THE GIFT OF BELIEVING

When Saint Ignatius Loyola was asked to open

a school for young men in 1547, no one could

have imagined that this small band of traveling

Jesuits would become the greatest teaching

organization the world has ever known. They

succeeded because they believed in the power

of education to transform minds and souls.

More than 400 years later, we are privileged

to be the stewards of an institution that has

benefited from the many gifts Saint Ignatius

and his followers inspired. We believe, because

we have witnessed so many wonderful transformations at Saint Peter’s College.

We believe in the enduring strength of our Jesuit mission and identity. Our College community

is rejoicing over our new partnership with St. Aedan’s: The Saint Peter’s College Church and the

generous donation that will bring a Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible to campus. This

magnificent gift will be utilized in so many ways, from academics to liturgy, and provides the

extraordinary opportunity for members of our College community to touch and experience the

Word of God.

We believe in our dedicated faculty, administrators and staff who work tirelessly on behalf of

students so they may realize their full potential. Most of all, we believe in our students. Like the

generations of outstanding Saint Peter’s graduates that came before them, many are still the first in

their families to attend college. They are bright, intellectually curious and hungry for opportunities

to prove their worth in the workplace and the world.

Saint Peter’s students are compassionate, as evidenced by the 16,000 hours of community

service donated last year and they are tough competitors. The 2010-2011 year will go down in the

history books for the four Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championships, as well as

team and individual appearances in NCAA Division I Tournaments and Championships.

It is evident that you believe, too. This fiscal year saw a significant increase in gifts to Students

at the Center: The Campaign for Saint Peter’s College. Thank you for believing in our students,

our mission and our vision to be a leading Jesuit institution, known for its innovation in urban

education and for sending forth principled, successful graduates who make a real difference in their

professions and communities.

GUARINI LECTURE SERIES KICKS OFF

INSIDE RARE BOOKS AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS The new Guarini Center for Community Memory in the O’Toole Library houses well-known items such as the congressional pa-pers of retired New Jersey Congressman Frank J. Guarini H ’94. Less known are the 3,000 volumes contained in Rare Books and Special Collections. Among the many treasures: the Dictionary of the English Language, the first known English dictionary authored by Samuel Johnson and published in 1755, and a more than 500-year-old Bible printed 30 years after the first Gutenberg Bible.

How the Bible came to Saint Peter’s is still something of a mystery. David Hardgrove, M.L.S., associate librarian who oversees Rare Books and Special Collections, believes the Jesuits brought some of the items when they were exiled from Europe in the 18th century. The Bible and other rare items were discovered when the library began digitizing its records.

The new Center also provides dedicated space for special collections that include the personal collected works of famed editor and publisher Robert Giroux, an extensive set of theater

arts titles donated by Roy Barnitt, Jr. ’54 and an author’s section featuring works by faculty and alumni. The College’s literary treasures, says Hardgrove, can finally be displayed and discovered. “I’m really thrilled,” he said. “Having this space available, we’re able to show what we have.”

The journey from Roy Irving Theatre to the Senate Chamber floor has been nothing short of amazing for Sen. Robert Menendez ’76. The alumnus returned to Saint Peter’s to speak about his quintessentially American story and the future of the country as part of the Guarini Lecture Series held on September 29. The lecture and question and answer session was the second in a yearlong series presented by the Guarini Institute for Government and Leadership.

“As someone who grew up poor, the only way I came to Saint Peter’s College was through Pell and Perkins loans,” said Sen. Menendez. “I understand the power of that educational opportunity, and I am not about to allow America to move backwards in creating the opportunity for future generations of students.”

The son of Cuban immigrants, Menendez entered public service as a 19-year-old Saint Peter’s undergraduate

and was elected to the Union City Board of Education in 1974. As a mayor, New Jersey State legislator, congressman and now U.S. Senator, he has been a tireless advocate for health care, homeland security, banking reform and issues that affect the safety, health and well-being of Americans.

Attendees at the lecture questioned Sen. Menendez about the current status of the DREAM Act, also known as Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors, as well as the current state of the Democratic Party.

“Having that dialogue and asking the hard questions is one of the things that is most rewarding for students,” said Nicholas A. Chiaravalloti, Esq., executive director of the Guarini Institute for Government and Leadership. “That is our core mission—to give students the opportunity to get in front of influential leaders and ask those questions themselves.”

The Guarini Institute provides a non-partisan forum for the discussion of key public policy issues. It was established in 1994 with generous support from New Jersey Congressman Frank J. Guarini H ’94.

CLASS OF 2015

FOUR FACULTY MEMBERS AWARDED BENE MERENTI

REACHING ADULT LEARNERS TWO ONLINE DEGREES INTRODUCED

Saint Peter’s College honored four faculty members with Bene Merenti awards at the Faculty Convocation held on September 6. The Bene Merenti is conferred each fall on faculty members, administrators and staff who have given 20 years of faithful and loyal service to the College. Recipients included: Michael Doody, M.B.A. ’90, associate director for the Center for Advancement in Language and Learning (CALL); Barbara Melchione, M.A., director of CALL; Lisa O’Neill, Ph.D., professor of philosophy, and Fatima Shaik, M.A., lecturer in the communication department.

The ceremony also recognized Robert Koch, M.B.A., associate professor of accounting; John Munro, M.A., adjunct lecturer of history; and Anne Rosario, B.A., director of EOF (Equal Opportunity Fund), for 40 years of dedicated service to Saint Peter’s.

Busy professionals now have the opportunity to complete two academic programs at Saint Peter’s College online. The College is offering its Master of Arts in Criminal Justice Administration and the popular R.N. to B.S.N. (Bachelor of Science in Nursing) to online learners. In recent years, faculty members have conducted classes or portions of classes online, but this marks the first time that Saint Peter’s students will be able to complete an entire degree program online. The College will continue to offer both programs on campus as well.

“Saint Peter’s online programs are ideal for career-focused students,” said Marylou Yam, Ph.D., provost and vice president for academic affairs. “They allow motivated individuals who either want to further their current careers or change fields to experience a Jesuit education while still working full time.”

The online criminal justice master’s degree program gives students a choice of concentrations in either Police Administration or Federal Law Enforcement Agency Administration. Like the on-campus program, it is based on core principles of ethical leadership, responsible management and constitutional justice. A business component enables students to learn how to be organizational leaders in the criminal justice field.

The R.N. to B.S.N. is geared toward nurses who have already attained their R.N. license. With a B.S.N., nursing professionals have a wider choice of health care settings to practice in and are attractive candidates for positions because patient outcomes are improved when nurses have baccalaureate degrees. The program also prepares nursing students for graduate study.

Courses for online degree programs are scheduled to be launched this academic year. For more information, visit www.saintpetersonline.com.

Say hello to the Class of 2015! Freshmen began their first day of classes on August 31. Prior to the start of the 2011-2012 academic year, incoming freshmen became better acquainted with The Jesuit College of New Jersey during First-Year Orientation, held in several sessions throughout the summer. The newest class at Saint Peter’s joins a student body that represents 70 nationalities and speaks nearly 40 different languages.

It is a time of great joy for the Saint Peter’s College community. Support of

Students at the Center: The Campaign for Saint Peter’s College is enriching

our Jesuit Mission and Identity in profound ways. The generosity of a single

benefactor will bring a Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible to campus,

a celebrated work that will deepen our connections with each other and God.

Campus ministry programs are thriving. And St. Aedan’s: The Saint Peter’s

College Church is alive with spiritual and faith-filled activity led by the

Jesuits of Saint Peter’s.

This illumination from The Saint John’s Bible has special significance for the Saint Peter’s College community. The scene is the Confession of Peter and the image is Jesus’ acceptance of God’s revelation to Peter that he is both Christ and the Son of God. Jesus selects Peter to be the leader of the Apostles, stating, “And on this rock I will build my church.”

A nationwide movement of interfaith cooperation is underway and Saint Peter’s College students are a part of it. Titled

“Better Together,” the initiative is designed to mobilize students on campuses throughout the country to be a force for inclusion.

Last summer three Saint Peter’s students, who also serve on the College’s Interfaith Council, attended a leadership training program at Georgetown University that was conducted by the Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), the sponsor of “Better Together.”

“The idea is that when people share faith and tradition together, when they act and serve together, when they work for a common cause… we are all better together,” explained Mary Sue Callan-Farley, director of campus ministry.

Luis Cruz ’13 described the leadership training as energizing and inspiring. “It showed us that people from different backgrounds can come together and talk about their identities and similarities instead of their differences,” he said. “‘Better Together’ will be a great thing for Saint Peter’s.”

In addition to integrating the campaign into robust service and spiritual programs, the Office of Campus Ministry also responded to the President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge. President Barack Obama has called on the nation’s colleges to submit plans that model how to build bridges along lines of difference. Saint Peter’s submitted a plan that drew on its legacy of serving immigrant populations in an inclusive community where cura personalis, care for the whole person, rules. In all, 225 colleges participated in the challenge and the White House will recognize the best examples at a future date.

Callan-Farley described these interfaith initiatives as positive efforts that are very much in keeping with Saint Peter’s core mission. “Part of the reason we do this is because we are a Jesuit, Catholic school,” she said. “It’s part of our values and it’s a way for us to speak very clearly about what the Catholic Church teaches.”

t is a gift like no other. As part of a gift to Students at the Center, a single benefactor is bringing a Heritage Edition of The Saint John’s Bible to The Jesuit College of New Jersey this year. The fine

art reproduction of the first known handwritten and illuminated Bible in more than 500 years will strengthen the College’s Catholic and Jesuit identity.

“The whole idea of the Bible is that this was to be the living Word of God that is out and available to the public,” said the College’s Vice President for Mission and Ministry Rev. Michael L. Braden, S.J. “The assumption is that this is a Bible that is going to be used.”

The original Saint John’s Bible was commissioned by Saint John’s Abbey in Wales and Saint John’s University in Collegeville, Minn. Spearheaded by renowned calligrapher Donald Jackson, teams of artists in Wales and scholars in Minnesota worked together to create a multivolume Bible that is, in the words of His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, “a work for eternity.”

The Heritage Edition, which is limited to 299 editions, is an extraordinary combination of calligraphy and illumination that will serve as a learning and spiritual tool for the entire campus community. Fr. Braden noted that the Bible could enrich liturgy through a scriptures course or prayer services centered on the illuminations, and could also be taken “on the road” to share with other parishes. “It becomes prayerful as people look at the illuminations,” he said. “To read it forces you to slow down and become contemplative. It becomes a meditation of God’s word if you give it time.”

The Bible will also be a valuable resource for the study of history, theology, art history, fine arts and other academic disciplines. Best of all, said Associate Professor of Fine Arts Beatrice Mady, “Our students can touch and actually feel the pages. It’s a spectacular thing for us to have.”

In many faith-based College communities, The Saint John’s Bible has sparked deeper connections with Catholic social teaching. “The offices of Campus Ministry and Community Service are doing an outstanding job of engaging students and building on the Jesuit ideal of developing ‘Men and Women for Others,’” said Michael A. Fazio, vice president of advancement and external affairs. “We hope The Saint John’s Bible provides the opportunity for more alumni and friends to learn about the vibrant spiritual life on campus and the initiatives that will take it to the next level.”

CELEBRATING A NEW CHAPTERA special Mass held on August 21 to mark the official beginning of

St. Aedan’s: The Saint Peter’s College Church was the first step in

bringing two faith-filled communities together. The main celebrant,

the Most Rev. Thomas A. Donato, D.D., led more than 600 attendees

in prayer. Bishop Donato welcomed the inclusion of Saint Peter’s

into the historic Jersey City church as a means to sustain and

enrich the spiritual life of the St. Aedan’s and College communities.

The Most Rev. Thomas Donato, D.D., led a special Mass on August 21, a celebration that marked the official joining of the Saint Peter’s College and St. Aedan’s communities.

Page 11: Saint Peter's College Magazine - Fall 2011

BRIDGING TWO COMMUNITIESRev. Vincent Sullivan, S.J., says it’s good to be back in the pastoral world again. The rector of the Saint Peter’s College Jesuit community, Fr. Sullivan has deep experience ministering to Catholic parishes and assumed the role of administrator of St. Aedan’s: The Saint Peter’s College Church in July.

“People have been, by and large, welcoming and friendly,” Fr. Sullivan said, noting that the special Mass and communal barbeque held on August 21 “made for a very nice spirit. People expressed gratitude.”

The Jesuit is keeping an open mind on the future at St. Aedan’s: The Saint Peter’s College Church. The church continues to serve the community; the calendar is filled with parish rituals such as baptisms and weddings, while cherished parish events like the annual carnival endure. Rev. Peter Gyves, S.J., who joined the Saint Peter’s Jesuit community in July, presides over the Spanish Mass on Sunday.

“At our last Mass we had about 150 people from all over Latin America,” said Fr. Gyves, a practicing pediatrician who served as director for the Institute of Investigations in Health Sciences in Guatemala prior to being appointed pastoral associate at St. Aedan’s: The Saint Peter’s College Church. “When I came back home to be involved with this parish, one of my hopes was to minister to a growing Latino community.”

The Saint Peter’s Jesuits are also exploring ways to integrate the College into the life of the parish. Events such as the Mass of the Holy Spirit, which marks the start of the academic year, was held at St. Aedan’s: The Saint Peter’s College Church on September 14 and the Baccalaureate Mass will be held at the church in May. The Jesuits hope that the Saint Peter’s community will have more opportunities to learn from the deep traditions of St. Aedan’s and that the faith experience of all will be enriched through Ignatian spirituality.

“Right now we’re settling in and getting to know the people and their needs,” Fr. Sullivan noted. “We think there might be a hunger for that type of thing and that a number of people would be primed for Ignatian spirituality programs.”

Goodbye Cushing,

The demolition phase for a new student center. College President Eugene Cornacchia, manned the excavator.

Cushing Alumni House opened at Saint Peter’s College in 1964. It was named for His Eminence Richard Cardinal Cushing, Archbishop of Boston who visited the College earlier that year. Then College President Rev. Edward Clark, S.J., awarded the Petrean Medal to the Archbishop during his visit. For nearly 50 years, the building at 45 Glenwood Avenue served as the official headquarters for the College’s Alumni Association.

Eugene J. Cornacchia, Ph.D., president of Saint Peter’s College, kicked off the event and briefly manned the large exca-vator for this phase of the project. All four structures have been razed and the site is being readied for the foundation.

The official groundbreaking for the student center, a six-story, nearly 90,000-square-foot structure that will be the hub of campus life, was held on October 26. Students, faculty, administrators, city officials, members of the Board of Trustees and other guests attended the groundbreaking ceremony. Students at the Center: The Campaign for Saint Peter’s College, the largest capital campaign in the history of the College, will fund the signature facility.

It’s full speed ahead for the student center at

Saint Peter’s College. On July 20, the College

began demolition on four Glenwood Avenue

buildings, including Cushing Alumni House.

A few days before the demolition began,

alumni and employees paid a formal farewell

to Cushing and left personal messages and

drawings on the interior walls.

Hello Student Center

Alumni and employees left messages and hand drawn images on the walls of Cushing Alumni House prior to the demolition. Following the official groundbreaking for the new student center on October 26, work is proceeding on the six-story facility. The anticipated opening for the student center is 2013.

A Tribute to ‘Dziadzi’ In 1962, Walter Potyrala did something extraordinary for the time: he completed his bachelor’s degree at age 50. A university student in Poland, Potyrala fled to America in the early 1930s to avoid conscription by the German army. Married and with a family to support, Potyrala worked as a stationary engineer and began a business, but refused to give up his dream of earning a college diploma. His dream finally came true when Saint Peter’s College accepted the majority of

the academic credits he earned from three years of study at Jagiellonian University. Potyrala returned to the classroom as a full-time student in 1961, finished his bachelor’s degree and went on to teach foreign languages at Bayonne High School until he retired. The alumnus never forgot the opportunities that Saint Peter’s and the Jesuits afforded him, and neither has his family. Potyrala’s grandchildren, Jamie and Scott Bastek, have made a generous $100,000 gift to Students at the Center: The Campaign for Saint Peter’s College to honor the memory of their grandfather, whom they affectionately called “Dziadzi.” “Our grandfather was the progenitor of our intellectual and academic pursuits,” said Jamie and Scott, whose parents are Carol Potyrala Bastek, Ed.D., ’70 and the late James V. Bastek, M.D., ’67. “Dziadzi was a soft-spoken influence in our lives who loved his experiences with the Jesuits in Poland. We are also grateful for what Saint Peter’s did for our Dziadzi, as it also helped shape the life of our [family] and our lives as well.” The Bastek family has a deep appreciation for Jesuit education and values. Following in the family tradition of attending Jesuit schools (Carol was in the first class of women to matriculate to the Saint Peter’s day session in 1966), Jamie and Scott are both graduates of Georgetown University.

Jamie is a physician currently finishing a fellowship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. She earned her medical degree from the Georgetown University School of Medicine and also holds a Master of Science in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Pennsylvania. Scott earned a Master of Science in Economics from the London School of Economics and works for the San Francisco branch of NERA Economic Consulting, an international economic consulting firm. The Bastek gift will be used for the construction of the new student center and a plaque outside a Student Life conference room will be placed in Potyrala’s honor. The munificent gesture is also in keeping with the family’s tradition of giving to Saint Peter’s. Potyrala made annual gifts to the College and Carol endowed the Dr. James V. Bastek Honors Program in 2004. “We are both privileged to be able to honor our grandfather, who had a vision and a dream, made possible by Saint Peter’s almost five decades ago, because the College took a chance and offered a 50-year-old man an opportunity to be a student again,” Jamie and Scott said. “Dziadzi believed in education and the key it holds to the future. His legacy lives on in us.”

Students at the Center: The Campaign for Saint Peter’s College is officially underway. Since the Campaign’s gala celebration last May, donors have responded with nearly $2 million in additional gifts, bringing the total raised to date to $46.5 million, which is 75 percent of goal. Donors believe in the priorities established for the largest capital campaign in the history of Saint Peter’s. From the new student center to academics and Peacock Nation, alumni and friends are demonstrating their conviction in the ability of a Jesuit education to empower students and change lives.

THE INDEPENDENT COLLEGE FUND OF NEW JERSEYSaint Peter’s College continues to benefit from generous corporate and foundation support given through the Independent College Fund of New Jersey. Begun in 1953, the Fund makes a single, united annual request to corporations and foundations on behalf of the 14 member colleges. For 58 years, the Fund has continued to secure corporate financial support for the State’s independent colleges and to promote a greater understanding of the importance of maintaining the opportunity for choice between public and private education. The Independent College Fund of New Jersey represents all of the State’s fully accredited, privately controlled colleges and universities, except those that are engaged primarily in religious studies. The following donors contributed to the Fund in calendar year 2010. Most gifts are allocated by formula although a number are designated to specific institutions. Support in 2010 for independent higher education in New Jersey through the Fund totaled $1,250,024.93.

Exciting moments from the MAAC Championship and NCAA Tournament.

PEACOCK BLUE

few years ago, standout hurdler Ronnah Parham ’12 took a chance in choosing to attend Saint Peter’s College. She knew the College would deliver on

academics. But the women’s track and field team was a fledgling program.

Still, she listened when Head Coach

Michael Massone told her the team was on a mission to build a quality program. “I just knew this is where I was meant to be,” recalled Parham, an education and psychology major from Piscataway, N.J. “I wanted to be a part of building the program.”

Her hunch has paid off big time. Last

year, the Peahens captured both the indoor and outdoor MAAC championships. The indoor and outdoor titles were the first in the program’s history. Parham set a meet record in the indoor 55-meter hurdles and was named the outdoor meet’s most outstanding performer with a new MAAC record in the 100-meter hurdles and

MAAC CHAMPS x 2The Saint Peter’s women’s track and field team emerged as the hands-down team to beat last year, capturing both the indoor and outdoor Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) championships. The season ahead looks just as promising.

another win in the 400-meter hurdles.Meanwhile, Massone was named

MAAC coach of the year for both the indoor and outdoor seasons. The key to the team’s success, according to the veteran coach, was teamwork.

“We are bringing in student-athletes who are very unselfish and willing to sacrifice for the good of the team,” said Massone, who also coaches the men’s team. “They only worry about the championship. They know exactly what their goals are and will methodically train for that goal. The members of this team are not impatient. They understand it takes time.”

Parham agreed. “Our team was very dedicated. We were prepared mentally and physically. We knew we could get the job done.”

The team has outstanding depth in the sprints, jumps and throws. In fact, the outdoor meet saw the Peahens score in all but five events.

The 4x100 relay team of Asha Daley ’12, Aigner Holmes ’12, Latasha Green ’14 and Stefanny Laureano ’14, grabbed gold, with throwers Khadeen Issacs ’12 in the discus, Cristina Vilsant ’13 in the hammer, and Sunita Kumar ’14 in the javelin, all winning their events, and Regina Raglan ’14 taking second in the hammer.

Sprinters who took home silver included Daley in the 100-meter dash and 100 hurdles, Shona Potrzuski ’14 in the 400 hurdles, and the 4x400 relay team of Gina Nocerino ’14, Melody Lopez-Bernstein ’12, Laureano and Potrzuski.

Not to be outdone, Renee Brzyski ’13 took second in the pole vault, with other second-place finishes scored by Issacs in the high jump and Cherrice Brown ’13 in the discus.

Almost immediately following the indoor championship, Massone’s phone started ringing, with parents and prospective student-athletes all wanting more information about the Peahen program. Massone said high school coaches have been especially supportive and helped spur the program’s rise from a roster of eight to a team of 40.

To make the grade on Massone’s team, student-athletes have to score in the classroom, as well. In fact, 18 of the 71 student-athletes named to the MAAC Academic Honor Roll in 2011 were from the men’s and women’s track and field teams. To be eligible for the honor, student-athletes must earn a minimum 3.2 GPA and be in their second year of athletic eligibility.

“From day one when students come in,

the priority is academics first,” Massone said. “They are students first, athletes second.”

Massone is looking to the upcoming indoor season with confidence. “I’m very confident that we have a much stronger team than last year, and we’re very deep,” he said of the women’s team, adding that the Peacocks, too, will be outstanding. “I feel like we’re good enough to win again.”

Greater participation by alumni and friends in Peacock Nation, a booster club and giving society, will only help to strengthen the program and support outstanding student-athletes in their strive for excellence.

“We’re in a better place,” Parham noted. “We’re all pulling together to make the program better.”

“WE ARE BRINGING IN STUDENT-ATHLETES WHO ARE VERY UNSELFISH AND WILLING TO SACRIFICE

FOR THE GOOD OF THE TEAM.” [

IT’S A DUNNE DEAL!

It was an exciting ride for the men’s basketball team last year with the Peacocks notching their first 20-win season in 11 years, along with their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship and first NCAA Tournament nod in 16 years.

At the center of it all was veteran Head Coach John Dunne, who recently earned an extension of his Saint Peter’s contract through the 2015–2016 season.

The 14th head coach in the history of men’s basketball at the College, Dunne came to Saint Peter’s six years ago determined to rebuild a program that had been struggling. In his first two seasons at the helm, the Peacocks won a combined 11 games. But then the team took off on a winning trajectory, with 11 wins in 2009 and 16 a year later. Over the past three seasons, the Peacocks have won 47 games, 30 of those in MAAC competition.

Dunne has built the Peacocks’ success on defense. Over the past two years, Saint Peter’s has emerged as one of the top defensive teams in the country, limiting opponents to 37.6 percent shooting last season.

“John has done an excellent job rebuilding the men’s basketball program over the past five years,” said Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott. “Throughout his tenure he has guided our student-athletes to success both on the court and in the classroom. We are excited about the future of Saint Peter’s basketball with Coach Dunne leading the way.”

ollowing the Saint Peter’s College graduation in 1899, two members of the class prepared to embark on careers that would distinguish them

as leaders during one of the darkest times in our nation’s history.

The first, Robert Rush Rankin, would later join the Society of Jesus and serve as a chaplain to the U.S. Army during World War I. The second, Joseph Tumulty, went into politics and emerged as a political advisor and secretary to President Woodrow Wilson, accompanying the president to Capitol Hill on the day Wilson delivered his declaration of war.

They were two of many Saint Peter’s graduates who would go on to serve their country during wartime, most as soldiers on the front lines.

Now, Saint Peter’s College is poised to honor veterans who lost their lives in battle with a memorial planned for a courtyard near the new student center. Called A Tribute to Sacrifice, the memorial will feature a stone wall honoring Saint Peter’s fallen heroes. Another initiative, A Tribute to Service, will recognize members of the Saint Peter’s community by publishing the stories of those who have served in the United States military on a new website.

Thomas Donnelly, Ph.D., a professor emeritus at the College, has culled information on Saint Peter’s veterans from archives, the web and conversations with alumni and others. Professional genealogy researcher Suzanne Rose has also joined the research project.

Together, the pair has unearthed the stories of more than 1,200 members of the College community who served in wars ranging from World War I through the current conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. Plans call for Rose to start researching another 1,200 names this fall.

Dr. Donnelly says the desire to serve comes naturally to graduates of Saint Peter’s and other Jesuit institutions who walk in the footsteps of Saint Ignatius Loyola, a soldier who experienced a conversion before founding the Society of Jesus.

“This is not a glorification of war, but rather a reverence for life,” Dr. Donnelly says of the Tribute to Service. “(This) will honor all Saint Peter’s College students who served in the military. They followed the path of Saint Ignatius by their willingness to put their lives on the line in service to others. There is selflessness in Ignatian spirituality, which tends to inspire those who encounter it to service. Ignatius

imitated Christ by giving his life every day for others. His students for generations after are often no less motivated.”

The information Dr. Donnelly and Rose have uncovered is, at times, both inspiring and heart-wrenching.

As World War I raged in Europe, Fr. Rankin, on leave from his Army camp in January 1918, returned to Saint Peter’s to deliver a rousing address to students. His message: “No true American can be a good Catholic without being at the same time a loyal citizen of our country.”

Fr. Rankin’s speech so inspired the students that many followed him up Hudson Boulevard to Journal Square to enlist. Some never returned home from the war. So far, the research has identified two, James P. McGovern and Alfred Joseph Shine, who lost their lives. Dr. Donnelly expects the continuing research to reveal more.

With most of its students off to war, the College closed in fall 1918 and didn’t re-open until 1930. But seven years later, World War II broke out, and the Saint Peter’s College community again responded with great patriotism.

The College initiated an accelerated war schedule to graduate students faster

so they could join the war effort. Records indicate that more than 1,600 alumni and 1,000 students enlisted, with 300 women enrolled in the College’s nursing program signing on with the United States Nurses’ Cadet Corp.

Individual stories filtered back to campus. The school newspaper, The Pauw Wow, reported in 1942 that Lt. John J. Mullen ’40 was injured in a naval engagement between Allied and Japanese cruisers in the Solomon Islands. Lt. Mullen served as the communication officer on the U.S.S. Astoria, which sank in the battle.

Other students rushed to enlist, with 56 joining up during an East Coast recruiting tour held on campus at Collins Gymnasium. Another 29 reported for duty at Fort Dix and Camp Upton seven months later.

Tales of bravery abounded. Rev. John Ruane, S.J., now professor emeritus of philosophy, endured imprisonment by the Japanese in the Philippines, where he and the other prisoners faced limited rations and abuse at the hands of sadistic guards.

Fr. Ruane and Rev. Wallace Pangborn, who later served as a Saint Peter’s theology professor, were among the 2,146 prisoners freed from the concentration camp during a 1945 raid.

Lt. Martin J. Higgins ’39 received the Silver Star and other decorations for commanding the Lost Battalion in 1944. Cut off behind German lines, Lt. Higgins staved off enemy attack for five days. Interred in a POW camp in a later campaign, the alumnus proved to be an exemplary soldier and consummate leader.

The late Patrick J. Caulfield, Ph.D. ’47, who later went on to found the Department of Education at Saint Peter’s College, served in France and Belgium. In his book, A Bedtime Story for my Children and Grandchildren, published posthumously following his death in 2002, he described many battles in which he witnessed friends killed or severely wounded.

“It is impossible to describe the feeling one gets going into battle a second or third time,” Caulfield wrote. “The first time, you

don’t know how bad it will be. The next time and every time thereafter you know, and it is worse than the first time.”

Dr. Donnelly hopes the memorial, which will include an image of Saint Ignatius, will provide an opportunity for students and visitors to take time from their busy schedules to remember the sacrifices others in the College community have made in the name of freedom.

“The inclusion of Saint Ignatius makes this something more than a typical memorial in any county or state,” he said. “It gives you pause to think, ‘What would Ignatius say? What kind of man was he and what kind of person were they?’”
