SAINT PIUS V Cannon Falls SAINT JOSEPH Miesville SAINT MARY New Trier SAINT MATHIAS Hampton SAINT JOHN BAPTIST Vermillion 30TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 25, 2015 the The Stewardship of Time I have been saying this for the longest time that this is the most important part of stewardship. To me it makes sense, since this was my own pattern in life. Even though I have been a life-long Catholic, and I would like to think I am presently a pretty good steward of time, talent, and treasure, that has not always been the case. After all, for ten years after high school, I was not giving the Church my time in those ten years. When I felt it was time to strengthen my relationship with God, I found myself going to Church again. I had renewed excitement about the faith, but still it took a while for me to take important steps to be a good steward. Even though I would maybe toss in a couple of bucks in the collection from time to time, I certainly was not putting my money where my mouth was when it came to the faith. After all, I was a single male wanting to go clubbing to meet Miss America to be my significant other, and clubbing does not come cheap. Of course, Miss America never came my way and all I had to show for it was a large beer belly. After a couple years of being back to Church with a growing faith, I felt I must give something back in some way. So, I started volunteering for certain ministries starting with being an extraordinary minister of the Eucharist. That led to other ministries. The thing about it was that in volunteering for these ministries, it seemed that I benefited from it more than the people that were on the receiving end of it. Ministry helped me grow even closer to God in with the idea that God walks with me as I do his work. Through the time I invested, I developed decent stewardship with my talent. However, their was still one hurdle to jump: parting with my treasure. I would consider myself a tightwad. Parting with a percentage of my income took a huge leap of faith. How can I survive and entertain myself without those precious dollars? I guess I did not trust in God’s providence as much as I thought I did. I guess I was not as thankful to God for enriching my faith and my spirit as I thought I was. It was the investment of my time in the faith to realize that I must overcome that last hurdle. I lived to learn that being a good steward is part of being a good Christian. Giving God first fruits is the least we can do to appreciate this awesome gift of life we have received. It takes the stewardship of time encourage one to be a good steward of talent and treasure. If we truly feel the graces from having faith, we ought to be good stewards and evangelize others by inviting them to spend their time with God.TB Fr. The Stewardship of Time

I have been saying this for the longest time that this is the most important part of stewardship. To me it makes sense, since this was my

FROM FATHER COLE 3

Looking Ahead. One of the challenges that I have had since arriving is the relative fluidity of the calendar as it pertains to Mass times for special events and commemorations. Although it would be a laudable attempt, it is simply not possible to serve all three parishes equally, with Masses on every Holy Day and special liturgical days. In a single parish community, the calendar is pretty much set in stone, year after year as customs and traditions have a huge impact and a pastor of a single parish has the time to devote to that one community. No where is this more evident than planning for the Christmas and Easter seasons. The past couple of years each parish within our community has had the luxury and convenience of having a Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Mass. This schedule is not liturgically licit for a single priest to celebrate for good reasons. I am not sure what kind of extra help has been available in the past, but the reality is that there are fewer retired, chancery or seminary priests to help out as they themselves may be temporary administrators at parishes that are lacking a resident pastor. As a result, I am not planning on the availability of extra help as I plan the Christmas Mass schedule. My past experience is that the majority of the faithful prefer to celebrate the Nativity of our Lord, on the eve rather than during the day. My informal conversation with some random parishioners at each parish has confirmed this. I am also aware that some parishes have particular customs which I am trying to respect and accommodate when possible. There will be four Christmas Masses celebrated in our tri-parish that I hope will meet the needs of our community. Christmas Eve will be celebrated at 4:00 in Vermillion, 6:00 in Hampton and Midnight in New Trier. There will be a single Christmas Day Mass at 10:00 in Vermillion. The Christmas Eve schedule is identical to last year with the exception that the New Trier Mass is going from 11:00 to midnight. I am a firm believer that if we are going to call it midnight Mass, that is when it should be celebrated. At my last assignment, I celebrated the late Christmas eve Mass 3 out of my 4 years there and I found these masses to be among the most moving and joyful that I have ever celebrated. The quiet rural setting of New Trier will only add to this and I feel it is the midnight Mass that is uniquely Catholic. Since there will only be the one Christmas Day Mass, I wanted to have it in the largest Church in our community to allow for the greatest participation.

This is something that can be looked at next year. For planning purposes I also want to publish the schedule for some additional special Masses. All Souls (November 2nd) 7:00PM in Vermillion, may be just a simple celebration

Thanksgiving Day (November 26th) 9:00AM in Hampton, normal daily Mass 30 minutes later

The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception (Holy Day-December 8th) 9:00AM school Mass in Vermillion and 7PM Mass in New Trier

In the next couple of weeks I will also be posting the extra opportunities for the celebration of the Sacrament of Reconciliation during the Advent Season.

Sts. Mary, John the Baptist and Mathias, Pray for Us…..

Peace, Fr. Cole

St. Mary’s Maintenance Update

We received final approvals from the building inspector on the bathrooms. The last touch will be to put a larger partition in the doorway of the men’s room and make some other small changes to the partitions then the restroom project will be complete.

The bell tower and chimney tuck-pointing project continues to move along. Work will likely extend into the early part of November. The masons have reported that the bell tower structure under the brick looks sound and things are going well. The new bell ringing hardware will be installed next month as part of the final steps of the bell tower renovation.

The drain tile installation has been postponed to next spring. Some concerns were raised about the mortar holding the stones in place below ground level in the foundation. After consulting with structural engineers they strongly recommended tuck-pointing the stone work of the foundation.

Mortar used around the time of the building of the church has a much shorter life span than modern cement. As the old mortar loses strength the stones will start to shift and cracks will develop in the foundation.

We have not seen evidence of large cracks forming yet, but the mortar in some places has turned back to sand and is falling out. The best time to address this issue will be when we install the drain tile. To support that schedule we will delay the start of the foundation work and drain tile installation to next year after the ground has thawed.
