Rector’s Message Advent Christmas This Advent is shorter than usual with just 22 of a possible 28 days in the season of love, light, joy and hope. And this year, St. Richard’s is observing this short but important season with daily email medita-tions. The meditations you will receive from St. Richard’s are taken from the Advent Calendar from Loyola Press and include art, writing, and videos. The Episcopal Church has published four Advent Meditations entitled, “Preparing to Become the Beloved Community.” The meditations are based on the new vision document that The Most Rev. Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop, and Gay Clark Jennings, the President of the House of Deputies of The Episcopal Church laid out this spring regarding The Epis-

copal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation and justice. The Advent meditations welcome people to share their stories and consider the perspective of others. Questions are asked in

the meditations. “How will each of us learn to be reconcilers, halers and justice bearers in Jesus’ name?” Jus-tice and reconciliation are very big ideas as the meditation for Advent 2 describes. But they start with our stories. They continue with our shar-ing our stories. And inviting others to share their stories. The image that the meditations re-flect on is a labyrinth. A winding, twisting turning path that feels like a maze, but has no obstacles on the path, just turns. A fitting image for the story of Jesus’ birth. Your story is connected to the story of an ancient people in a faraway land. Because we proclaim Jesus as the incarnate son of God, we stand on the same path that Mary stood on as a Jewish woman in Palestine open to the bright vision of healing and whole-ness for the world. We stand on the same path with Joseph who found himself twisting and turning as an-gels visited him and told him that he would be the father, caretaker, pro-tector of the son of God. And we stand on the same path those shep-herds stood on visited by visions of angels and songs of praise. The scrip-tures and the tradition of the church serve as your long term memory and your continuous tradition of remem-bering our past in the Hebrew scrip-tures and continuing to envision our future, envision a new heaven and a new earth where divisions will cease and light will never fade away.

Come and worship. Light candles and give thanks. Feel forgiven and renewed by the season of Advent and the exaltation of Christmas and live new!

Rectors Message continued

Vestry Nomination In January, we will be inviting you to consider running for the vestry. The

vestry of St. Richard’s consists of 12 members of the congregation that are

elected on a three year cycle. We will have four members of the Vestry roll-

ing off at the beginning of 2018; Sue Sommers, Pam Menke, Kay Wolf and

Angie Fox. The canons of The Episcopal Church stipulate that vestries shall,

be agents and legal representatives of the parish and all matters concerning

it’s cooperate properties and the relations of the parish to its clergy. They

are to ensure that standard business methods will be observed. When a par-

ish is without a rector, the officers of the vestry are responsible for the con-

tinuation of worship and the calling of a new rector.

At St. Richard’s, our bylaws qualify candidates for the vestry as at least 18

years of age and an adult confirmed communicant in good standing (those

faithful in working, praying and giving for the spread of the Kingdom of God

at St. Richard’s for the past year.)

Please consider running for the vestry of St. Richard’s. We want visionary

leaders who want to continue the good work started here that has the great

potential for growth year to year. Forms will be available in January.

Someone’s missing, Lord! Maybe it is someone you know. Maybe it is you! The very center of the Christian life is worship on Sunday morning with our community of faith. And we miss the people we don’t see, often in their usu-al spots in church. And some of us miss worship even as we have decided for one reason or another not to be there. Someone’s missing, Lord. Our attendance at the 8:00 a.m. worship is up this year. Our attendance at 10:30 a.m. is down 25%. Did anyone notice that I was missing? Did anyone at St. Richard’s care? Someone is out there waiting for answers to these questions. Have you no-ticed that someone is missing? Have you wondered what is wrong? What is happening? Would you be interested in making some friendly visits? Maybe to people you know well. Maybe to people you would like to know better. Maybe to people whose gifts of faith and talent are deeply missed by many. The Rev. Dale Truscott will be training willing visitors sometime after the first of the year in the art of non-anxious outreach. We will learn about listening skills, how not to be defensive, how not to give speeches about church, how to accept in love whatever hurts or joys people wish to share, how to share each other’s concerns, hopes and challenges. Please contact Alison, rector@strichards, 407-341-4211, if you would be will-ing to explore the possibility of being a listening visitor reaching out to some-one you have missed.

Thanks so much to Cliff for all of the good work in the

Flower Room- it is a wonderful work space!!!

The Flower Guild

This year we have added some Advent light to the land-scape at St. Richard's. Clifford Jones, David Kellogg and Scott Schuermann set up trees of light on the property to light your way through to St. Richard's. Clifford has made many improvements to our campus over the past year. They include painting the St. Rich-ard's Room and the Pastoral Care office in the Parish Hall. Clifford stopped at garage sales and selected art and other items to add to the welcoming look of many of our rooms. A favorite item is the fountain in the men's room. Clifford went above and beyond getting St. Richard's ready for Hurricane Irma including adding panels to the bottom of the classroom and office doors to prevent flooding and taking the patio sails down and then putting them back up again. The Flower Guild has more functional counter space that Clifford built for them in October. The bathroom vestibule in the breezeway has a whole new look. Sue Youngsteadt, one of our resident artists, created a beautiful cross in red to enliven that dark spot. New lights have been installed to highlight the mural. And the doors of both bathrooms have been freshly painted in red. Thank you Clifford for these and many other things that you have contributed to the beauty and function of St. Richard's.

Christmas Lights at St. Richard's and other new wonders!

Subcommittee on Marriage Equality Update

A sub-committee of the vestry (Kay Wolf, Bonnie Danner, Stephen O’Connell, Jim Christoph, Bev Coll, Pam Menke, Alison Harrity, Dale Truscott, Ken Vinal (priest in the dio-cese) and Bill Gridley (member at All Saints Winter Park) has worked through the summer and into the fall to sub-mit for consideration to the Convention of the Diocese of Central Florida that will be held in Vero Beach on January 27, two resolutions. The resolutions are below. Canon Change Resolution The Forty-Ninth Annual Convention of The Diocese of Cen-tral Florida, January 27, 2018 o Resolution to Change Canon XVI, Section 10 of the Constitution and Canons of the Diocese of Central Florida o Presenters: The Subcommittee of St. Richard’s Vestry (The Rev. Alison P. Harrity, The Rev. Ken Vinal, The Rev. Dale Truscott, , Kay Wolf, Pam Menke, Bill Gridley, Bonnie Danner, Stephen O’Connell, Bev Coll, Jim Christoph) o Resolved, that Canon VXI, Section 10 paragraph one which reads, “All members of the clergy of this Diocese, having subscribed to the Declaration required by Article VIII of the National Constitution, shall be under the obliga-tion to model in their own lives the received teaching of the church that all its members are to abstain from sexual relations outside of Holy Matrimony” shall remain in effect and the second paragraph, “All members of the clergy of this Diocese may allow to take place in their cures, offici-ate at, bless or participate in, only those unions prescribed by Holy Scripture: the wedding of one woman and one man. Said clergy are forbidden to allow to take place in their cures, officiate at, bless or participate in any other unions, as proscribed by Holy Scripture” shall be stricken. For the Resolutions Committee: o Resolved: That this annual convention of the Diocese of Central Florida does now commit itself to work to be-come a church committed to ending institutional and oth-er forms of discrimination for LGBTQ+ people. And be it further, o Resolved: that acknowledging that we are not of one mind on issues of full inclusion for LGBTQ+ people in the sacramental rites of the church, the bishop appoint a Task Force of lay and ordained leadership of the Diocese of Central Florida of diverse opinions, perspectives and points of view of not more than 12 people who will be en-couraged to consult with LGBTQ+ people both members of church in the Diocese of Central Florida and those who might have left churches in the Diocese of Central Florida and consult with clergy and lay leaders in other dioceses.

And be it further o Resolved, that a report of said Task Force will be pre-sented at the next convention of the Diocese of Central Florida in 2019. Because these resolutions are intended to continue the conversation with Bishop Brewer and the Diocese about allowing same sex marriage in our churches and by our clergy, the press is interested in what we are doing. Ste-phen O'Connell has been contacted by Sue Jacobson of the Orlando Sentinel. Currently, Canon XVI section 10 makes it impossible for a clergy person canonically resident in the diocese of Central Florida or any building that is property of the Diocese of Central Florida (which all church property is) to conduct or be used for a marriage other than be-tween one man and one woman. Because the canon says what it says, any clergy person participating in a gay wedding could be subject to discipline by the church for violating the canons. Bishop Brewer has sited this canon as a reason he cannot give permission for St. Richard's to be used for same sex weddings because his hands are tied by the canon and he could face discipline for violating the canon. That is why we want the canon change to untie the hands of the bishop and give him the discretion to allow same sex weddings. He has said he will not allow them even if the canon change is adopted, which remains his prerogative. However, changing the canon is a first step in allowing gay mar-riage to take place in the diocese at all. The second resolution is modeled on the anti-racism resolution from 2004 that simply acknowledges the truth that we need to continue to talk to each other to get some common ground on the issue of same sex marriage and the full inclusion of gay people in the life of the church. The vestry wants St. Richard’s to be fully aware of the efforts being made to bring the Diocese of Central Flori-da more in line with The Episcopal Church and their offi-cial position to bless and sanctify marriage regardless of the gender of those being united. The Diocesan Convention is being held on Saturday, Jan-uary 27, 2018 at Trinity Church , Vero Beach. There are five pre-convention meetings taking place in January around the diocese where the resolutions will be dis-cussed. Members of the subcommittee have pledged to be at each of those meetings to speak to the resolutions that have been submitted if necessary. In addition,

Subcommittee Update continued St. Richard’s feels the need to be more involved in the larger life of the Dio-cese. Elections are held every year for Standing Committee (council of advice to the bishop), Diocesan Board (the governing body of the Diocese that deals with the budget) and a position as one of the Trustees of the University of the South (Sewanee). Kay Wolf and Bonnie Danner are running for seats on the Diocesan Board. Stephen O’Connell is running for the lay seat on Standing Committee, Pam Menke is running as the lay candidate for Trustee of the Uni-versity of the South. Alison Harrity is running for Diocesan Board and Dale Truscott is running for a seat on the Standing Committee. These elections will also take place at the Diocesan Convention in January. Please keep all these things in your heart in prayer that we might come to more mutual under-standing of the varied theological positions in the Diocese of Central Florida.

Please Note: December Taize falls on

New Year’s Eve this year.

There will be no Taize service in December.

YOUTH

Our youth group is moving along. This year along with studying the scrip-tures we have tried to add some interest and attention to the world beyond being a teenager in America. One of us plays in a marching band. One of us works in the big world. One is in a science fair. One is going as an exchange student. And as a group we have worked at a homeless headquarters and in a veteran's day project. The second Sunday of December we are cooking and serving and sharing dinner with our Family Promise guests. WE look forward to next semester when we can become more involved beyond our selves. Thank you to all the families and others who have driven and led our discus-sions. Tom Irish

Mindfulness Practice “Mindfulness is the energy of being aware and awake to the present mo-ment. It is the continuous practice of touching life deeply in every moment of daily life. To be mindful is to be truly alive, present and at one with those around you and with what you are doing. We bring our body and mind into harmony while we wash the dishes, drive the car or take our morning shower.” I saw this definition on the Internet a long time ago and saved it because I loved it, but I forgot to record the source. That is an example of the op-posite of mindfulness which is mind-lessness! The latter is easy and comes naturally; the former takes LOTS of prac-tice. Have fun with it. Gail Hencken

Jones High School Concert Choir and Wind Ensemble Bound for Carnegie Hall Jones High School Concert Choir and Jones High School Wind Ensemble have received the coveted invitation to

perform at Carnegie Hall, New York City, April 5-8, 2018. With over 1000 applicants, Jones High School (JHS) is the first high school in the country to have both its choir and wind ensemble (a select group of the best instrumentalists from the band) receive an invitation to perform in the same week at the World Strides National Youth Choir and National Instrumental Festivals at the prestigious concert venue.

Over a two day period, students will work with internationally known conductors in preparation for the culminating Festival concerts on the Carnegie Hall stage that has hosted world renown artist and ensembles including Tchaikovsky, Leonard Bernstein, the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Marian Anderson, Duke Ellington, Harry Belafonte, Yo Yo Ma, The Roots and Stevie Wonder. When not rehearsing, the students will receive an education with-out walls as they tour the cultural sites of New York City including the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building, The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture as well as experience the magic of a Broadway musical.

According to JHS Principal Allison Kirby, “Jones High School is honored to have both our wind ensemble and chorus perform at the world renowned Carnegie Hall. Like Carnegie Hall, Jones High School has a rich tradition of excellence and pride. Giving our students this once-in-a-lifetime experience will enrich our entire student population and let our top musicians display their talents - letting the world know why we are the GREAT Jones High School!” Fundraising Activities

Jones High student participation does not come without cost. JHS must raise $200,000 ($2,000 per student with chaperones) to ensure the students have the opportunity to experience 4 days of education, history and musical enrichment. To defray the cost, the students’ fundraising efforts include concerts, car washes, raffles as well as other events.

On Saturday, December 2, 7-10 pm, Second Harvest Community Room, 411 Mercy Drive, Orlando, FL 32805, Jones High School Foundation will host a benefit holiday concert and dinner featuring members of the JHS Concert Choir, Andrea Green, Director, and the Jones High School Wind Ensemble, Jamaal W. Nicholas, Director. Tickets for the holiday concert/dinner are $55 per person and may be purchase by sending a check or money order payable to

Car Washes at Chick-fil-a, Saturdays: 10 AM – 3 PM. 2885 S. Orange Avenue, Orlando 32806 December 2 January 27 March 31 Moreover, donations may be made online at www.SupportJonesHigh.com About the Jones High School Music Department Located in the underserved Parramore District, Jones High School is the second oldest continuously existent historically Black high school in the United States. However, the poverty level at JHS is high. 89% of the Jones High aca-demically outstanding students receive free or reduced lunch and up to 5% are homeless. Yet in spite of these statistics, over the last three years, more than 95% of both the Jones High School Choir and Wind Ensemble senior students grad-uate, enroll in college and receive college scholarships. The national average of student graduation with college enroll-ment is 69%.

Throughout its 122 year history, the Jones High School slogan, “Rich in Pride, Rich in Tradition,” has been exem-plified by its outstanding music program. First came the Jones High School Choir under the direction of Mattie Rigel fol-lowed by Ethel Wooden, Thomas C. Collier, Catherine Helms, Lessie Brayboy Weaver, Beverly McGowan Hicks, Roderick Williams, Helen Morrison, Roberta Bacon Manuel, Norman Choice, Edna Sampson Hargrett (a protégé of Mrs. Weaver), Darlean Coleman (a protégé of Mrs. Hargrett), Christopher Simms, Terrance Lane and the current director, Andrea Green (another protégé of Mrs. Hargrett).

Using the mantra “Think Superior, Act Superior, Be Superior, Sing Superior Plus,” the Jones High School Concert Choir (JHSCC) under Mrs. Hargrett and continued by Mrs. Green developed a diverse repertoire from opera to standard choral works to gospel as well as a reputation of performing at the highest possible professional choral standard. JHSCC impeccable performances led to the Choir’s first affiliation with the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra (OPO) under the baton of Maestro Hermann Hertz.

Recently, under Mrs. Green, a proud 1988 JHS and Florida A&M University alumna as well as a 24 year Orange County Public School educator, the Jones High School Master Singers (a select group of 30 of the best singers from the Concert Choir) wowed Maestro Eric Jacobsen, the current OPO Music Director, with an impromptu performance of “Lully, lulla,” a 16th century English carol. As part of the Spring 2017 Jones High School/Orlando Philharmonic Partner-ship concert, Mrs. Green continued the collaboration by conducting the Jones High School Concert Choir and members of the OPO in a performance of J. S. Bach’s “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring.”

Other recent JHSCC accomplishments under Mrs. Green include the Choir’s participation for three consecutive years (2014-2016) in the Walt Disney, Candlelight Performances, earning superior ratings at District and State Music Assessment Performances (MPA) for two consecutive years including a 2016 MPA Choir of Distinction designation. In 2014 the Concert Choir was featured at the Historic Ebenezer Baptist Church, Atlanta, GA. For seven consecutive years, 2011-2017, JHSCC members have received superior ratings at Solo and Ensemble MPAs. Choristers Brianna Butler and Terrance Tyree were winners of the 2017 Lower Division Grady-Rayam Vocal Competition -- Butler in the Female cate-gory and Tyree the Male category.

In 1950, Orlando Negro Chamber of Commerce president, Z. L. Riley was instrumental in convincing the then recent FAMU graduate, James “Chief” Wilson, to come to Orlando to found and direct the Jones High School Band. “Chief” arrived in August 1950 and the JHS Marching Tiger Band made its first public appearance on November 11, 1950, in the Orlando Armistice Day (now called “Veteran’s Day”) parade. The Marching Tigers subsequently were fea-tured in both many local as well as national events including the 1964 New York World’s Fair and the 1982 Knoxville World’s Fair.

Chief also developed an outstanding symphonic band which became the first high school band in the state of Florida to perform in its entirety a complete major symphony, Dvorak’s “Symphony No. 9 (From the New World).” Upon “Chief’s retirement, his student, Rufus Redding III, became Director of Bands (1989-2014). During Redding’s 25 year tenure, Jones High School Band performed at the 2009 Orlando Magic Playoff Game, the 2007 WWE Wrestling Mania, 2003 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the New Orleans Mardi Gras Parades of 1996, 1997 and 1998.

In 2014, Jamaal Nicholas, a student of Redding, 2009 Jones High School and 2013 Florida A&M University grad-uate, became the third leader of the JHS instrumental music program as Director of Bands.

Seen on a T-shirt… Eat, sleep, knit, repeat. That’s what Prayer Shawl members consider a life well spent. Watching a long thread of yarn being trans-formed with two sticks, a hook or pegs imbedded in plastic into a Pray-er Shawl, hat, blanket or scarf is a small miracle. The colors are end-less, the textures varied and the patterns can be simple or extremely challenging. The end results are al-ways rewarding both for the crafter and the recipient. This is the Tenth Anniversary Year of St. Richard’s Prayer Shawl Minis-try. In celebration, any infant or toddler Baptized at St. Richard’s from October 2017 to October 2018 will be presented with a blanket. To date one blanket has been present-ed to a very happy little girl, who positively glowed as she hugged her blanket and rubbed her face with it. That is why we knit, crochet or loom objects for others. They con-nect us to each other and remind us all that the comfort of God’s love always surrounds us.

Did you know that there are over 50 homeless refugees at Winter

Park High School? Episcopal Deacon Jim Flood reports that in his class alone there are 10 such students from Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands (refugees from Irma) -- even a couple from Venezuela (political unrest). Deacon Jim is involved in an effort to provide clothing (men and women, all types/sizes), toiletries, food, and Ross gift cards to be given directly to the students and/or their families. Our Deacon Rich will tell us more about it at our Sunday services this week and be available at the Red Booth after both services. St. Richard's is already doing its' share of mission work, but hurricanes and po-litical unrest present timely, new opportunities for us to share. This could be an on-going opportunity as the school district braces for another influx of refugees after the holidays. Thank you for your prayerful consideration.

Jones high school continued Nicholas has already lead both the JHS Marching Tigers as well as

Wind Ensemble to three consecutive years of straight superior ratings at Dis-trict and State MPAs. In addition, under his leadership, the Marching Tigers performed in the 2016 National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, DC. To build upon the band’s concert legacy, Nicholas formed the Jones High School Wind Ensemble which annually performs a Black History Month concert at the Hope Church.

In addition to the vocal and wind instrumental music programs, Jones also has a string program. All three divisions participate in the Jones High School/Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra Partnership.

Special Blessings

Wednesday, November 1, All Saints Day. Our healing service featured the

blessing of two dozen icons from the St. Richard’s icon guild. The images of the saints and an-

gles and all the company of heaven provided a wonderful window through to the divine.

Justin and Carmen Graham renew their vows

on their 5th Wedding Anniversary in October.

Evaly was baptized the following Sunday. The

Grahams are expecting their second baby in

the new year!

Kathie and Rich Wilson’s daughter Ruth visits

St. Richard’s with Hazel who was baptized at

St. Richard’s last year.
