A Message From Our Pastor BOOKS – BEING CATHOLIC

Come, Lord Jesus: Meditations on the Art of Waiting by Mother Mary Francis

We are in a time of great uncertainty in dealing with the recent scandals in the Church (and even remnants of past scandals), Coronavirus pandemic, and election pro-cess doubts among things such as the ongoing deteriora-tion of societal belief in Truth. One can be resigned in despair to give up the good, and allow societal norms to win. We CANNOT ever give up! We must always trust that the Lord will prevail. Jesus declared, “…upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the nether-world shall not prevail against it.” Christ, himself, was in a position where giving up in despair seemed possible and to his detractors probable. Yet all the way through his passion and crucifixion he gave over to the Father entrusting himself to God through it all. He now sits at the right hand of power and will come again to judge the living and the dead. Look-ing upon Christ the King we are reminded of the true essence of power, a power that does not come from hu-manity or the world, but from Truth and Love. Christ conquered death by Truth in Love and reigns by the very same Truth in the very same Love. We need only to believe in his Truth and trust in his Love. He will conquer anything and everything for us as he did death. Belief and trust in the power of Christ as our king can take all the human strength contained with-in us. Giving over to Christ, we find true freedom no matter how deep the worldly uncertainty is we are facing. He is our king and will deliver us.

Christ the King Sunday...What does it mean to say Christ is King? Do we give him our Sundays only, or the

whole week? Set aside 10 minutes for God. Offer him the events of your day and say “Your will be done.” “No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and the world.” (Luke 16:13)

Page 3: SAINT PHILIP THE APOSTLE CATHOLIC CHURCH · 22/11/2020  · 304 W. Church St., El Campo, Tx. 77437 979-543-3770 • fax: 979-578-8831 Parish School: 979-543-2901 • fax: 979-578-8835

Key Scriptural Passage: The Son of Man will answer them, “Truly I tell you, just as as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to me.” (Matthew 25:45)

Questions for Discussion: Adult: If you were to be judged today by God, what would be your greatest regret? What is one thing you could do to change that? Child: To which person did you especially try to show Jesus’ love and care?

For The Week (Nov 23–Nov 28) Monday…………. Rom 10:9-18/Mt 4:18-22 Tuesday…………. Rv 14:14-19/Lk 21:5-11 Wednesday……… Rv 15:1-4/Lk 21:12-19 Thursday…………Cor 9:16-19,22-23/Mk 16:15-20 Friday…………….Rv 20:1-4,11-21:2/Lk 21:29-33 Saturday………….Rv 22:1-7/Lk 21:34-36 El Campo Community-Wide Thanksgiving Dinner… Our mayor, city council, area businesses and churches invite you to join in the city-wide Thanksgiving Day Din-ner. Because of Covid-19 it will be a drive through plates to go only event. Those who are interested in donating desserts may drop them off at the front door of the Civic Center at 9:30 a.m. If you have questions or contributions call 979-332-9260.

Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King… Jesus is paradoxically an anointed king and a humble

shepherd. In a world where one nation enslaves the other, Jesus frees us from domination and subjugation. He is a king like no other. When earthly powers fail, Jesus leads us, guides us, feeds us, refreshes us, and anoints us with loving care. Christ reigns from his resurrection to his final coming in glory. At the end of time, he will hand over all power to God the Father. The last enemy to be destroyed is death. The ones who share eternal life with Jesus are not neces-sarily the powerful people of the earth but those who do his will. Jesus’ commands are not difficult to carry out. He simply asks us to see him in the poor, the suffering, and the oppressed. As faithful followers of Jesus, we imitate his example of servant-king when we help to bring about the kingdom of love, justice and peace.

REMEMBER IN PRAYER

Those Going Home To God.. Dora Casarez

“Life has changed, not ended”

FIRST READING - You, LORD, are our father, our redeemer you are named forev-er. Why do you let us wander, O LORD, from your ways, and harden our hearts so that we fear you not? Return for the sake of your servants, the tribes of your heritage. Oh, that you would rend the heavens and come down, with the mountains quaking before you, while you wrought awesome deeds we could not hope for, such as they had not heard of from of old. No ear has ever heard, no eye ever seen, any God but you doing such deeds for those who wait for him. Would that you might meet us doing right, that we were mindful of you in our ways! Behold, you are angry, and we are sinful; all of us have become like unclean people, all our good deeds are like polluted rags; we have all withered like leaves, and our guilt carries us away like the wind. There is none who calls upon your name, who rouses himself to cling to you; for you have hidden your face from us and have delivered us up to our guilt. Yet, O LORD, you are our fa-ther; we are the clay and you the potter: we are all the work of your hands.

SECOND READING - Brothers and sisters: Grace to you and peace from God our Fa-ther and the Lord Jesus Christ. I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way, with all dis-course and all knowledge, as the testimony to Christ was con-firmed among you, so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ. He will keep you firm to the end, irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

GOSPEL - Jesus said to his disciples: “Be watchful! Be alert! You do not know when the time will come. It is like a man traveling abroad. He leaves home and places his servants in charge, each with his own work, and orders the gatekeeper to be on the watch. Watch, therefore; you do not know when the Lord of the house is coming, whether in the evening, or at midnight, or at cock-crow, or in the morning. May he not come suddenly and find you sleeping. What I say to you, I say to all: ‘Watch!’”

A Prayer for Protection against Fires...

ALMIGHTY and eternal God, we ask Your protection against destroying fire. Fire is so very necessary for our existence, and yet, when it gets out of control, it can be more damaging than anything else. Keep our homes and buildings and woods and fields safe from this scourge. Help us always to be most careful in our use of it. Help us especially in the winter time when need and use it most. For then, if our homes are destroyed by fire, we suffer more than ever. Give us, too, we humbly pray You, a saving fear of the fires of passion, and the help of Your grace to control them. Help us also to fear the fires of hell, that we may always keep away from serious sin, and live lives of goodness and virtue, through Christ our Lord. Amen. From the "Rural Life Prayer Book"

Origins and Expressions of Thanksgiving

And be thankful… Colossians 3:15

For Christians, every Sunday is Thanksgiving Day, for the term Eucharist comes from a Greek word which means “thanksgiving.” The American Catholic Lection-ary includes an appendix with readings for Thanksgiv-ing Mass. Perhaps it is fitting that Thanksgiving is not a mandatory feast, for gratitude is best served by volun-tary expressions like the ones suggested below. Give from your table: Numerous agencies, par ishes, and food banks offer opportunities to feed the hungry at Thanksgiving. Give what you are able to support those efforts—St. Vincent DePaul Society and Blessing Cup. Count your blessings: The Thanksgiving newspaper comes stuffed with Black Friday ads. Instead of starting your “wish lists” or shopping, make a family “thanks list” and read it aloud. Celebrate the Eucharist: Most par ishes have one morning Mass on Thanksgiving Day. The Eucharist is a graceful way to begin the day focused on God’s bless-ing in praise and thanks.

Help Us Share Your Love… We give thanks, loving God, for all the ways and times you comforted us during duress, healed us from pain, and led us to new life. Move our hearts to bring your love, compassion, and healing to others. Where we find suffering, may we bring comfort. When face to face with the poor, may we bring support. In encounters with the dying, may we bring hope and peace. When we meet one who has been cast out, may we offer welcome. Grant us the courage to live life to the fullest and to invite all that into fullness. Amen.
