Dear Friends in Christ,

The purpose of my column today is two-fold. First of all, I hope to create some added awareness and, second, I hope to inspire you to pray.

Just a few short weeks after his election in March our Holy Father, Pope Francis, set an example for us – something he has done again and again. On Holy Thursday, celebrating the Mass of the Lord’s Supper, Pope Francis gathered with inmates of a Juvenile Detention Center in Rome. There, instead of performing the Mandatum rite (the washing of the feet) for twelve priests or laymen, the Holy Father washed the feet of ten young men and two young women. Among them were many nationalities and faiths, including at least two Muslims. The Holy Father did this as a way of showing that those who are least in the eyes of the world are the greatest in the Kingdom of Heaven and those who would be great must be the servant of all, including those who are least here and now.

Focusing on that segment of society – the imprisoned – I’d like to acquaint you with a growing problem in our communities. You may have heard about the Prison Ministry program at St. Peter’s and about the dynamic, inspiring community of faith being nurtured at Richland Correctional Institution (RiCI) under the guidance of Deacon Terry Philpott, Lynne Lukach and others, or the ministry of Deacon John Reef and Father Jeremy Miller at Mansfield Correctional Institution (ManCI). (I count myself very blessed to be among those who have the honor of serving the men at RiCI.) There is indeed a lively faith community at RiCI and there is also deep faith found among those being served at ManCI. Happily, as long as those inmates are incarcerated, they have a faith home and community to rely on.

But I wonder how many people know that there is virtually no mechanism of support or network of assistance to aid our released brothers and sisters in getting back on their feet once they are released from prison. Think of it. Especially for those who have no families or those whose families have abandoned them, there is no home, no food, no work, no clothing and no encouragement or moral support once they leave prison.

If one idea of our Corrections System is rehabilitation, it makes sense to me that our communities would want to put networks in place to assist those who, having made mistakes, have paid their penalty and who need a fresh start, if for no other reason than helping them to avoid making the same mistakes again. Very few employers will hire any former felon. Colleges and universities place restrictions on their enrollments and landlords are frequently unwilling to rent apartments to them. The playing field is definitely less than level for these men and women.

Some members of our community are beginning to see this and to discuss potential solutions. In this column, I only ask that you be aware that this problem exists and that you pray to our loving and forgiving God for help and guidance in answering this critical need. If one part of the body suffers, the whole body suffers, says St. Paul. Please pray for a solution to help ease the suffering of this part of the Body of Christ. If the Holy Spirit should guide you to want to do more, there are many of us who can point you in the right direction.

Week two of the “Quick Journey Into the Bible” has us at the beginning of the “story” guideline. The Genesis story with Adam and Eve focuses on God’s

loving gift to us of our free will. As we know, Adam and Eve did not use the gift wisely and they must then live with the conse-quences. We, too, today must live with the consequences of our decisions, but if we are open to God in our lives, we do not need to live these consequences alone. As in the Bible story, where God presents the world with one of the many chances for re-demption (Noah’s story), we too live that choice everyday! God’s plan unfolded through history gives us the Story for our lives. So let us pray: In the early World, You created the heav-ens and Earth and tested Adam and Eve in the garden: Help us to always choose the life that You offer. Amen.

Prayer to Our Virgin Mother of Guadalupe: Virgin of Guadalupe, Patron-ess of unborn children, we implore your

intercession for every child at risk of abortion. Help expectant parents to welcome from God the priceless gift of their child’s life. Console parents who have lost that gift through abortion, and lead them to forgiveness and heal-ing through the Divine Mercy of your Son. Teach us to cherish and to care for family and friends until God calls them home. Help us never to see others as burdens. Guide our public officials to defend each and every human life through just laws. Inspire us all to bring our faith into public life, to speak for those who have no voice. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, who is Love and Mercy itself. Amen

St. Peter’s Respect Life Chapter will have “THE BOOK OF INNOCENTS” on the altar rail in front of the Blessed Virgin’s altar for Pro-Life month, October. You are invited to record the name and lifespan of your child, lost to miscarriage, abortion, or stillbirth, with any thoughts and longings you may wish to write down. We continue to pray for you and these innocents.

As suggested in last weekend’s pamphlet, our efforts to bring Christ alive within us and to all we meet includes family life. “Parents,…through discussion of critical life issues within the family and by their example and guidance, teach and help to mold their children in faith and respect for all human life from conception to natural death.” (USCCB Pastoral Plan for Pro-Life Activities). “You should not act dishonestly in rendering judg-ment. Show neither partiality to the weak nor deference to the mighty, but judge your fellow men justly. You shall not go about spreading slander among your kinsmen; nor shall you stand by idly when your neighbor’s life is at stake. I am the LORD. You shall not bear hatred for your brother in your heart. Though you may have to reprove your fellow man, do not incur sin because of him. Take no revenge and cherish no grudge against your fellow countrymen. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.” Leviticus 19: 15-18

“Through the unique Montessori environment and loving teach-ers, my children learned self direction, independence, and coop-eration with peers.” Rebecca

“My children’s love and thirst for knowledge was developed through the hands-on experiences the Montessori program pro-vided. They thrived in this type of learning environment . . . and today participate in many enrichment and advanced learn-ing programs as a result of the Montessori program and its car-ing staff.” Cheryl

Twenty-eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

THE WORD OF GOD UNCHAINED There is no chaining the word of God! But how many times do we attempt to do that very thing? Had the followers of Jesus or the teachers of the law or the Pharisees been asked if the lepers should be cleansed or healed, the answer would most likely have been, “No, they deserve their condition.” The lepers would have been, perhaps, a mixed group, Galileans and Samaritans alike, the bond of their awful disease overcoming the pettiness of former religious bickering. Jesus’ ac-tions once again illustrate his vocation and ours: to reach out when healing is needed, to chal-lenge when conversion is needed, to console when comfort is needed. He also follows his own advice from last week’s Gospel: do what you have been commanded to do. When the cleansed Samaritan has returned to give thanks, Jesus does not take it as an opportunity for self-aggrandizement, but rather offers insight into faith. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Christian liturgy has always contained an opportunity to make a choice for sharing. From the beginning, Christians pooled their resources, especially for the care of widows and orphans, at the weekly Eucharist. Over the years, the collection became detached from the liturgy and baskets or plates would be passed through the community while the Mass was going on at the altar, or contribu-tions would be collected at the doors. In Milan’s Ambrosian Rite, these gifts were always brought to the altar by lay people in pro-cession. In German countries, the ancient custom was for the entire assembly to process with their gifts—first the men, then the women, then the priests and deacons—to offer their gifts at the altar. The old ceremony of canonization included a curious vestige of this procession: people would present the pope with two loaves of bread, two barrels of wine and water, five candles, and three cages containing pigeons or turtledoves! —James Field, Copyright © J. Family Perspective: Everyone needs a “round tuit.” The lepers in today’s Gospel probably meant to thank Jesus. Excited about being cured they didn’t get ‘around-to-it.’ We get caught up in our own interests and fail to appreciate what we have or to say what is in our hearts. This week get yourself a “round tuit.”
