MERRY CHRISTMAS 3

This is the bulletin that will be distributed for our Christmas celebrations so I would like to welcome anyone who may be visiting us for the first time and extend to you a special welcome to the historic Dakota County parishes of St. John’s, St. Mathias and St Mary’s. We are glad to have you with us! I am extremely humbled to be celebrating my first Christmas Masses as your new pastor and am thankful for all who volunteered their time preparing for our special celebrations, especially our musicians and children’s choir directors. Remember as we commemorate the Nativity of our Lord, Christmas is more than just a single day - it is a season that we will mark until the Baptism of our Lord on January 10th. We are also in the early part of the extra-ordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy. Let us never forget the mercy that God shows us every day, whether we realize it or not, and our need to extend that mercy to others we encounter.

Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God is January 1st and a Holy Day of Obligation. Masses will be offered at 5pm on December 31st in New Trier and 10am on New Years Day in Vermillion.

With Gratitude. This week I received a check from the Give to the Max Day for $1559.63 to benefit St. John’s School. Thanks to all who contributed and remember 100% of your tax deductible gift goes to SJB school. If you would like to contribute you can give @ www.givemn.org/organization/410826791-7931342

I will be on vacation January 4th-11th. I have secured coverage for the weekend Masses as well as the school Mass on Wednesday, January 6th at 9 am. All other daily Masses that week are cancelled. May the peace of the Lord be with you always Merry Christmas

Merry Christmas I do not do too much Christmas Shopping. In fact, I only buy a gift for one person: my mother. Growing up as the youngest of seven, I would buy a gift for my mom, my dad, and one of my siblings. I think my parents were behind the idea of drawing names of which sibling to give a gift to, otherwise it would be taxing to buy five other gifts with so little money.

We continued that tradition well into my adulthood and included the spouses of my siblings. After a while, my brother and his wife decided to opt out to start their own family traditions. The rest of us kept it going even after my dad died. Somehow, a friend of the family, who I really did not care for either way, got in the drawing, and when I was told I had her name, I decided that was it. I did manage to switch names with my sister, but I told myself this was the last I was doing this. After all, I was in seminary at the time and trading gifts had lost its luster in favor of making it a more spiritual event. I could not be happier. My Christmases have been merry. And to all who read this: have a very blessed and merry Christmas!!!—TB

Enjoy fellowship after Masses on January 2 & 3. It’s another Muffin Sunday! This is a fundraiser for World Youth Day.

We have had a problem with several of the prayer votive glasses breaking and being a fire danger. Please check the candle before lighting to make sure the wick is up straight and do not leave match in votive but dispose of them in the metal trays. Thank you!

Knights of Columbus will be holding a Pancake Breakfast Sunday, January 17.

If you wish to make a contribution to the church in the 2015 tax year, your contribution needs to be in the church office no later than 8:00 am December 31.

The Mass Intentions calendar for 2016 is available. Stop by the office to schedule your intentions.

Our Sunday Visitor (OSV.com) has a free app available for smartphone and tablets! The app “365 Days to Mercy” is available for both Apple and Android systems. It is designed to accompany you on a spiritual journey during the Jubilee Year of Mercy proclaimed by Pope Francis. And it’s a FREE app!

Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph

"He went down with them and came to Nazareth, and was obedient to them." We might be tempted to think that Jesus more or less raised himself. As the Son of God, it might appear on first glance that earthly parents would be a mere formality for this particular child. But it wasn't so. Mary and Joseph had real influence, and real authority, over their son.

Although Jesus apparently understood from a tender age how he related to God ("Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house?"), he also knew that he owed appropriate respect to his parents. This is why he stayed in their home in Nazareth and was obedient to them. And because of this obedience, clearly Mary and Joseph must have been deeply influential in his life. Their direction, their teachings, their example, and their rules would all have shaped Jesus in his humanity. It was thanks in no small part to the matriarch and patriarch of the Holy Family that Jesus "advanced in wisdom and age and favor before God and man."

We should be advancing in these ways too! And those of us who are parents are likewise called to direct and guide our children to develop as Jesus did, not only forming our sons and daughters to succeed in the eyes of men, but also leading them on the path of "favor before God." The Holy Family serves as a beautiful model for us in this regard. They help us learn how to submit our lives to the loving leadership of our heavenly Father. But more than this, Mary and Joseph also serve as intercessors who, like any faithful family member or friend, want to pray with us and for us. Let us turn, then, to the intercession of the Holy Family asking that our families may be holy too.

Please help us make us this once in a lifetime pilgrimage!

Carol Carpenter, Anna Granger & Jordyn Granger will be making a pilgrimage to World Youth

Day in Krakow, Poland next July. In addition to being in the presence of Pope Francis, they will

be visiting many holy places on their journey to Krakow, such as: Fatima, the Tomb of St. Mark, the homes of St. John in Istanbul & Ephesus, the Vatican, the Holy Stairs (stairs Jesus walked up

when he was condemned by Pontius Pilate) and the Basilica of the Holy Family in Barcelona.

They need some help from us, their parish family, to make this journey. Please see the Gift

Board at the back of church. Donation options from $1-$100 are available. Cash donations are

fine as are checks, made payable to "St, Mary's". All gifts can be submitted during the offertory

in the provided envelope. Please mark "WYD" on the memo line of all checks. They are also

collecting your prayer intentions – which they will pray for now and carry with them on their pilgrimage (offering up at the holy places they visit).

Blessings and thanks to you for your generosity!

God, merciful father, in your son, Jesus Christ, you have revealed your love

and poured it out upon us in the Holy Spirit, the comforter, we entrust to you today the destiny of the world and of every man and woman.

We entrust to you in a special way young people of every language, people and nation:

guide and protect them as they walk the complex paths of the world today and give them the grace to reap abundant fruits

from their experience of the Krakow World Youth Day.

Heavenly Father, grant that we may bear witness to your mercy.

Teach us how to convey the faith to those in doubt, hope to those who are discouraged,

love to those who feel indifferent, forgiveness to those who have done wrong

and joy to those who are unhappy. Allow the spark of merciful love that you have en-kindled within us

become a fire that can transform hearts and renew the face of the earth.

Mary, Mother of Mercy, pray for us. St. John Paul II, pray for us.
