My WWE event of the summer, SummerSlam, is happening. To me, it marks the beginning of the end of summer. In 1999, SummerSlam was held in Target Center, and I, of course, with a buddy, went to it. I can remember it like it was yesterday. The main event was Triple H vs. Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Mankind (aka Cactus Jack, Dude Love, and Mick Foley). I am a big Stone Cold fan. He was the champion and I wanted him to retain the championship “and that’s the bottom line ‘cuz Stone Cold said so!” Jesse Ventura was governor at the time and he was going to be the special guest referee. I have a feeling the script had Triple H winning, I think the governor had other ideas, because Triple H had someone down for the count and Jesse refused to count. Eventually Mankind won, but lost it the next day to Triple H. Before the show, there were protesters outside. They were an animal rights group of some sorts mad at Jesse for whatever reason. I opened my big mouth and yelled “I love animals—they’re delicious!” The whole crowd waiting to get into Target Center cheered, prompting the leader of the animal rights group to give me a nasty look. Oh, what memories. The very next Sunday, I was moving into the seminary to start my path to priesthood. Back then, I was thinking to myself about where the summer went. It seems like time is moving faster the older I get; and today I am asking myself where the summer went. We just blessed the graduates and now we are preparing for another school year and another year of faith formation. I have not golfed as much as I wanted to. Now football season is near as I gear up for another season of fantasy football with my buddies. I am in only one league, but I would not mind joining another. I have been doing fantasy football for 25 years. But I am still looking back to what happened and where the summer went. But as I reflect, maybe I am looking in the wrong direction. While it may be pleasant once in a while to wax nostalgic, as a disciple of Jesus Christ, I need not wonder where the time went, but to focus on what is timeless and what is eternal. My WWE event of the summer, SummerSlam, is happening. To me, it marks the beginning of the end of

FROM FATHER COLE 3

As I was writing this article last Wednesday morning I received word that our 5th/6th grade teacher had resigned. I chose to delay having an article rather than disseminating potentially wrong information. We will be interviewing a promising candidate later this week and hope to have a permanent replacement in place prior to the start of our school year. Below is what would have ran in last weeks bulletin:

As we come to the final weeks of summer, children will be soon returning to school. When I greet families before and after Mass I often try to ask the younger kids if they are ready to get back to school and it makes me smile when I hear how excited they are to get back. Some times it is the moms and dads that are more excited as even though the school year can be quite busy, there is a familiar structure and tempo that brings us a comfort of normalcy. The same can be said for our own parish school after a couple of years of transition. I am grateful for the leadership and initiatives of Mike Strommen who will begin his first full academic year as our new Principal. Throughout the summer there have been a summary of this progress in the bulletin and I am excited to see the fruits of this work as our students return. As we begin the new year I want to give an update of where we are from my perspective. We continue to face the challenges that many rural Catholic schools face, specifically declining enrollment and increased costs. We are projecting our enrollment to be about 75 children in pre-k to 6th. For comparison, in 2011 we had about 138 children in pre-k through 5th. This is a huge decline in a short period of time at SJB as well as a tremendous decline in total enrollment over the last 10 years when our community saw the school in New Trier close in 2009 and Hampton in 2011. Demographics is perhaps the biggest factor as we face not only declining birth-rates but also a shrinking rural population. Last year, St. John’s educated children from 8 different Catholic parishes as well as 2 Protestant communities. This goes to show the reach of our rural Catholic school that did not exist even 5 years ago. I am thankful that SJB school is there for our families, but the truth, as history has shown, is that it is difficult if not impossible to go it alone in such a rural setting. As I have written in previous bulletin articles it is important that all parishes make Catholic

education available to their families. There is a subsidy of close to $3000 per child that St. John’s community absorbs regardless of what community the student comes from. In the past, it would be common to have two tuition rates, one for active and contributing parish families as well as a higher rate for non-parish families. It would have been pretty rare for a non-parish student to attend a different parish school because most parishes ran their own schools. To foster a spirit of unity in our rural communities this is not a route that I want to take, but it is clear that St. John’s can not shoulder the entire burden of operating a parish school. One of the options would be to form St. John’s as a regional parish school. This would obligate all parishes within a certain geographic boundary to support the school with a set percentage of parish revenue and each community would be on the hook to makeup any year end losses. The challenges of going this route are obvious and would be controversial. In lieu of this, I have asked the parishes that I am pastor of, all of which have students attending SJB school to voluntarily contribute to offset that parish subsidy for their students. This is the fair and right thing to do. I am thankful to St. Mathias and St. Mary’s for each making a contribution of $10k dollars for the 2016-2017 budget year as well as $5k from St. Mary’s and $10k from St. Mathias for the 2015-2016 budget years. The Finance Councils have chosen to designate a portion of the proceeds from the All Saints Music Festival to cover this. This is a beneficial source of funding as it allows $10k of each parishes proceeds to be free from Archdiocesan assessment as it goes directly to school support. It is my hope that parishes see the benefit of their contributions by ensuring access to a high quality Catholic education for their children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews, not only today, but well into the future. St. John’s School has the lowest tuition in Dakota County making our community school very affordable. We also do this without Archdiocesan support or proceeds from the annual Catholic Services Appeal. My prayer is that the school will be a force of unity within our communities as we ensure access in an underserved area. As always, I will be happy to discuss any specific questions or concerns that anyone may have as will Mr. Strommen. Peace, Fr. Cole
