Church in La n America

La n America is home to the largest number of Catholics in the world; yet the Church struggles to bring the Word and grace of God to her people. In some countries there is only one priest for every 40,000 Catholics. Due to poverty, many men and women called to religious life cannot afford to leave their families or pay for their educa on. Poverty also prevents many communi es from having their own priest, deacon or religious sister to instruct them in the faith or to bring them the grace of the sacraments. They depend on the generosity of others to help keep the light of faith shining in their communi es.

Since the safety protocols do not allow for physical collec ons, please use the envelopes in your packets or pick one up in the ves bule as you leave the church today. Thank you for your generosity.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

In the first reading the Lord sends Jonah to Nineveh to announce the impending judgment of the Lord. The people believed the prophet and proclaimed a fast in repentance for their sins. When the Lord saw this, he spared the city. St. Paul tells the Corinthians that the me of the Lord’s return is near, reminding them that the world is passing away and that they should focus on eternal values. In the gospel, Jesus begins his public ministry a er John the Bap st is arrested. He tells the people to repent because the kingdom of God is at hand. He then calls Peter and Andrew, James and John to follow him and he will make them fishers of men.

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 3

From the Pastor’s Desk

Today we celebrate the Third Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Scriptures remind us that the Day of the Lord is near. They seem to be announcing the end me, a strange beginning to the year. This is the year of Mark’s gospel, in which there is no infancy narra ve. St. Mark begins with Jesus’ public ministry and sets a tone of urgency in his gospel. St. Mark wants his audience to understand and to feel the immediacy of Jesus as the Messiah. He wants the people to be convinced of the realiza on that their salva on is at hand and the need for repentance now, to ensure their par cipa on in God’s heavenly kingdom. The other two readings reinforce this message for believers today.

In the first reading, Jonah, the reluctant prophet, is sent to the pagan city of Nineveh, capital of the Assyrian em-pire to announce the Lord’s judgment on the sins of that great city. Jonah announces to them that in forty days the city will be destroyed. The people of Nineveh believed God and proclaimed a fast in sackcloth and ashes for the repentance of their sins. When God saw by their ac ons that they had turned aside from evil, he repented the evil that he had threatened upon them and did not destroy the city.

It is really a remarkable story of conversion and faith. Jonah, who is an unknown foreigner, comes announcing doom from a God that is foreign to the Ninevites, therefore having no power in their kingdom. The scripture tells us that the people of Nineveh believed God and turned from their evil ways. The only explana on for this is that the power of the Holy Spirit was at work, not only in Jonah’s proclama on, but in the hearts of the people as well. They recognized the truth; and God repented. It’s hard to believe that God needs to repent. Repent means to “re-think”, to turn away. God is turning from his plan of ac on because the people turned away from their sins. God is not simply reading their hearts, but sees the proof of their conversion in their ac ons.

Jesus proclaims the same message: This is the me of fulfillment. The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent and be-lieve the gospel. The me of fulfillment is made present in Jesus’ public announcement of his ministry. That is why St. Mark begins his gospel with the proclama on of the kingdom. The kingdom is at hand because Jesus is physical-ly here. In his very person he makes manifest the reality that he proclaims. This reality is what underlies our faith in the sacraments: visible signs of God’s presence that contain the reality they proclaim. And the response that Jesus calls for, like Jonah’s message to the Ninevites, is to repent and believe. Christ is asking us to believe in him and to believe his words. Gospel means “good news.” So to repent is to turn away from unbelief (lack of trust in God).

In the second half of the gospel story Jesus sees Simon Peter and Andrew cas ng their nets into the sea and calls them to follow him and he will make them fishers of men. Astonishingly, they abandoned their nets and followed him. He repeats this call to James and John and they follow him as well. The repentance of the apostles is to aban-don (turn away from) their old way of life. It is their ac on of following Jesus that is proof of their conversion. This call is no different for us today. Jesus asks us to abandon our old way of life of self-centeredness, what St. Paul calls preoccupa on with the things of this world (which will pass away), and follow him. And it is by our ac ons, our way of life, that we show him that we do believe the good news and desire to be a part of his kingdom. In St. Mark’s gospel the kingdom is at hand, here and now, not simply a promise for the future.

Catholic Schools Week begins next Sunday with a special blessing at the 10:00 a.m. mass, followed by an Open House in the gym.

The Annual Catholic Appeal begins next weekend. The pledge process will take place the following two weekends, February 6-7 and 13-14. Most of these funds support Catholic educa on, capital needs for poor parishes, aid to the poor and archdiocesan support ministries. I will have an ar cle about this in next week’s bulle n.

Have a great week. Sincerely, Fr. Neil
