SAINT PIUS V Cannon Falls SAINT JOSEPH Miesville SAINT MARY New Trier SAINT MATHIAS Hampton SAINT JOHN BAPTIST Vermillion 10TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 5, 2016 the Missions Next weekend, we will have Sister Rose Hang Vu present at all the Masses at Saint Pius V and Saint Joseph to speak on her mission “Friends of the Poor.” Sister Rose of the Sisters of the Good Shepherd in Shoreview established the Friends of the Poor program in 1988. Their goals are to help poor children who live in rural places, so they have clean water, food, adequate shelter, clothes and a chance to go to school; and to support young men and women who are discerning their religious vocation. What they have done: provided food at daycare centers; bought beds for the orphanage; built libraries, an orphanage, an education center for runaway youth, and 15 playgrounds; provided bicycles for transportation; established projects to enable families to support themselves; and supported more than 150 men and women in discerning their religious vocation. What still needs to be done: provide medications and first aid supplies to the orphanages; build more wells; repair housing; build more playgrounds for daycare centers; purchase books for libraries; provide teaching materials; financial aid for orphaned students; provide sewing machines and skill building for young girls as a means to avoid human trafficking; and maintain the established projects and support systems. Sister Rose will speak to all that, and there will more than likely be a second collection. In mid-July, specifically July 16 and 17, Father Tom Huntstiger will preside at both Masses at Saint Pius and the 10:30 at Saint Joseph to make a pitch for Cross International. That will be my opportunity to take the weekend off and visit Mom. In the Archdiocese, each parish is required to have at least on missionary come in and the Archdiocese’s Center for Mission arranges which mission goes to each parish. No offense to Sister Rose, especially since she and her mission are doing the Lord’s work, but I wish that the Center for Mission would send a priest. I am being selfish with that complaint because missionary priest means I can take the weekend off. Cross International is not a mission that the Archdiocese sends to parishes. They solicit parishes and pastors to see is they can come in and make an appeal. Normally, I say no to these solicitors. I have been burned in the past by one of them. I gave specific instructions to keep Mass no longer than an hour. After I came back from visiting Mom, it was reported to me that Mass lasted an hour and a half, the priest preached so long. That particular mission called the following year to come in again and I said absolutely not. Their priest defied my instruction, breaking my trust. One reason I said yes to Father Huntstiger is because I have dealt with him at my last assignment, so he knows my rules. The other reason why I said yes to him was because at the time, I thought I was going to be with the youth in Europe and he would be my coverage for that weekend. Of course, my plans changed after I said yes to Father Huntstiger. So, Mom gets a visit after all.TB Fr. FROM FATHER COLE 3

Last Wednesday afternoon I got a call from the Archbishops Office letting me know that he was free Saturday evening for Mass and would like to come for a visit to St. Mathias in Hampton. I was initially panicked by all the arrangements that needed to be made, but I was assured that the Archbishop likes to keep things pretty simple. I tried to get the word out as best as possible at daily Mass in Hampton and New Trier and the phone-tree was put into action. For a holiday weekend with little notice, our community really showed. I also reached out to our music ministers, including our tri-parish children’s choir and was so grateful for the flexibility to change the Mass plan. Thanks to Dave and Christy Baker as well as Maureen McNeary and our choir and musicians for the great music. Archbishop Hebda certainly enjoyed it. Thank you also to Peter Fitterer and Alec Otte who were our altar servers who also assembled the Archbishops Crosier (staff) before Mass. The Church looked great, our community was enthusiastic and it was one of the most enjoyable Masses that I have ever con-celebrated with a Bishop. I invited him back to celebrate in our other two parishes.

Do you want to host an exchange student a month summer? I recently received an email from Brandi Statz at International Friendship who said that they are looking for some host families when some high school aged children from Spain come to visit Hastings July 1-29. International Friendship is an organization that promotes meaningful, educational experiences and international friendships. They are truly passionate about providing these once-in-a-lifetime life learning experiences as we all know what a huge, positive impact they have for our international youth as well as the special, life-long friendships that come of it. I have a copy of the host family flyer and guidebook as well as student letters that I will forward to anyone who is interested. If you might be open to this, I would encourage you to contact Brandi as soon as possible. Her phone number is 608-347-4637 or email: [email protected] and the web page is: www.internationalfriendship.com

Our Tuesday evening Mass at 6:30 in Vermillion next week will be the graduation Mass for our 6th graders.

Peace, Fr. Cole

Thank you to Pat Reinardy, Barb Stodden & the St Pius V CCW for nominating me for the 2016 ACCW Lay Volunteer Award. It was such an honor to win this award. I want to thank my family & friends that attended the award ceremony and to all those who sent me cards. I appreciate your thoughtfulness ! Mary Lorentz

Thank you to Mary Ellen Wynne for her dedication to sorting and compiling the Econofoods receipts. Thanks to everyone that brings in receipts. Thank you Econofoods! We received another $1000 check.

We are in need of volunteers for the summer months for all Mass Ministries, but especially Saturday Mass. Please contact the office if you can help. Altar Servers, Ushers, Greeters and Eucharistic Ministers are most needed. We have received many requests to only be scheduled for certain dates. Scheduling is very challenging. And if you think you can do a better job, we would invite you to volunteer. If you see an “open” spot on the calendar and you can fill that spot, please call or email the office. We will gladly fill you in.

We are in need of pool noodles for VBS. If you have some that you can donate, please bring them to the office by June 8th.

St Pius V is blessed with many volunteers. We would like to recognize you for your contributions to the church. Please mark your calendars for Wednesday June 22 at 5:30 pm for our Volunteer Recognition BBQ. If you are a volunteer & would like to attend, there is a sign-up sheet in the parish office. We will also be recognizing Debbie Bauer for her many years of service (31 years) at this dinner. Hope to see you there!

Bloodmobile will be here Tuesday June 7th - 1:00 pm—7:00 pm.

VBS starts soon! If you don’t have your registration in, please take time to do it today!

Lock In for grades 6-12 this fall is Friday, June 24, 5:00 pm to midnight. $15—Get registered today!

We received a Catholic Services Appeal rebate. Thank you for your support of that ministry.

We will continue to collect Campbell’s soup labels and box tops. St. John the Baptist school will be the benefactor. We are not collecting ink cartridges or cell phones.

Thank you for all your prayers, cards and concerns during Duane’s illness and final stage of his journey here on Earth. God Bless you and yours. Vernon and Olive Hupf Family

SAINT JOHN THE BAPTIST 8

St. John the Baptist Catholic School

PreK-Grade 6

Michael Strommen — Principal 651-437-2644

St. John the Baptist Catholic School in Vermillion is accepting registration for 2016-2017. If you have school age children (3-years old – Grade 6) and would like more information, please call Sr. Tresa Margret, Principal 651-437-2644. We invite you to visit our school website www.stjohns-vermillion.com or our “Alumni & Friends of St. John the Baptist School” Facebook page. We encourage you to visit our school to see what we have to offer. We offer Before and After School Care Monday through Friday.

Safety on the Cemetery Road: Between now and the end of the school year we get additional traffic on the cemetery road from people paying their respect to loved ones. Please spread the word that we would prefer that these visits occur before 11:30 am or after 3:30 pm whenever possible, since children will be on the playground. We realize that this will not always be possible. In these cases, cars will stop at the “slow man” barricade that is placed on the road during these hours, and playground supervisors will halt all children and escort the cars to the cemetery.

Corporal Work of Mercy: Visit the Prisoners

Volunteer to help out or donate to charities that help children whose parents are in jail or prison.

All School Field Trip: St. John's School went on an all school field trip May 31. First they attended a performance of "Air Play" at the Ordway Center in St. Paul as part of the Flint Hills International Children's Festival. They were treated to a spectacular visual display using air to reshape and move materials. After the performance they were able to take in some of the children's activities in Rice Park. To end the day, the school visited the Cathedral of St. Paul. There they said the Chaplet of Divine Mercy, walked through the Holy Door for the Jubilee of Mercy, and were able to prayerfully tour the Cathedral.
