A Message From Our Pastor

Father’s Formed.org Suggestion of the Week PROGRAMS – FAITH FORMATION

Into the Breach

What is your altar? The altar, for our spiritual life, is the central focus during the celebration of the Mass. We are called to the altar of the Lord to memorialize Christ’s actions at the Last Supper from which we receive the life source and summit of the Christian life. There is no higher altar on which we can offer glory to God. After receiving life in Christ through the Eucharist, we are sent into the world to bring Christ everywhere we go and to all we meet. Paul speaks of this call for Christians in Chapter 5 of his letter to the Romans: “Through (Jesus) we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith for the sake of his name among all the nations.” Faithful living requires our full attention, and having God as our focus every moment of every day. Faith must direct our decisions else deception can sneak into our lives causing confusion and loss of focus. In the fog of deception, we wonder away from God without noticing and still believe we are with him. Sadly, the world has been greatly deceived in many ways. Following the world view down this road will bring us further from God and deeper into the fog. In the areas of our life that we have allowed the fog of decep-tion to direct our attention away from the altar of the Lord we “worship” at an alter—an “other”. Be it work, leisure, extracurricular activities, even family, or any-thing other than God, we allow these things to cloud our focus on God and we lose our way. What’s more, is that we bring our children, relatives and friends with us and thus are the cause of others’ deceptive life. A strong prayer life, trust in God, and His gift of Holy Mother Church, are important to have in our lives. Hav-ing God as the focus of everyday keeps His light on the path of Truth and dispels the fog of deception.

Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Turn to the Lord for mercy; to our God who is generous in forgiving. -Isaiah 55:7b

Page 3: SAINT PHILIP THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH · 20/09/2020  · SAINT PHILIP THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH FOUNDED 1909 DIOCESE OF VICTORIA IN TEXAS 304 W. Church St., El Campo, Tx. 77437

Key Scriptural Passage: The landowner said “Take what belong to you and go; I choose to give this last the same as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?” (Matthew 20:14-15)

Questions for Discussion:

Adult: Which has deepened your faith more-being treated justly or being treated with love and care? Who needs you to treat them with care this week? Child: Think of a time when you were very fair , then think of a time when you were very generous. Which felt better?

SEPTEMBER 24: A DAY OF PRAYER AND FASTING

Bishop Brendan Cahill invites everyone in the Diocese of Victoria to join him and others across the nation for a National Day of Prayer and Fasting on Thursday, Sept. 24. According to Bishop Robert E. Barron, chairman of the Com-mittee for Evangelization and Catechesis for the USCCB, the initiative was inspired by the need for societal healing and springs partly from the fact that Abraham Lincoln, on three occasions called the nation to pray and fast for God's mercy on our land. FIRST READING - Ezekiel 18:25-28 Thus says the LORD: You say, "The LORD's way is not fair!"

Hear now, house of Israel: Is it my way that is unfair, or rather, are not your ways unfair? When someone virtuous turns away

from virtue to commit iniquity, and dies, it is because of the in-iquity he committed that he must die. But if he turns from the wickedness he has committed, he does what is right and just,

he shall preserve his life; since he has turned away from all the sins that he has committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

SECOND READING - Philippians 2:1-11 Brothers and sisters: If there is any encouragement in Christ, any solace in love, any participation in the Spirit, any compas-sion and mercy, complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing. Do noth-ing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also for those of others. Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus, Who, though he was in the form of God, did not regard equality with God something to be grasped. Rather, he emptied himself, taking the

form of a slave, coming in human likeness; and found human in appearance, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Because of this, God greatly exalted him and bestowed on him the name which is above eve-ry name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bend, of those in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

GOSPEL - Matthew 2:28-32 Jesus said to the chief priests and elders of the people: "What is your opinion? A man had two sons. He came to the first and said, 'Son, go out and work in the vineyard today.' He said in reply, 'I will not, ' but afterwards changed his mind and went. The man came to the other son and gave the same order. He said in reply, 'Yes, sir, ‘but did not go. Which of the two did his fa-ther's will?" They answered, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Amen, I say to you, tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God before you. When John came to you in the way of righteousness, you did not believe him; but tax collectors and prostitutes did. Yet even when you saw that, you did not later change your minds and believe him."

The retreat will be held at the Spiritual Renewal Center in Victoria, TX on October 2-4, 2020. The cost for the retreat is $275.00 per couple, which includes lodging, food, and mate-rials. Financial assistance is available for those in need. Ap-plications can be downloaded from the church website at www.victoriadiocese.org/choosingtolove News from the Cemetery Committee of Holy Cross Me-morial Park Cemetery… Please remember that only one flower arrangement and only one perpetual or religious light is permitted per grave space. We ask that you please pick up your flowers off the graves beginning Sept 21. All graves will be cleaned and anything in violation will not be saved. Please do not add any new flowers until after October 15, in order that we may prepare the cemetery for All Souls Day. Thank you for your cooperation in assisting with the upkeep of the cemetery.
