future opportunities to help at the Ronald McDonald House. ! FSHP also arranged two separate tours of Anazao Health Corporation’s Nuclear Pharmacy. A total of 17 students were given the opportunity to further broaden their perspective of pharmacy by touring this innovative facility. Students learned about opportunities in nuclear pharmacy and what a nuclear pharmacist actually does. These tours have surely in-spired several students to consider nuclear pharmacy as a potential career path after graduation. ! The annual FSHP Abbreviations Bowl also took place during the month of February. The competition involved abbreviations from several different aspects of the medical field including: Patient Exam,

Cardiovascular, Disease, Sig Codes, Drugs, and Physiology. There were ten students that competed, and it turned out to be a very close competition. In the end, however, Kristy Marie Sowerby held out for the win with Andre McMahon and Ben Mitrano coming in a close second and third, respectively. ! The month was not all work though; we also set aside a little time to relax with our Movie Night, featuring The Social Network. It was a fun time for all who came and enjoyed the pizza and pop-corn. If you would like to keep up to date with FSHP, find us on facebook “FSHP Student Chapter - UF College of Pharmacy (St. Petersburg)”.

# The past month has been a wild roller coaster filled with exams, projects, and extracurricular activities. I am sure many of us are looking forward to spring break, which is really the calm before the storm, as March madness approaches. Everything is starting to pick up with Relay for Life just around the corner (April 15th-16th). The team has reached 93% of our $1,500 goal and is the top team in the area. Our goal is very much do-able; therefore, SNPhA is considering increasing the goal since there is still an

ample amount of time left to collect money. It would be a great way to challenge ourselves. On a side note, the top 3 fundraising members are rewarded with prizes! Those who went to the Halftime Rally at Gator’s Café did not come back empty handed. Just about everyone who went won cool prizes and left with a satiated stomach. SNPhA Gators BITE Back! was represented well and had exactly 11 members show up, which put us in the drawing to win a cooler. We are now proud new owners of a cooler which will be put to good use during Relay for Life. There is still time to join the team and to aid in such an amazing cause while having fun doing so. The Relay community is looking for help in running the activities and entertainment throughout the night. It would be a great opportunity for SNPhA to participate and to represent our school in the community. If anyone wants to boost their leadership skills and take on the challenge, please ask Danielle about how to do so!! Our social for the month was dining at Deeya’s Indian Cuisine. There was an array of exotic cuisines ranging from vegetarian dishes, curry, Tandoor oven roasted dishes, and even Indian beverages. The food was tasty with a kick of zing and spice. Afterwards, a brave few who could stomach more had ice cream for dessert at a little shop next door. ! Other events this month included a beach cleanup on March 4th at Sunset beach. The weather was beautiful and it proved to be an easy way to earn community service hours. Cultural events for March are still in the works and there may be some interest in celebrating St. Patrick ’s Day. Pho tasting is the anticipated April cultural event. For

those of you who have never tried pho, this is your chance and you definitely don’t want to miss out. SNPhA is also excited to announce the rescheduled Habitat for Humanity event for April 2nd from 8-2:30. We hope that this time more people will be committed to going. The Treasure Island Fun Center has also been brought up at meetings and if time is available, it could make for an enjoyable social to wrap up the semester.! The SNPhA U.F. PhARMacY Shirt Fundraiser was a great success! We made over

$300.00 in profit! There are a handful of sizes (S, L, XL, XXL) left. Please contact Amanda Tse ([email protected]) to reserve yours today. The shirts are army themed; representing the University of Florida College of Pharmacy student body collectively as the “U.F. ARMY” while paying homage to our beloved U.S. Army soldiers. Two of our SNPhA PhARMacY shirts were mailed to a soldier currently on duty in Iraq. The soldier is a Gator fanatic surrounded by Nole supporters! He expressed warm thanks and gratitude to the SNPhA organization for supplying the shirts. GO GATORS!

SPORTS CLUB: THE NUMEROUS BENEFITS OF MEMBERSHIP[Continued from page 1]1. You have not used of any of your years of eligibility

under the NCAA D1 football eligibility guidelines. I checked. You are all still able to play for the Florida Gators. I think I even noticed some scouts at one of our recent games. They looked particularly interested in one Jon Altieri and one Michael Brito.

2. Nobody cares how bad you are. This may very well be the number one contributing factor to non-adherence to sports club. “It’s been so long.” “I’m so out of shape.” “I’m not very good.” I’m fairly certain our own Danielle Honein had never seen a game of football, but was one of the star players in the Powder Puff Showdown. You will be impressed with the overall lack of talent on the field. You have nothing to fear but missing out on the fun!

3. Precious Memories. Nobody is going to remember your horrendously stupid answer in Therapy last week. Nobody knows, or cares, how badly you failed that last PBD exam. But I will remember that Deryk Loiacono, Andre McMahon, and Tarek Fawaz hit inside the park home runs in the first ever Sports Club Softball Game. Jenny Corder caught a rocket hit by Jeff Consaul with only her collarbone! And of course, who can forget the epic Flag Football Showdown. Which reminds me…

4. You need practice! The Class of 2013 is the reigning champion of the Flag Football Showdown. Every day brings us closer to the next Showdown. Every time you skip sports club, your opponent gets stronger. Playing as a cohesive unit is the key to winning. This can only be learned at sports club.

5. It probably has some health benefits. I believe I recall hear-ing, and don’t quote me on this, that there are some health benefits associated with aerobic exercise, fresh air, moderate sun exposure, and the building of healthy, friendly relation-ships with your peers. Some studies have shown that it can have beneficial effects on your cardiovascular health, bone health, and mental health. Exercising may relieve stress. Weight-bearing exercises such as running can prevent osteoporosis. Cardiovascular exercise can lower LDL and raise HDL levels. As always, take it with a grain of salt.

This past month was quite a busy one for KE! We are the only organization on campus that held elections in the Spring, so we just inducted our new officers at our last meeting. It seems as though we have a very enthusiastic new group of students willing to put in

the time and effort to make KE outstanding. I would also like to wish all of our 3PDs luck on rotations; it won’t be the same without you all! On that same note, I would also like to welcome back our 4PDs and congratulate them on completing their rotations. We look forward to seeing you all at our remaining meetings. We said our goodbyes to our 3rd year sisters and brothers at our 3PD

Farewell Celebration at Cha Cha Coconuts at the St. Petersburg Pier. We had beautiful weather, delicious food, and handed out superlatives for the outgoing class. A big thanks to our new social chairs, Rachel Cullimore and Jessica Maltz, for setting the whole thing up, great job ladies, it was quite the success!! I have big things planned for our fraternity including more of a focus on fundraising for our main philan-thropy, breast cancer. Our fundraising committee is hard at work coming up with ideas for school spirited memo-rabilia that you won’t want to miss out on, so keep an eye out!

KAPPA EPSILON: CELEBRATING CHANGE

Michael GeiselCPFI President! I don’t know about all of you, but this semester has really been tough. Between the many tests, quizzes, therapy sessions, cases, practicum, and ICS, I don’t know how we find time to do anything but school work. One

thing that I think would help everyone with their studies is to come out to the next CPFI meeting! We had a really good time at our last meeting at the Xtreme Fun Center for a night of laser tag and games. We still had a generally small attendance with only four of our fellow pharmers showing up (Michael Geisel, Andre McMahon, Tarek Fawaz, and THE Hieu Pham), but that did not stop us from dominating the laser tag arena that night. The majority of the games we played were won by our very own sports club president Andre McMahon. All of those hours that I have seen him playing call of duty really showed themselves that night.

! For those of you who wanted to come out but couldn’t, don’t worry because we will be doing this again in the future. Stay tuned and check your email for information about the next CPFI meeting. I hope to see you all there! Good luck studying and make sure to use plenty of sunscreen during spring break.

! APhA-ASP has had a very busy month as we got back into the swing of things this semester! During the month of February we had 2 guest speakers, Dr. Price and Dr. Colon-Moreno from the Morton Plant Hospital system. Dr. Price is a clinical pharmacist and serves as Morton Plant’s Residency Director. She shared her useful insight on the residency process of their program. Dr. Colon-Moreno, a cardiac critical care pharmacist, shared some of the exciting things that she does on the cardiac unit at Morton Plant. In addition, Dr. Colon-Moreno was a member of the St. Petersburg inaugural class and through our discussions we realized how much our campus has truly grown. This presentation was very insightful and a great kickoff into American Heart month!! Also in February, ASP held a screening at the Seminole Public Library where we screened over 80 people for blood pressure and educated on diabetes awareness. In addition, we were invited back to the Seminole Mall First Friday screening where we performed blood glucose testing, blood pressure screenings and had a heartburn awareness game that the members of the monthly walking club enjoyed! ASP members also participated in the JDRF Walk at Ft. DeSoto Beach during spring break! This was the first year we participated and we look forward to having a continued success in upcoming years. ! Legislative Days is right around the corner and we were given the opportunity to hold a training session

for the annual FPA Health Fair at the Capitol. FPA Public Affairs Committee member, Dr. Angela Garcia, brought all of the screening equipment to St. Pete for a training session. Students engaged in an afternoon of learning how to check BMI, cholesterol, bone density and also learned how to interpret the DermaView machine. We really appreciate Dr. Garcia making the trip and we are

all excited to participate in the health fair on March 16th! ! We have new and exciting events planned for the second half of the semester, including Poison Prevention and Generation Rx. With Legislative Days taking place March 15th-16th and the APhA Annual Meeting in Seattle March 25th-28th, March promises to be a very exciting month for us!

Newly Inducted Rho Chi Members! Congrats to the newly inducted members of Rho Chi! Their abilities will be put to good use through Rho Chi’s tutoring initiative. Be sure to utilize them!

Dear Mr. E,This is my first semester of Pharmacotherapy and I’ve been having a problem projecting my voice in class. It seems that none of the professors can hear me loud enough when I talk and I don’t want this to affect my grades. Its becoming a huge problem. Help?-Hardly Projecting

Dear Hardly:Here are a few easy options available to help with your problem:1. Buy a megaphone. Amazon has deals on them this week2. Request someone to talk for you (like a translator).3. Write the answers down on paper and have the professor read it (I’m sure they’ll go for it).

4. Hire Mariah Carey to train your vocals. You’ll be belting out answers in no time!-Mr. E

Dear Mr. E,What sign are you? I am a Capricorn but I hardly believe in Astrology.-Bear Bryant

Dear Bear:I’d say that I’m a Wendy’s sign. Not the big one with the name, but the smaller one on the bottom that announces all of the daily and weekly specials. Oh and BTW, crispier fries are now available.-Mr. E

! Whats going on St. Pete Campus? By the time you all read this, we will all be nice and rested from spring break and hopefully many of us will be at Legislative Days. On the list for people going to Legislative Days that was sent out via email, I noticed that a good chunk of student attendees are coming from the St. Petersburg Campus. Hopefully, our representation there will help to spark a flame that will continue to advance our profes-sion. Also, our beloved 3PD class has been sent off on rotations. I’d like to thank them for all of their service to our campus, as many of them were leaders in our student organizations. Good luck out there guys and I can’t wait to be in your shoes one year from now. With the 3PD’s departure, I would like to welcome back all the 4PD’s to our campus. Many of you I haven’t seen in over a year and it will be good to see some old faces around campus and at organization meetings. ! Lastly, congratulations to Allie Capristo, who was named as our COP Ball Chairperson at our most recent Student Council Meeting. With her taking the lead, I’ll expect nothing less than a great night to come next year. If anybody is interested, we are looking for committee members to help her out. We are also looking for people to help out with the fair next year. Once again, do not hesitate to contact me if anyone is interested.
