people: feeding them, giving them drink, pursuing them again and again in order to of-fer the greatest gift of all, God’s sacrificial love for us. God fol-lows us quietly, gently. How can we respond? Receiv-ing the living bread in Com-munion is a beginning. Reflect-

ing on the mellowness of God is another. And simply slowing down, stopping running away and instead let-ting the Lord find us. God’s kindhearted and also tough love is quite worth the struggle. God is the one who will send us into the world (if he can catch us!). Here is how Paul puts it in the Second Reading. Be imitators of God, as beloved children, and live in love, as Christ loved us and handed himself over for us as a sacrificial offering to God for a fragrant aroma.

* The word Baal is ordinarily pronounced to rhyme with the word “pale.” Elijah himself arranged a contest between the god of Ahab, called Baal, and the one true God. He had the Baal prophets arrange a sacrifice for the burning of a young bull, but he would not allow them to light the fire. Baal himself should do this. They agreed and for much of the day they carried on with incantations, calling out to their god, hopping around, and even slashing themselves with swords, but nothing at all happened. “There was not a sound; no one answered, and no one was listening” (I Kings 18:29). Eli-jah taunted them with the famous lines, “Call louder, for he is a god and may be meditating, or may have retired, or may be on a journey. Perhaps he is asleep and must be awakened.” (Or as else-where in the bible, maybe he has “turned aside” to relieve him-self.) Elijah then arranged an exactly similar sacrifice, this time to the God of Israel, He was so sure of God that he doused the wood with jar after jar of water. Then, after a short prayer, the wood burst into flames (I Kings 18:21-40). The Baalite people threw themselves to the ground and worshipped the God of Israel. But Elijah had the prophets killed.

Taking Care of Us It was in the land ruled by Jezebel. Elijah had just come from a dangerous showdown with 450 prophets of the god called Baal. The God of Israel easily won this encounter,* but Elijah progressed into doing great violence against the surviving prophets anyway. Queen Jezebel, understandably enraged, sent a mes-sage that she would do the same thing to Elijah and more within that same day. Elijah was frightened, exhausted and dispirited, espe-cially when he came back to find the Israelites them-selves being unfaithful to the only true God. Elijah be-came depressed in spite of his great triumph. So he prayed to God to give immediate death to his worth-less self. Then—as depressed people will sometimes do—he went to sleep. He lay under a broom tree (a tall hedge that desert people used to shield them-selves from the sun in the day and the wind at night). God could have been harsh to Elijah as a result of his depressed prayer. But instead, a quiet touch from God’s angel awakened the prophet. The angel whis-pered, “get up and eat.” Lo and behold, “there at his head was a hearth cake and a jug of water.” Elijah did eat and drink, but then he settled right back to sleep again. The angel whispered tenderly, “Get up and eat, else the journey will be too long for you!” Eli-jah did and was strengthened. We are witnessing a mother’s care, giving food to the discouraged child (First Reading). The other readings are all about God’s kindness to too, his goodness even in small things. The Respon-sorial Psalm invites us to share in it: “Taste and see the goodness of the Lord. … I sought the Lord, and he answered me and delivered me from all my fears.” In the Gospel, Jesus offers nourishment too, but this time the provisions are for a very long journey indeed: eternal life. The people listening (called by John, “the Jews”) will not have a bit of it. They argue among themselves, ridiculing his silly offer of miraculous food. They “murmur” that they knew his parents, which made him just a local boy acting crazy. Jesus ordered them to stop grousing and listen. He made the same comparison that we saw last week, between manna that came down from heaven in the desert and him-self, “the living bread that came down from heaven.” Jesus as living bread is a bit difficult to understand. But leave that aside for a moment and just concen-trate on the deliberate kindness God shows to his

¿Por que Pan? En la Biblia, cada palabra pesa su valor. Los mate-riales de su producción eran caros: el papiro o per-gamino, la tinta y las horas gastadas en escribirlas a mano. Así, cada narración evangélica tiene importan-cia y las palabras se miden por su claridad y comuni-cación. Por ejemplo, hoy se oye que Jesús se enoja, no por un "grito" de la gente, sino porque su auditorio comi-enza a "murmurar". Él los para en seco. "Gritar" revo-luciona; "murmurar" sólo provoca disgustos. Los esclavos en Egipto "gritaron" su inconformidad. El grupo delante de Jesús no lo confronta con argu-mentos, sino con chismes, pidiendole una limosna de comida. Lo que él les dice no los satisface. Ellos es-peran un pan milagroso y él les ofrece una vida en la presencia de un Dios que los ama hasta acompañar-los en sus luchas. Su auditorio no entiende nada. El se ha declarado el alimento enviado por Dios para con ellos, lo que no les agrada. Quieren alimentarse, no con la vida de un rabino itinerante, sino con un pan milagroso. Por esto, comienzan a chismear sobre su pasado, su parentezco y su pueblo natal. "¿...qué cosa buena puede salir de Nazaret? (Juan 1,46)" Su oferta les parecía una tontería. ¿Por qué podrían ser las experiencias de él más imagen de Dios que las de ellos? Él era uno de ellos: sus san-dalias también recogían el polvo del camino, sus ojos se abrían para capturar el mismo amanecer y sus manos partían todo pan que llegaba a la mesa. Sus oyentes buscaban otra cosa, rara y más exótica. Por esto, ellos murmuraban. Para ellos, como para nosotros, Jesús es demasiado humano. Al escoger el pan como signo de su presen-cia, él nos enseña cómo lo debemos ver. Él se com-para con nuestro alimento más básico. El pan deja migajas y es frágil; se parte, se mastica, se traga y se bota. Se cocina en la oscuridad de la madrugada y se vuelve mojoso y duro por la tarde. Es pan. Como los contemporáneos de Jesús, nosotros también aceptamos sólo con dificultad al carpintero de Nazaret como el signo de la presencia de Dios en nuestro mundo. Tenemos el mismo problema para aceptar el pan con todas sus cualidades como señal de la presencia de Jesús. Atribuimos al pan euca-rístico unas propiedades que para muchos sólo dis-minuyen su poder y precisión como signo de Jesús.

Sin embargo, Jesús quería que su presencia fuera como la del pan: frágil, partido, nu-tritivo y común. Si no fuera así, se hubiera escogido otra cosa. Uno que intenta hacer de la eucristía algo diferente que no se toca ni se come o que sólo se ve a cierta dis-tancia, no respeta ni la natu-

raleza del signo ni la realidad que representa. El Jesús histórico fue accesible y no se debe permitir lo contrario hoy en día. Es cierto que, para hacerlo más accesible, hasta los límites de su vida física: raza, historia y lengua, se han desaparecido en el proceso de su Resurrección. Nuestra participación en la eucaristía depende de nuestro deseo de vivir según las normas de Jesús. ¿Vivimos o no como vivía él, para los que necesitan oír del reino de Dios ? Al comer el cuerpo del Señor, debemos ver más clara la identificación entre nuestras vidas y el propósito de Jesús. Debemos ordenar nuestras vidas según la posibilidad de compartir las tareas de cambio a la sociedad presente y egoísta. Queremos que el mundo se vuelva el lugar justo, amoroso y compasivo que Dios había creado, así estableciendo las normas que permiten nuestra celebración litúrgi-ca. Entonces, ¿por qué el pan? ¿Qué propósito tiene? ¿No habría sido más fácil terminar las liturgias con el abrazo después del Padre Nuestro? No lo creemos. Según la mente de Cristo, no hay compromiso sin migajas, ningún futuro sin fragilidad, nada nuevo sin alimentos. Este pan partido es de todos y, si se-guimos a Jesús, llegará a ser, no sólo Jesús, sino todos.

STEWARDSHIP CORNER The city of Ephesus was one of St. Paul’s major centers of opera-tion. Although his letter to the Ephesians is not lengthy (it is about one-third the size of his let-ters to the Corinthians), many scholars consider it to be the most theologically sound of all his let-

ters. One of Paul’s major purposes in writing it was to make clear to the Gentiles that they have been brought together with the Jews in the Body of Christ. Unity is important, as much now as in the early Church. Furthermore, Ephesians is one of Paul’s most encour-aging letters. In the interest of Christian unity Paul in-cludes an important piece of advice in today’s Second Reading: “All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and re-viling must be removed from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ.” The idea of forgiveness is so important to us if we truly wish to be Christians and good stewards. Most of us understand that we need to be forgiven, but that does not make it any easier for us to forgive. Yet, that is at the basis of our ability to be unified and loving in the way Paul advises. When we learn to forgive, we take a large step toward holiness, as indicated by the famous quote from Alexander Pope, “To err is human, to for-give, divine.”

Saturday, August 15, is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary. Because this falls on a Saturday the obligation has been dispensed, however we will have a special mass at 8:30am, in English, for those who would like to celebrate our Lady's assumption into heaven.
