Jesuits Come to Acadiana
In 1836 a contract was signed in France which would have a
lasting effect on the Catholic Church in southwest Louisiana.
The Archbishop of New Orleans contracted the Jesuits to
come to Louisiana to establish a school for boys in Grand
Coteau, where there was already a school or girls. The Jesu-
its arrived the following year and began building a school.
On July 31, 1837 Archbishop Blanc laid the cornerstone of St.
Charles College. In 1972, the campus of St. Charles College
became the Jesuit Spirituality Center. Today over 180 years
later, the Jesuits remain active in the Diocese of Lafayette.

You will recall how last week the disciples were sent by Jesus on a mission, two by two, in order that they might carry forth the message by proclaiming to the surrounding towns that their King and Messiah had appeared, and that they might show the impact of his appearing by healing the sick and delivering those in bondage. Well, now it was time for the disciples to return and report these ministry experiences to Jesus.
This missionary reporting was important in two ways, first, so that the disciples might share their experiences with the Master, and you can imagine their excitement at the retelling of these mission actions -- the miracles, the people, and the hardships, Second, Jesus would no doubt be interested in the progress of his mission purpose. We must never forget his primary care and passionate interest was that people everywhere would know that their King had ar-rived, and that Israel's GOD had now come close and was moving to reclaim his good, but fallen world.
But, in this process of reporting, Jesus apparently sees their fatigue, and knowing that they needed time away from ministry to decompress and to prepare for what would come next, he decides to take them away from the pressing crowds, that so overwhelmed them that they didn't even have time to eat!
Jesus leads them to cross the lake to a deserted place so that they might rest, but it appears no escape was possible because when the people had heard of their departure many followed like sheep follows the shepherd. We can probably imagine the look on the disciple’s face when their hide-away suddenly becomes the next venue of ministry. They probably thought, “can’t I have a little down time to rest, a little time to myself to recharge my batteries,” Haven’t we all thought or said those words at one time or another.
But we should hope that the disciples and us as well would have seen the same thing Jesus saw when he looked at the crowd:
"When he disembarked and saw the vast crowd, his heart was moved with pity for them, for they were like sheep without a shepherd; and he began to teach them many things."
Jesus sees the brokenness of the human condition first hand and once more he witnesses in the human spectacle before him the lostness within the very heart of humanness. Jesus sees them without leadership, proper, loving leadership as the wander in needy aimlessness.
This moves Jesus to compassion, something must be done, someone must lead. Someone must show the true way, the new way to be GOD's true people. This was his calling, of course, and so, the text tells us, even out of his own fatigue, Jesus "began to teach them many things."
The question for us to ponder is will we be more like the disciples looking to hide from time to time from God’s calling to minister to his people in whatever capacity we can or will we, no matter how much we have going on in our lives pause from our daily grind to minister to those in need. This, as Jesus so beautifully and compassionately shows us, is a sign of true leadership.
