W e may all need to take a moment this coming week to reflect on our understanding of faith and the choice we make to live that faith in a
true culture of religious freedom. Faith does offer the easy way out. One’s faith is not in any way synonymous with miracles, although in these we see God’s divine in-tervention in human conditions to make humans whole. It is not a case of the “deeper the faith, the quicker the miracle.” Rather, it is more the “deeper the faith, the stronger the will to bear the circumstances to carry on.” Faith reassures us that we are not alone in our crisis. When we face difficulty, our greatest wish is not only how to be delivered from our condition, but also to be assured of the support of a trusted loved one: God. Faith, there-fore, is the total submission to the will of God. Much of this is beyond our hu-man understanding, but it is what faith is all about: accepting what we cannot understand, and hoping to be transformed by it.
In the Book of Hebrews, St. Paul gives us a classical definition of faith: “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and evidence of things not seen” (Heb 11:1). St. Thomas Aquinas recapitulates Paul’s statement by saying, “Faith is a habit of the mind whereby the intellect assents to what is non-apparent.” If faith is a habit, it must be active and proactive in our human life. That activity must be consistent with our inalienable right to freedom of association, free-dom to worship, and freedom to live our religious faith. Every human being has a natural inclination, an intellectual capacity, and felt need to seek the truth and to know and worship God in Whose image and likeness humans are created.
The Catholic Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church emphasizes that in order that this freedom, willed by God and inscribed in human nature, may be exercised, no obstacle should be placed in its way. The reason is simply that truth cannot be imposed except by virtue of its own truth.
More than ever today we need to pray for religious liberty, freedom of con-science, and the right to worship God without any external or internal interfer-ence from any political or social power or religio-political power. We pray that people will endear themselves to this inalienable right to religious freedom and devoutly practice their faith and religion in truth and in spirit. In addition, we cannot renege on our proactive actions against states, groups, and societies that hold ideological stances against other religions, especially Christianity. It should be a common good and mission to speak against the perpetration of evil and persecution against any religion. It is heartbreaking to consider that since Amnesty International issued a report in 2007 that Christians are being perse-cuted in an unprecedented 149 nations of the world, nothing has changed. It is increasingly becoming worse in Communist and Islamic countries. Worst of all is the subtle invasion of our inalienable rights by the so-called coalition for Freedom From Religion. Let us intensely pray every day that all people may enjoy this right and freedom of religion. SHALOM!
This week’s reflection is by Msgr. Francis, Parochial Vicar:

WEEKLY CALENDAR July 1-8, 2018
“Is Any Among You Sick?”
Anointing of the Sick will be given this Friday, July 6, during 9 AM Mass. The sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is for any-one suffering from a grave illness, experiencing frailty due to old age, or about to undergo surgery. If you are facing any of these conditions, don’t be afraid to receive Anointing of the Sick.
This special sacrament was given by Christ to pro-vide the grace and strength needed by those who are suffering, uniting them to His own Passion. Anointing of the Sick prepares us to pass into the hands of God, whether it is His will to call us now, or at another time.
St. Philip’s offers Anointing of the Sick during the 9 AM Mass on the first Friday of every month, and also at any weekend Mass, on request. If your ill-ness prevents you from coming to the church, call the Parish Office at 972-436-9581 to request a visit from one of the priests.
Happy Independence Day!
Pray for our Nation this July 4th as you celebrate with family and friends! Please note some schedule changes for Wednesday, July 4: · The Parish Office will be closed. · The Patriotic Rosary will be prayed at 8:15 AM · Daily Mass is moved to 9 AM (there will be no
Mass at 6:30 PM). · Wednesday Confessions and Holy Hour are both
cancelled on July 4.

Getting beyond “Are we there yet?” Summer usually means more free time, so use this time to have conversations with your children about a strong spir-itual life. As parents, you are responsi-ble for the material well-being of your children, yet we know our children are spiritual beings as well. Here are some conversation starters great for time in the car while traveling or just to the grocery store:
· Explain to your child why you gave him/her the name you did. In the Bible, names carry a lot of meaning. Jesus changed Simon’s name to Peter, Greek for “rock”, which indicated Peter’s vocation as the leader of the Christian community. By telling your child how you chose his or her name, you can highlight the spiritual hopes you have for your child and emphasize his or her connection to the larg-er community.
· Tell stories about your ancestors. Explain, for example, how their grandparents or great-great grandparents came to this country if they are of immigrant heritage. Such stories of the strength, perse-verance, and faith of their family will help them know they are a part of a larger, grander story than just their own.
Get ready to learn the Faith this Fall: enroll in Formation Online enrollment for all grades in elementary formation (PS-5th), SPY MS (6th-8th) and SPY HS (9th-12th) is open. Please enroll early for el-ementary as classes fill up quickly. Enrollment is open until August 13 and then will close until after classes begin in September.

Little Apostles Preschool: Lead and Assistant Teachers Needed Little Apostles Preschool is growing. We are looking for experienced Catholic lead/assistant teachers. You can make a difference in a child's life in a faith-nurturing, creative, educational environment. To apply for this part-time position, please send your résumé to [email protected].
Where are we going? Time in the car is a chance to talk about our journey of faith.

RECEIVING THE HOLY EUCHARIST The Eucharist may be received more than once, and so there are different levels of preparation:
Any baptized Catholic who has reached the age of reason may prepare to receive the Holy Eucharist. Our staff are ready to help you:
Children Age 7 through 8th Grade Contact Kim Carr at 972-219-1511 or [email protected]. Preparation for the Holy Eucharist is begun once a child has spent at least two years learning the Catholic Faith through for-mation classes. If a child is at the correct age to make their First Holy Communion but has not received this basic education, additional prepara-tion will be necessary.
Adults Contact Matt Gill at 972-219-1686 or [email protected].
Catholics who have made their First Communion may receive the Holy Eucharist anytime, up to two times per day. Daily Mass and Communion are encouraged!
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR COMMUNION?
1. Examine your conscience: a person who is conscious of grave sin must not receive Com-munion, but must first go to Confession and re-ceive absolution for the sin.
2. Fast from food and drink (with the excep-tion of water and medicine) for at least an hour before Communion.
Additional preparation for Holy Communion:
· Pray along at Mass: give it your full attention! · Make regular sacramental confessions. · Cultivate a relationship with Our Lord through
regular prayer and Eucharistic Adoration.
First Holy Communion
RECEIVING THE EUCHARIST FAQ Do I have an obligation to receive the Holy Eucharist? Once a person has been initiated into the Holy Eucharist, they are obliged to receive it at least once a year during the Easter Season (cf. Code of Canon Law, 920).
Do I need to receive under both species (bread and wine)? Our Lord is completely present in each of the Eucharistic species of bread and wine, and it is not absolutely necessary to receive both. Whether you take only the Host, or only the cup, or both, you receive the entire Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ.
Can my non-Catholic family and friends receive Communion? Holy Communion is not a symbol of uni-ty, it really IS our bond of unity, the One Body of Christ. We cannot offer it to those who are separated from the Church and do not believe that what they receive is truly the Body of Christ: “For any one who eats and drinks with-out discerning the body eats and drinks judgment upon himself” (1 Cor 11:29). In addition, we as Catholics may not participate in “communion services” at non-Catholic churches.
