SAINT PIUS V Cannon Falls SAINT JOSEPH Miesville SAINT MARY New Trier SAINT MATHIAS Hampton SAINT JOHN BAPTIST Vermillion THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST JUNE 7, 2015 the Integrity The first time I preached on Corpus Christi at my last assignment, I pretty much preached the company line on who can and cannot receive communion and why. It was pretty basic stuff that nobody should have been surprised at. It turned out that one of my Prepare couples was offended. I was shocked to find why: the husband was not Catholic, but he was receiving Communion for years. They said the priest said it was OK, and ask why the Church go back to its old teaching. I told them the Church never changed this; that anyone who is not in communion with the Catholic Church (non-Catholics, those in a state of serious sin) are not to receive communion, hence the “communion.” They told me that was not very welcoming and it was judgmental. I asked, since they worship together, why he never became Catholic if he wanted to receive communion. They since he was already Christian coming to Mass all that time that he did not have to. If I was in the RCIA, I would be insulted by that. Over the years, once in a while at weddings and funerals, I get someone identifying him or herself as a Lutheran and if it is OK to receive. I tell them no and more times than not they respond back with “you can receive communion at my church. How come the Catholic Church is so unwelcoming and judgmental?” First of all, Catholics are not allowed to receive communion in someplace other than a Catholic Mass for the same reason that non-Catholics cannot receive communion at a Catholic Mass: because we are not in communion with each other. There is also the different beliefs between the Protestants on what that host really is. Some say it is Jesus, but only during the rite, others say it is just a symbol. Second of all, how is it that the tipping point of whether or not a church is welcoming or not is determined by whether or not everybody receives communion? I am of the belief integrity is lost if that happened. Finally, I find being called judgmental for upholding the Church’s teaching absurd. The fact of the matter is people need to be honest with themselves where they are at in life. If they find they are not in communion with the Church, why pretend? They are not being honest with themselves I have the utmost respect for those folks in the communion line who cross their arms and ask for a blessing. They show that they have a bit of integrity. But I would hope one day that they would take measures to become in communion with the Church. Being received into the Church is a time of great joy and cause for celebration.TB Fr. FROM FATHER STAN 3

I’m just this minute returned from the pre-school and kindergarten graduations. As the pre-schoolers were introduced as the graduation class of 2028, we laughed, but I recall those where we introduced the class of 2012, or even figuring out that my youngest brother would graduate from college in 1987. At that time it seemed that day would never arrive; now the 2020s, and sometimes the 2030s are not that distant. As I looked at the just-graduated kindergartners, I realized that nearly a third of the time their parents would see them day by day, before they moved away to school or job or military service, had passed for them. Another reminder of how precious time with each other really is.

Congratulations to everyone who is graduating at any level. I’ve never been invited to be a commencement speaker, except at my own high school graduation. I think I would say a lot of what we hear in the gospels: do not be afraid; have faith in Jesus; learn to love without expecting it in return; be thankful for what God has given you; use your talents; you are yourself loved. I’d encourage people to make their life worth living, to be aware of each day. For the young people, I’d suggest that youth is for heroism, not for killing time, and that we do not just “find ourselves,” but rather are made from thousands of daily actions and decisions. How we choose to love creates habits which develop character.

Fr. Cole Kracke has visited all our parishes now, toured the buildings, and has made a good impression on many. He will begin to move things into the rectory around the middle of the month. He becomes pastor on July 1. I’m keeping him apprised of things as they move forward this month, and will try to make the transition as seamless as possible. In the next two weeks we have parish council meetings in each parish, and that will be a topic on all the agendas.

Liturgically we are in a special time: it is Ordinary Time (ordinary referring to ordinal numbers, such as first, second, third, etc.) but we keep having solemnities (the highest order of feasts). Last week was that of the Most Holy Trinity, this week is the Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi). This coming Friday, June 12, is the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The day after that is a lesser feast, a memorial called the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Two more feasts are later in the month: the Birth of John the Baptist, and the feast of Saints Peter and Paul.

In some parts of the world Corpus Christi is celebrated on Thursday, but in the United States it has been transferred to a Sunday, much like the feast of Ascension has been in much the country. It began to be

celebrated in the mid-13th century, and was made a universal feast, but it didn’t gain much traction until 1317. The procession of the Blessed Sacrament during this feast did not become common for another 150 years. The Sacred Heart of Jesus was a somewhat later development, first celebrated in 1672, and spread a bit after the visions of Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1675, but didn’t have a proper Mass until 1765. Even then it went through many transitions until the current format from 1970.

Despite all the feasts, we are in Ordinary Time, now entering the 10th week of Ordinary Time. We will stay in it through the 34th week, at which time Advent begins. During these many weeks we will hear of the basic teachings and actions of Jesus Christ as we read through the gospel according to Matthew on the weekends. During the weekdays we are finishing Mark, and begin Matthew on Monday, then go to Luke in the fall.

I awoke very early one day this week and found myself unable to get back to sleep, so I decided to get some exercise by walking the streets and parks of Vermillion while saying a couple of rosaries. First, I’m impressed with the number of people up and or out between 4:30 and 5:00 am. Second, it is a delight to hear the birds begin to sing and become a mighty chorus as dawn breaks. It is a good reminder also as to how much can be accomplished by 8:00 am. I knew I did it on the farm – milk the cows, do various chores, shower, eat breakfast and arrive at my computer job by that time, but it is good to renew those habits now and then. Many people who are in a funk can be improved simply by doing things differently: if you get up late, get up early. If you always eat cereal, have pancakes. Drive a different route to work. Watch a different TV show or listen to a different radio station. Sometimes it is good to take a little vacation from how we usually do things. Just a little mental health tip.

Just in: Youth: Four spots suddenly opened up on a pilgrimage/retreat trip to a Steubenville conference in Denver, CO June 18-25. (Yes, that's in a couple of weeks). These are being offered at half price (now $300) for the full trip. They will attend the weekend conference and then have a retreat in the mountains focusing on discipleship before heading back. Your new pastor, Fr. Cole Kracke will be attending this pilgrimage with them, himself filling in for a priest called to military duty. The lay leader will be Gina Bauer who recently led our 5-parish middle school retreat and worked with our high school youth leaders. For more info, contact Cathy Roche, the FF Coordinator at St. Joseph, Miesville: 651-437-3526 ext. 24 [email protected] It's a great spiritual-growth opportunity and a good deal--Steubenville conference + retreat + Colorado + Gina Bauer+ time with the new pastor!

Received from one of our Common Hope sponsored children; How are? I am fine. In my community there is a church where a procession leaves from on Sunday. A pasada leaves from the homes of the people in the community. It is all very happy and there is a celebration in the church on Sundays. There is also a mass. I send you many kisses. Ana”

If you are thinking of traveling to Guatemala, you can join a Common Hope Vision Team and visit our sponsored children. Info posted on the bulletin board.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word has ended for the summer and will resume in the Fall.

The MinisTree has donation opportunities available. See the MinisTree in the main entrance. The Lock In at Camp Victory is fast approaching. If you don’t have the forms in yet, there is still room. Let us know right away! If you have prizes to donate they can be brought to the office before June 12.
