PASTOR'S NOTES FOURTH SUNDAY OF EASTER

Shepherds were never held in high regard by the society. In fact, they were thought of as being one step above a criminal. Shepherds were known to put their lives “on the line” to protect their sheep from any danger. At night fall, the shepherds would place all their sheep into one common pen called a sheepfold. The walls were usually made out of stone with one entrance. One shepherd would then sleep across and thus be the gate to the pen: “a sheep gate”. The purpose for sleeping across the entrance was not only to keep the sheep in, but also to protect the sheep from thieves. So when Jesus said, “I am the gate for the sheep”, his listeners understood his role as Shepherd. By being the sheep gate, he would be risk his own life to protect not only his own sheep, but all sheep. Our Lady of Fatima-May 13

In the small Portuguese village of Fati-ma, the Blessed Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to three shepherd chil-dren. On six occasions between May and October 1917, Our Lady appeared to Lucia dos Santos and her two cous-ins, Francisco and Jacinta Marto. Ac-

cording to an account of the events given by Lucia, Mary entrusted the children with three secrets and encouraged them to do acts of penance and say the rosary every day. Thousands of people came to Fatima upon hearing of the visions, and on October 13, some 70,000 people reportedly witnessed a mi-raculous solar event. Fatima is now a major site of Marian pilgrimage. Remember, if you do not display your placard or if you are not disa-bled and you use one of these spaces, you are subject to a citation and a minimum fine of $342.50. With regards to parking in the Red Zones, the ex-cuse of “I’ll just be a minute”, is no reason to park in these designated areas. Parking for any length of time in these spaces could result in obstructing or delaying an emergency crew and its vehicle. Thank you all for your cooperation. First Eucharist & Confirmation In the next few weeks children from our School and Children’s Faith Formation Program will be receiv-ing their First Communion. Members of our Youth Program and Adult Faith Formation will be receiv-ing the Sacrament of Conformation as well. Please keep them in your prayers. for the sheep."
