Reflections From The Pilgrimage To Rome
It had been 11 years since I last set foot in the Eternal City of Rome. This time it was not a tour or a trip, but a “pilgrimage” which is defined as a journey to a sa-cred place that is important to one’s faith.
Our group of 35, both from the Church of St. Michael in Farmington and the Church of St. Peter, left the Twin Cities on Tuesday, October 1st and returned on Thursday, October 10th. We had a relatively enjoyable flight, despite some early turbulence when dinner and beverages were served, which made for an interest-ing experience in the airplane.
We visited several churches, each with its special history and meaning. Along with the 3 major basilicas (St. Peter, St. Mary Major, and St. John Lateran), for me personally, the best experience of a church was our time at Duomo di Orvieto (Cathedral in Orvieto, Italy). It was one of our primary destinations, and it is home for the Corporal of Bolsena, the relic of a miracle which is said to have oc-curred in 1263 in the nearby town of Bolsena, when a traveling priest who had doubts about the truth of transubstantiation found his Host was bleeding so much that it stained the altar cloth. That cloth is now stored in the Chapel of the Corporal inside the cathedral where we celebrated Mass.
One of our best experiences while in Rome, was a private tour of the Vatican Mu-seums and Sistine Chapel. We saw many treasures; the Raphael rooms, the Gal-lery of the Tapestries, the Gallery of the Geographical Maps, and the Sistine Chapel – a masterpiece of Renaissance art, and the place where the conclave meets to elect a new pope. The crowning jewel was the magnificent Last Judgment by Michelangelo. We had neither crowds to fight, nor ushers crying out “silenzio” – it truly was a grace filled moment to have the space to ourselves.
We also traveled to Florence, which is considered the art capital of Italy. The Ca-thedral, which is called the Duomo, with its famous baptistery is a site to behold with its green, white and rose-colored marble. Another great site in Florence is the statue of David by Michelangelo, which is in the Academy Art Museum. It leaves you standing in wonder and awe at such a masterpiece.
Everywhere the food, especially the pasta, was incredible. I made sure I ate pasta every day, sometimes twice a day! The coffee, wine, gelato/ice-cream were won-derful as well. It was wonderful to watch the Italians eat. They talked, laughed and waved their hands as if they were in heaven, because they were!
We were also able to attend the Papal Audience on Wednesday, October 9th. This is a truly unique experience for all Catholic pilgrims. It is amazing to see the many nationalities all gathered in one place to pray with our Holy Father, Pope Francis. It certainly brings to life the universality of the Catholic Church. I was brought to tears when in English I heard these words echo throughout St. Peters Square; “We warmly welcome the pilgrims from the Church of St. Michael, Farm-ington and the Church of St. Peter, Forest Lake, Minnesota.”
In gratitude I would like to thank all of you for your prayers while I was away on pilgrimage and assure you of my daily prayers for you and your family as we visited the holy sites in the Eternal City of Rome.
God bless,

Saint Peter Catholic School: ANNUAL APPEAL
This year St. Peter’s Catholic School will once again kick off our annual appeal by participating in Minnesota’s Give to the Max Day on November 14th. This is a one-day, on-line event. Information will be mailed to all parishioners so you should be receiving it soon.
We are fortunate to have a few donors willing to match your donations, up to the first $20,000! For every $1 dollar you pledge the school will receive $2 dollars. Therefore, if we receive $20,000, the school will receive a total of $40,000!
We are asking for your support of the Annual Appeal to help us continue our mission and to help those families who desire a Catholic education for their child but need some assistance. We encourage you to participate through Give to the Max Day if you can; otherwise we certainly appreciate your gift in any form.
How to Make Your Gift on Give to the Max Day, November 14, 2019
Visit: www.giveMN.org on November 14th or schedule your gift on-line starting November 1st. Search for: Church and School of St. Peter (The church and school share the same employer identification

Human Dignity in the “Vegetative State”
“No living human being ever descends to the status of a “vegetable” or an ani-mal. Even our brothers and sisters who find themselves in the clinical condition of a ‘vegetative state’ retain their human dignity in all its fullness,” St. John Paul II said. “The loving gaze of God the Father continues to fall upon them, acknowledging them as his sons and daughters, especially in need of help.” Against a “quality of life” ethic that makes discriminatory judgments about the worthiness of different people’s lives, the Church insists that the “value of a man’s life cannot be made subordinate to any judgment of its quality expressed by other men.”
