Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Our first reading is from the Book of Nehemiah. The story takes place immediately after the exile in Babylon. The people have been restored to the Promised Land, but the land is desolate and the Temple has long since been de-stroyed. Nehemiah, the governor, and Ezra, the chief priest, call an assembly of the people. Ezra reads from the Book of the Law, explaining the Covenant to the people. He tells them not to be sad, but to rejoice. The Lord is with them and will be their strength. The second reading is a continuation of St. Paul’s discourse to the Corinthians on the gifts of the Spirit. Whether Jew or Greek, all have been baptized into one body and all have been given to drink of the same Spirit. All the gifts of the Holy Spirit, though different, are to build up the body of the Church. The reading from Luke’s gospel relates the beginning of Jesus’ public ministry. He returns to Nazareth in Galilee to his local synagogue on the Sabbath. Reading from Isaiah’s prophecy of the coming of the Messiah, Jesus proclaims that, today this scrip-ture passage has been fulfilled in your hearing “the Lord has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor, to proclaim liberty to captives, and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord” . Nehemiah 8:2-6, 8-10 1 Corinthians 12:12-30 Luke 1:1-4, 4:14-21

Page 3: Saint Robert Bellarmine - WordPress.com · 1/1/2019  · Nehemiah 8:2-6, 8-10 1 orinthians 12:12-30 Luke 1:1-4, 4:14-21 Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3 From the Pastor’s Desk

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today, the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time, we are again reminded of the presence and fidelity of God in our lives. Last week we heard John’s version of the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, with the spectacular miracle of turning the water into wine at the wedding feast at Cana. Luke’s version is much less dramatic but equally impressive. Jesus simply states that he is the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecy.

In the first reading from Nehemiah, the people have returned to Jerusalem from the Babylonian captivity to a barren and empty land. Ezra, the high priest, reads from the newly rediscovered Torah (Book of the Laws of Moses). Ezra is the high priest because he is the only priest. With the destruction of the Temple in 587 B.C. and the exile of several generations, the Jewish people are without a priestly caste and without a king (they are still under Persian rule). They need to rebuild. Nehemiah, the local governor, has been given permission from the Persian king to rebuild the temple and re-establish the nation. But the people have forgotten the law and have lost hope. Ezra reads them the Law which is a sign of liberation, leading to life with God. Ezra tells the people to rejoice because God is with them and the Lord himself will be their strength.

This is a wonderful vision that contrasts sharply with our own view of the law of God as a burden that restricts our freedom. But Ezra is right. The Law of God does liberate us, bringing freedom from selfishness and self-centeredness that leads us down the path of destruction. Sin binds us, restricting our ability to see and act on the wisdom of God. God’s will is always for our highest good. Sin blinds us to this reality.

The gospel promise of Isaiah finds its deepest meaning in this spiritual truth. The Messiah (the Anointed One) will deliver God’s people. The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim liberty to captives, to restore sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free. What Ezra promised, what Isaiah foretold, Jesus now pro-claims fulfilled. Jesus is the Messiah, the Anointed One of God, who brings liberty and freedom to the people who have been held captive and oppressed by sin and to restore spiritual sight to those who have been blinded by their own self-will.

What a shock that must have been to his listeners. These were people whom Jesus grew up with, his own hometown. And he is telling them that the prophecy is fulfilled today in their hearing. If we can only open our hearts to believe the good news and trust in God’s wisdom, we too can be set free and enter into the heavenly kingdom, here in this life as well as in the next.

Due to the snowstorm, we had to cancel the Parish Pastoral Council Retreat last Saturday. We hope to reschedule sometime later in the spring to reflect on the strengths and history of our parish and share some thoughts about our future.

Catholic Schools Week begins today with a special family mass at noon followed by an Open House in the School. All are welcome to stop by, see some of the great work our kids are doing, and to meet the teachers. I am very proud of all the hard work and effort of our students, faculty and staff.

Because the Feast of St. Blase (February 3rd) falls on Sunday this year, there will be individual throat blessings at all the masses next weekend. There will also be individual blessings this Wednesday (January 30), when the school will attend the morning mass.

The Annual Catholic Appeal begins the weekend of February 16-17, with Cardinal Cupich’s homily on CD. The Annual Catholic Appeal supports the faith formation of people of all ages throughout the Archdiocese. The Appeal provides critical funds for services that parishes cannot support on their own. The in-pew pledging process will take place the following two weekends. Thank you to all who have supported the Appeal in the past. Those who have donated pre-viously should have already received a pledge card from the Cardinal’s office. Our goal this year is $35,531. All funds we raise above that amount will come back to the parish. Thank you for your continued generosity and support.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil

The 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal “Come, Follow Me…and share the Word”

Have you received your direct mailing regarding the Annual Catholic Appeal request from Cardinal Cupich? Please thoughtfully and prayerfully consider the value that your donation brings to the many organizations within the Archdiocese when you complete your pledge and return your re-sponse as soon as possible. On behalf of those served by the ministries, parishes, and schools who receive funding from the Appeal, we thank you for your gifts. The Annual Catholic Appeal offers a wonderful opportunity to answer Jesus’ call to “Come, Follow Me…and share the Word.”

In addition to providing for ministries and services throughout the Archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help here in our Parish. For example, Appeal funds support our Faith Formation, Theology on Tap and SPRED programs. The Archdiocesan departments such as engineering and human resources help us with their expertise in matters such as remodeling and payroll functions. As we contemplate God’s many gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude. Your financial support for the work of our Parish, our Archdiocese, and the Church throughout the world is one way to express this gratitude. Please give generously to the 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal. When our parish reaches its goal of $35,531 in paid pledges, all additional funds contributed will be returned to St Robert’s for use in our Parish. We hope to raise an additional $10,000 to cover some unbudgeted repair work in the Church.

Annual Family “Blanket Challenge”

Friday, February 8th between 6:00-9:00 pm in Kernaghan Hall

Common Threads Blanket Ministry challenges you and your family to work together and keep the Christmas Spirit of Giving alive.

This year there are two activities to pick from!

1) Make gifts of love for preemies in Loyola Hospital’s NICU. Research shows that “lovie” cloths carrying the scent of moms and dads help soothe NICU babies and promote bonding. The fabric is worn against the parent’s skin to absorb their scent. It’s then placed with the baby as a source of comfort. Each “preemie family” will be given 2 lovies in a packet with a prayer and hand-written note. Completed lovies will be delivered to Loyola University Hospital.

2) Make fleece baptismal blankets These blankets are given to every child baptized here at St. Roberts.

We’ll provide all the materials for both projects (although sharp scissors appreciated). No experience necessary. Experienced blanket and “lovie” makers will be on hand to assist you.

Note: There will not be a regular Common Threads monthly meeting on Feb 7th, since the “challenge” is on the 8th.

A Reminder…. Our online payment partner is GiveCentral.org, a secure interface for making
