SAINT PIUS V Cannon Falls SAINT JOSEPH Miesville SAINT MARY New Trier SAINT MATHIAS Hampton SAINT JOHN BAPTIST Vermillion 4TH SUNDAY OF LENT MARCH 15, 2015 the Genetically Superior A week ago Friday, folks found me hard to deal with when I related a report I heard on the radio stating that there are scientists that say redheads are genetically superior. So, I took great pleasure in crowing about that all that Friday, giving the people I work with a lot of nausea. It would even been better if it said redheads with brown eyes, which is a tremendous rarity. I hope everyone knows that I was just having a little fun with the whole thing with a faux arrogance. But I was curious what determined what was “superior”. So I went to the Google and came up with this headline: Why redheads have a head start in the health stakes”. The article went on to say: “scientists have found that ginger hair and a pale skin offer an important advantage in the survival game. Redheads, it would seem, boast a secret genetic weapon which enables them to fight off certain debilitating and potentially deadly illnesses more efficiently than blondes or brunettes. A pale complexion permits more sunlight into the skin, where it encourages the production of vitamin D. This helps to prevent rickets, a disease which progressively weakens bone structures, and the lung disease tuberculosis, which can be fatal. Professor Jonathan Rees, of the University of Edinburgh, speaking at a series of seminars on hair in London yesterday, said the ginger gene may have had a significance throughout history. Did their ginger hair, for instance, assist in the achievements of Napoleon, Cromwell and Columbus? What effect did it have on the exploits of General Custer, Florence Nightingale, Cleopatra, Nell Gwynne and Rob Roy? In reality we know little about the inheritance of these characteristics apart from the way red hair is inherited.” Of course, I found articles that would either contradict the genetic superiority or show some denigration to redheads. “Short temper and sexual fieriness are attributed to them. It is "common knowledge" that redheads have hot tempers, but no one has ever seen a controlled study that tested the correlation. So while some like to use that excuse, it probably isn't a valid one. In Poland, if you pass three red-heads you'll win the state lottery. Harvard dermatologist Madhu Pathak calls redheads ‘three-time losers’ because their red pigment is an inadequate filter of sunlight and their skin is more susceptible to sunburn, skin cancer and wrinkling with age. Superstitions: red hair is unlucky; it's lucky to rub your hand on a redhead's head; bees sting redheads more readily. The Egyptians regarded the color as so unlucky that they had a ceremony in which they burned red-headed maidens alive to wipe out the tint. Redheads have always been thought untrustworthy. As some claim –”Judas was red-haired. Let me make this perfectly clear: there is absolutely no evidence or testimony or any biblical indication of what color Judas’ hair was; living in the Middle East, it is highly unlikely he was a redhead. It is bad enough that Napoleon and Custer were redheads. What took the wind out of my sails was when after all my crowing about how genetically superior redheads are, someone tells me that she did not even think I am a redhead. Am I getting so old that I am losing my red locks that made even women jealous? I guess the point of all my fun with this and all my musings is that there is no such thing as being genetically superior. Sure, there are folks that have a few more gifts than others. But at the end of the day, we are all counted as ones who are fallen human beings prone to sin and error. We are all human beings that will one day taste death. Will we trust and hope in the one who is truly superior, bring us to perfection in union with Him?TB

FROM FATHER STAN 3

Pope Francis has designated 2015 (until February 2 of 2016) as the Year of Consecrated Life. Consecrated Life is a term that covers religious sisters and brothers, and some other groups of people who have dedicated their lives to the Lord and in service to the Church. The power of religious life is that a group of people with a common vision work together by pooling their talents, time and money to do more together than they could individually. By a simpler life style they are able to advance their mission or allow others in their community to work at no cost to those who need them but are unable to pay for them. Many colleges, hospitals, presses and other institutions have come about that way. We are privileged to have three sisters at St. John the Baptist in Vermillion. Two teach full time, another assists there and also directs Faith Formation for all three parishes and does some pastoral visiting. At the Mass with the school at St. John the Baptist in Vermillion, on Wednesday March 11, we recognized our religious sisters, Sr. Tresa Margret, Sr. Noel and Sr. Navya, who have combined for nearly 50 years of ministry in Vermillion, and well over 100 years of religious life. Last month, in conjunction with this designated year, they held an open house, as did many religious orders. During the summer, the faithful are encouraged to participate in one of the service ministries of a religious order. Also in national plans is a day of prayer with religious on September 13, 2015.

Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life

O God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to pursue lives of perfect charity through the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of ourselves to you. Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and daughters who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen

We have crossed the half-way point in the season of Lent. If you have slipped in your Lenten efforts, get up and try again; any failure to this point is a good reminder of our fragility and need for salvation. Any effort we do make after that recognition is something that helps build the kingdom of God. Re-check the brochures that were sent to each parishioner’s home for additional confession times and Holy Week services. I hope you take advantage of them, and the Lenten reflection day that will be held at St. Mary’s Church on Palm/Passion Sunday. Check-in at 11:45, lunch at noon, followed by presentations by Fr. Stan, and prayer. We will end at 3:00 pm.

Wednesday, March 11 would have been my father’s 95th birthday. He was a dedicated husband and father, deeply spiritual, a hard-working farmer and carpenter with an amazingly high pain threshold. In addition, he was a very happy and cheerful man. For one week when I was 23 I did the workload he did for the better part of 30 years, and I was surly and exhausted. He taught me much about faith, forgiveness, humility and hospitality. He made friends of all ages, and I wish you could have met him. He also had a wisdom from experience of having five sons who enjoyed each other more than work: “If you have a boy working for you, you got a boy working for you. If you have two boys on a job, you have half a boy. If you have three, you got nothing.” Dad died on March 5, 2008, a week short of his 88th birthday.

Thursday, March 12 marked the 50th anniversary of the death of Fr. Anthony Kaesen, who was pastor of St. John the Baptist in Vermillion for nearly 54 years. He is buried in the parish cemetery. He was pastor from 1911 until his death in 1965 at the age of 90. I can’t find evidence that he ever had a pastoral associate during that time.

The weather has turned most pleasant these past few days, and as another sign of spring, the vernal equinox (first day of spring) will arrive at 5:45 pm on Friday, March 20. Enjoy watching the sun rise and set right on our lovely east-west roads right around 7:00 am and pm.

This past Thursday, March 12, was the 50th anniversary of the death of Fr. Antony Kaesen, who arrived as pastor in Vermillion on July 11, 1911, and remained as pastor until his death almost 54 years later. During his time as pastor, all the major buildings here were constructed: the church, rectory, convent and school. I did not know him, but we still have many parishioners who did.
