Solemnity of Christmas The Birth of Our Lord Jesus Christ

The prophet Isaiah tells us that the people who have walked in darkness have seen a great light. Unto us a child will be born who will be called Wonder-Counselor, God-Hero, Father-Forever, Prince of Peace. He will rule in jus ce and peace forever. St. Paul tells Titus that the grace of God has appeared, saving all who await the appearance and glory of our God, the Lord Jesus Christ. He gave himself to “deliver us from lawlessness and cleanse for himself a people as his own.” This light and hope become a reality as St. Luke tells the story of Jesus’ birth. Mary and Joseph travel to Bethlehem to be enrolled for the census. Because there was no room for them at the inn, Mary gives birth to Jesus in a manger in the stable. The angel proclaims the good news of great joy; a savior has been born who is Christ the Lord. Isaiah 9:1-6 Titus 2:11-14 Luke 2:1-14

Fourth Sunday of Advent In the first reading, Ahaz, King of Judah, finds his kingdom threatened by the Assyrians. Isaiah reminds him that God will protect his people if they remain faithful to the Covenant. He tells Ahaz to ask God for a sign. Ahaz says he refus-es to tempt the Lord. Nonetheless, Isaiah proclaims to the House of David that the Lord will indeed give him a sign: the virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall name him Emmanuel, which means "God is with us". St. Paul re-minds the Romans that Jesus is the fulfillment of the scriptural prophecy that the Christ will come from the House of David. Thanks to Jesus’ resurrec on from the dead, they now belong to Christ. In the gospel, we hear Ma hew’s ver-sion of the Annuncia on. When Joseph discovers that Mary is with child before they have lived together, he decides to divorce her quietly to protect her reputa on. The angel of the Lord comes to him in a dream and tells him that it is through the power of the Holy Spirit that Mary has conceived. She is to have a son that Joseph is to name Jesus be-cause he will save his people from their sins. The angel reminds him of the prophecy of Isaiah which we heard in the first reading. When Joseph awoke, he did as the angel commanded him and took Mary into his home.

Fourth Sunday in Advent Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

This week we celebrate the Fourth Sunday of Advent. This is the season when we make a special effort to recon-cile rela onships, forgiving those who have hurt us and honestly seeking forgiveness from those we have hurt. In response to God’s overwhelming generosity we are called to respond generously to the needs of those around us. Advent invites us to be more kind, generous and openhearted as we await the miracle of Christmas with great joy and wonder.

We hear the promise of salva on in our Advent readings. Nearly 800 years before the birth of Christ, the prophet Isaiah tells King Ahaz that the virgin will bear a child who will be named Emmanuel, "God is with us". At a me when the kingdom was beset by more powerful neighbors (the Assyrians), Isaiah reminds the king, and us, not to trust in worldly alliances but in the power of God and his promise to save his people. Paul tells the Romans, a community of Jewish converts, that Jesus who was crucified and rose from the dead is the fulfillment of the prom-ises of scripture foretold by the prophets. The Archangel Gabriel comes to Joseph in a dream telling him not to be afraid to take Mary as his wife. She has conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and will bear a son. Joseph is to name him Jesus, which means he will save his people from their sins. This will fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah, that the virgin will bear a child and they shall name him Emmanuel, which means God is with us. When Joseph claims the child as his own and names him Jesus (at the Presenta on in the Temple), Jesus officially becomes his child, born of the House of David.

With Christmas only a few days away, let us all take the me to give thanks for our many blessings and to share the joy of this holy season with those around us.

At Christmas this promise is fulfilled. Isaiah says that those who walked in darkness have seen a great light. And this light will bring us abundant joy because the yoke of burden will be li ed. The child to be born will bring peace and salva on and his kingdom will last forever. St Paul tells us that the grace of God has appeared in the person of Jesus Christ, bringing salva on and deliverance from evil. In the gospel the message is made known to the shepherds as the angel announces the fulfillment of God’s promise: “I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a Savior has been born for you who is Christ and Lord.”

As we celebrate with great joy this great gi of our salva on, may we all experience the warmth of God’s love. May we share that love, peace and reconcilia on with one another. In a special way I would like to welcome all those who are visi ng us here at St. Robert’s, all who are returning home to spend the holidays with your families and all those who have been away from the Church. To all our parish family, may the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you this Christmas and throughout the coming year. Wall Calendars for 2020, courtesy of Lawrence Funeral Home, are available at the back of church and in the recto-ry. We are providing a complimentary copy of Ma hew Kelly’s new book, “The Biggest Lie in the History of Chris -anity” to our parishioners and those who a end our Christmas masses. Please take only one copy per family, so that everyone can enjoy this exci ng journey with Jesus. Thank you to everyone who hosted our holiday celebra ons: the Simbang Gabi Mass and Dinner, the SPRED Christ-mas Party, the Holly/Hobby Fair, the Christmas Pageant and the Volunteer Apprecia on lunch. These fes ve occa-sions brightened up our lives and made us all feel appreciated during this very busy me. Please keep in your prayers all who will be alone this Christmas, those who are mourning the loss of a loved one and those who are struggling to find a reason for joy. Let us pray for the safe return of the men and women of our armed services, for the people of Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, and, in this season of peace, for an end to war and violence. Have a Blessed Advent and a wonderful Christmas. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
