SAINT PIUS V Cannon Falls SAINT JOSEPH Miesville SAINT MARY New Trier SAINT MATHIAS Hampton SAINT JOHN BAPTIST Vermillion 5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME FEBRUARY 7, 2016 the Sacrilege Last Saturday after Mass at Saint Joe’s, I went up to West Saint Paul to hear confessions at the Net Center. I finished up there and was putting on my jacket when looked at my phone: “One missed phone call: Fr. Leonard Siebenaler.” It was getting close to 9:00 and he did not leave a voicemail, so I figured it was not important and I would call him the next day. So, I get on the road, and my phone goes off, I look and it is him. I normally do not talk on the phone while driving. I am not the best multi-tasker in the world. But, I figure that since he is calling a second time, I had better answer. “Hello Father Beeson, this is Father Siebenaler.” He tends to be a little formal. Maybe I should return the favor. When I call him I just say “Hey Leonard”. Fr. Siebenaler had a couple of questions which I now cannot remember what they were and he wanted me to be aware of a particular incident that happened at the 4:00 PM Mass at Saint Pius V. Keep in mind, I am telling this third hand: somebody told Father Siebenaler and now he is telling me. As the story goes, someone went and received communion in the hand and did not consume the host and walked out the door with it. Anybody who does that is committing a serious sacrilege on the Blessed Sacrament. When an unfamiliar face receives in the hand, I do my best to see out of my peripheral vision the person consuming the host. If that person does not immediately consume it, I will instruct that person to consume it. There are some evil groups out there who actually make it a practice doing this, taking a host at communion and walking out the door with it in order to go through some Satanic ritual with it. There is also the someone who did this at a Mass with the Pope at Saint Peter’s Basilica and tried to sell it on eBay. While I cannot catch everyone, it is my hope that the good folks who are in the pew keep an eye out for this to prevent this sacrilege.TB Fr.

FROM FATHER COLE 3

Next Wednesday begins the start of our annual Lenten observance with the celebration of Ash Wednesday. Masses will be at 9am in Vermillion, 5:30pm in New Trier and 6:45pm in Hampton. Although Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day of Obligation it is a day of fasting and abstinence for Catholics who are physically able to between the ages of 18-59 (fast) and 14 and up (abstinence from meat.) Every Friday of Lent is a day of abstinence from meat as a penitential practice. During Lent we will also mark the Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings at 7pm in Hampton. Next weeks bulletin will also detail opportunities for additional times for reconciliation and the schedule for the Triduum. Lent begins earlier than usual this year, but not as early as 2008 when it began 2 days earlier on February 6th, which is the earliest it can be. A note of appreciation to all those who helped with the recent renovation of the kitchen at the Vermillion rectory. One of the things that has impressed me the most about parishioners in our community is their willingness to lend a hand when work needs to get done which is a great gift and savings to the parish. Demolition began on Labor Day weekend and work was substantially completed before Thanksgiving with finishing touches the last couple of weeks. Many people helped with the demolition which filled a construction dumpster, electrical, plumbing, sheetrock and flooring as well as counter-top and cabinet installation, painting and design. It looks great and will serve future pastors nicely by making the kitchen more comfortable and functional. It was neat to see the timbers and brick from the 1883 church that were used in the 1923 construction of the rectory which were visible behind the plaster walls. The kitchen had last been updated in the late 1960’s but most of the original knob and tube wiring had remained. That was all replaced to meet today’s electrical code. Calling all members of St. Mary’s. Please plan on attending Mass on Sunday, February 21st at 8am in St. Mary’s. Following Mass, we will have a Town Hall to update the community on some of the progress that has been made on our maintenance plan and discuss some aspects of the strategic plan for the future with regards to building utilization and mission. The homily will be a little shorter that day with the hope that people will remain after Mass so that I can answer

some questions before the 10am Mass in Vermillion. If there are specific areas/topics that people would like me speak to, please call me or email me in advance so I can be prepared. I have recently read the results of the 2014 Grow Report in preparation for this meeting. In that survey, parishioners asked to be kept better informed so I look forward to seeing maximum participation as possible. Have a great week and I wish you the best in your Lenten preparations. Peace, Fr. Cole

Ash Wednesday Mass Schedule

February 10

St. Joseph’s 5:00 pm Mass

7:00 pm Mass (Latin)

The Stations of the Cross began as the practice of pious pilgrims to Jerusalem who would retrace the final journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary. Later, for the many who wanted to pass along the same route, but could not make the trip to Jerusalem, a practice developed that eventually took the form of the 14 stations currently found in almost every church. Join us each Friday night at 7:00 pm for the Stations of the Cross.

March 13! It is a sure sign of spring when we start planning for the annual Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinner. The dinner this year will be Sunday, March 13 11:30 am - 3:00 pm. This is a big FUNd raiser for the church. Please plan to help out and join the fun. Also, take flyers and plaster your town with flyers about the dinner. Watch for more details!

Ash Wednesday Mass Times: Wednesday, February 10 this year is Ash Wednesday. The Tri-parish Mass time schedule is as follows: 9 am School Mass—Vermillion 5:30 pm New Trier 6:45 pm Hampton

CHILDREN 'S CHOIR FORMING The children of St. Mary's, St. Mathias, and St. John the Baptist Churches are invited to join a newly forming tri-parish children's choir. The choir will rotate singing at Mass once per month at the three churches in March, April and May. The choir is open to all children in grades K-8 and no experience is necessary. Rehearsals begin on Wednesday, February 17th from 3:45-5:00 p.m. at St. John's. For more information and a complete schedule, please email Mo at [email protected].

Birthday Bags: The St. John's Second Grade is putting together Birthday Bags for people assisted by the Lewis House, a safe place for survivors of domestic abuse. The bags will consist of all the items needed for a birthday celebration – gift bag, cake mix, canned frosting, candles, and decorating items (balloons, streamers, etc). If you would like to donate any of these items, please send them to school labeled for Birthday Bags. We would like to be able to put several together Birthday Bags. The donated gift bags should be a size that will hold the other items, but not so big they would be hard to store. Please send in any Birthday Bag donations by February 19; we will start putting the bags together during that next week. For more information, contact Maria Therres ([email protected]).

KNIGHTS CORNER…

Remember that starting on Ash Wednesday, the

Vermillion Knights of Columbus will be holding their annual 40 cans for 40 days food drive! Our cumulative goal from all the parishes and school is 1000#'s or more! This will be collected at the end of Lent and distributed to local food shelves. One can per day of Lent, that's not much per person but it is to be a reminder of the sacrifice that our Lord has made and what a small gesture can help impact on a much larger picture. This can also be used as a conversation starter within families as to why we are doing this. So with this knowledge, I challenge all the parishes: which one can have more of a successful drive? I say, "Prove It!." Thank you for generosity and support! Grand Knight Tom Leifeld
