Growing in Grace The Holy Family: Prepare the Way
Prayer for the Week: O Mary conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!
The Immaculate Conception “For nothing is impossible with God” ~Luke 1:37
Often, the Immaculate Conception is misunderstood as a reference to the Incarnation of Jesus, when in fact, it is a reference to the concep-tion of Mary, His mother. God’s act of grace preserved Mary from sin at the moment of conception. In other words, she was immaculately conceived. Mary, in view of the future merits of her son Jesus, was given sanctifying grace before sin could take effect in her soul.
“To become the mother of the Savior, Mary ‘was enriched by God with gifts appropriate to such a role.’ The angel Gabriel at the moment of the Annunciation salutes her as ‘full of grace’. In fact, in order for Mary to be able to give the free assent of her faith to the announcement of her vocation, it was necessary that she be wholly borne by God's grace” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, #490).
The Feast of the Immaculate Conception is celebrated on December 8
and is normally a Holy Day of Obligation. This year, since it falls on the 2nd Sunday of Advent, the Feast is transferred to Monday, December 9, but the Holy Day of Obligation is not transferred. This means that we celebrate the Feast on December 9, but we’re not obligated to attend Mass (though it’s a wonderful thing to do!).
Ways to Honor the Immaculate Conception · Attend Mass: Offered at St. Philip’s on Monday, December 9, at
12:15 PM · In your home, use a light blue or “Mary Blue” tablecloth for the day · Purchase prayer cards of the Immaculate Conception and give to
your family members · Teach your children how to recite the Angelic Salutation (the Hail
Mary) · Light a candle. Many grocery stores have Holy Candles with an im-
age of the Immaculate Conception · Pray the Angelus at one or all of the customary times: 6 am, 12
noon, and 6 pm · Spend some time in Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament, thanking
God for Mary · Pray the Rosary · Learn the Magnificat Prayer by heart

Many senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests served for little or no pay. Today, religious communities often do not have enough savings to meet retirement needs.
