-19 Sunday School year, which ended on May 19th, focused on learning about Moses and the Ten
Commandments. We performed a short skit to the congregation on the life of Moses and the 10 commandments
during the children’s time of service. Thanks to the adults who played the part of Pharaoh. Everyone involved did a
great job! We also awarded perfect attendance pins/wreaths. After fellowship we hung three of the birdhouses the
students painted on rally day on our park property. We hope to hang the others in Lions Club Park on June 16th,
weather permitting.
I want to thank all students who attended this year, even if only a couple of times. All our students are important to
us, regardless of attendance. Hope to see you all in the fall, when we start to learn the names of Jesus. Thank you
also to the staff, that make things happen. I couldn’t do this without you.
– Susan
Teacher Appreciation
Families are an important part of the life, mission, and ministry at St Paul’s
Church - especially the children! And Sunday School is an important part of
the ministry.
This fun, successful Sunday School year would not have been possible
without the leadership of Ms Susan Fleming. Her time, ideas and energy
throughout the year is much appreciated.
Of course, all successful education programs need dedicated teachers.
Thank you to all that volunteered their time and talents!
Though you may not hear words of thanks often – remember that these
children will grow up knowing the love of God as a result of your efforts.

RCIS is a private, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization formed in 1978 to provide counseling and support services to people in the
community hurt by sexual violence and to eliminate sexual violence in Carroll County through education and advocacy.
Counseling and other support services are provided to victims of sexual violence and their families free of charge. RCIS also
offers prevention education programs.
*Sexual assault affects everyone. It is likely that someone you care about has
been affected by sexual violence. Most sexual assaults are never reported to
authorities and often hidden from family and friends.
