A Message From Our Parochial Vicar
Exactly three years ago when I heard the sound of my phone ringing, it was such a beautiful afternoon when I noticed it was a call from Bishop Cahill who among the numerous conversa-tions we had, then asked me if I was willing to be assigned to St. Philip’s. How hurriedly I responded YES made him ask again why I gave him a quick response ....YES. But my expla-nation to the swift yes was because I had been there before as a Seminarian. That in itself made him feel that I knew the envi-ronment of the place and the people. I was happily ready to come and continue with my ministry here because I LOVE St. Philip’s and the people. I feel loved and cherished here. I’m very much honored to EVERYONE of you to allow me to serve you as your Parochial Vicar with Fr. Michael. It was a wonderful time for me to help build the Kingdom of God here in St. Philip’s together with you. Over the years I’m blessed to have beautiful people in my life and I’m grateful to serve you. As we celebrate the 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Jesus mentions that Whoever does not take up his cross is not worthy of Him and went on to say to his Apostles that whoever re-ceives them receives Jesus himself. What a coincidence that this Gospel passage fits in here in the lives of St. Philip’s Cath-olic Community in El Campo. You faithfully and lovingly re-ceived me from the very first day I began my ministry here. As I render my sincerest appreciation to all of you, I also want to say thank you to my Pastor, Very Rev. Fr. Michael Rother for his love and support for me all these years. We worked togeth-er beautifully from our hearts and I’m very grateful to him. No-body is perfect and we strive in our daily Christian Journey to be perfect as Christ and therefore I like to also use this platform to ask for your forgiveness if I offended any of you and I ask for your forgiveness. I love St. Philip’s, YES I do love St. Philip’s, I truly do from the bottom of my heart. You have shaped my Priesthood. It’s hard to leave you but I will always remember you in my prayers. Please pray for me as well in my new Pastoral Ministry. My wish is that as Jesus left his friends for His Heavenly Fa-ther, his last words were LOVE ONE ANOTHER AS I HAVE LOVED YOU. Questions for Discussion: Adult: When have you felt more fully alive by giving of yourself to another? Child: When have your been able to put what someone else needs ahead of want you want for yourself?
There is no greater in-justice in the world today than the shedding of the innocent blood of unborn children. We will never be able to build a culture of life if we do not respect the dignity of the human person at all stages of life. We must build our society as it once was, founded upon respect for life and the right to life and the pursuit of happiness.
From Scripture...Matthew 10:37-42, Discipleship: challenging but rewarding. In this Gospel passage, Jesus outlines the demands of disci-pleship in stark terms. First, there’s the question of priorities. For the early Christians, it was illegal to be Christian and the penalty was prison, or worse. To be a follower of Jesus literally meant risking everything. Since he is God, only his is worthy to have first claim on our hearts and lives. Being a faithful Catholic today has it challenges too. Much of what Christ and the Church ask of us goes against much of what secular culture approves. Even without worldly tempta-tions, we have crosses to carry. Following Christ includes taking up our crosses-never alone, but always with him. The good news is that Jesus did what he did so we can do it too. He passed through death to eternal life, from suffering to glory, from sorrow to joy. We will too, if we stay close to him. Each day, with his grace, we can choose to keep his command-ments and remain in his love. In Heaven, we’ll see clearly that it was all worth it.

FIRST READING - Zechariah 9:9-10

SECOND READING - Romans 8:9, 11-13
Brothers and sisters: You are not in the flesh; on the contrary, you are in the spirit, if only the Spirit of God dwells in you. Whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. If the Spirit of the one who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, the one who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also, through his Spirit that dwells in you. Consequently, brothers and sisters, we are not
debtors to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
GOSPEL - Matthew 11:25-30
At that time Jesus exclaimed: “I give praise to you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, for although you have hidden these things from the wise and the learned you have revealed them to little ones. Yes, Father, such has been your gracious will. All things have been handed over to me by my Father. No one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son wishes to reveal him.” “Come to me, all you who labor and are bur-dened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart; and you will find rest for yourselves. For my yoke is easy, and my burden light.”

The Gospel of Matthew The first gospel starts with “ a genealogy
of Jesus Christ, son of David, son of Abra-
ham.” With this opening the evangelist pre-
pares us for this Jesus who will be the fulfill-
ment of major figures of the Hebrew scrip-
tures.
Archeologists and textual experts usually
date the writing of the Gospel of Matthew to
around 80 CE. One piece of evidence for the
dating of this gospel is that is contains nearly
all of the Gospel of Mark. From this we
know that it was composed after 70 CE (near
the time when Mark was written). In addition
to having Mark as a source, the Gospel of
Matthew shares a large chunk of material
with Luke, material that appears neither in
Mark or in John. From this we assume that
there was another source for Matthew, one
that he and the writer of Luke used. Matthew
also had his own information about Jesus that
the other evangelists did not.
The Gospel of Matthew is unique in its
five-part structure: after the introduction
(which contains the stories of the annuncia-
tion to Joseph (not Mary, as in Luke) of
Jesus’ birth, his birth and manifestation to the
magi (not shepherds, as in Luke), each part
contains a long speech by Jesus followed by
actions that Jesus performs. Part one is the
Sermon on the Mount (chapters 5-7); part two
prepares the disciples for their missionary
journeys (10); part three is filled with para-
bles (13); part four deals with church order
(18); and the fifth part concerns the end of the
world (24-25). Scholars assume that the
evangelist adopted this structure from the
Pentateuch, the first five books of the Bible.
This is a big clue about the portrait of Jesus in
this gospel.
Many of the people in the church for which
the Gospel of Matthew was written were
Jews. One of the main purposes of this gos-
pel was to provide consolation to those who
wrestled with the compatibility of the Jewish
heritage and their faith in Jesus. For this rea-
son, we find references to patriarchs of an-
cient Israel from the very first verse. A gene-
alogy filled with Jewish ancestors begins the
text, and the evangelist fills the narrative with
quotations from the Hebrew scriptures. All
of this seems to reassure the hearers that
Jesus of Nazareth was indeed the Messiah an-
ticipated in the older faith.
The Gospel of Matthew is proclaimed
throughout Year A, in the years 1999,2002,
2005, 2008 and so on.
In art, the evangelist Matthew is portrayed
with an angel by his side. The feast of St.
Matthew is September 21.
