Annual Report—Part 5 of 7 July 1, 2017 - June 30, 2018

Parish Life Commission Parish Life Commission fosters a sense of parish unity by organizing and welcoming all to community-building events.

This past year showed a lot of change to the Parish Life Commission. We bid farewell to a few of our members and welcomed others. Under new leadership, we hope to see some exciting new events, as well as the opening of the new

St. Edna Parish Center. While we are still in a holding pattern due to the construction of the Parish Center, we still have some exciting events on the calendar. Please be sure to check out the Bulletins every week for more information on all future events. In the meantime, here are some updates from the past year, on a few of the ministries associated with Parish Life. For a full list of the ministries please check out the St. Edna website at: http://www.stedna.org/parishLife/commissionOverview

Gardening for God saw its 16th season with 50 volunteer gardeners and 32 garden plots. Check out all their hard work all around the Parish grounds. They had a bit of a rough time this past season with all the construction, but fortunately all the rain helped mitigate the loss of water. GFG will be back next Spring preparing new flower beds after the construction together with planters under the portico and boxes at the Church entrances during the Christmas and Easter seasons. Be sure to look for their handiwork.

The St. Edna Sunday Evening Bowling League was held every other Sunday of the month. The season ran from September until April. They played three games beginning at 6:00 pm and finished around 8:30 pm at Arlington Lanes located at Dundee and Kennicott. If you are interested in joining this fun-loving group, please visit www.stedna.org for contact information. (There was also a Mixed Senior Bowling League held on Wednesdays at 12:30 pm at Arlington Lanes from August through April.) Let’s get rolling!

The St. Edna Men's Golf League had another wonderful year at Cary Country Club. They played once a month May through September and the weather was good for all five of their outings. No rain, a little cold in May and hot in July. Their membership grew this past year by five golfers and they hope to grow again this season.

The Photographer Ministry is headed up by our very own Frank Starshak and Rob Unger. Together they try to cover all the St Edna (and sometimes Knights of Columbus, if on St Edna campus) events. They edit all the photos, deleting the poor or duplicate shots themselves and have been doing so for a very long time. Their services are invaluable to the St. Edna community. If you are in need of their services, please contact Laura Kniskern, at the Parish Office. The office informs and directs them as to what is needed. The requests are then prioritized and off they go. St. Edna archives all of their work. If you see Frank or Rob, be sure to smile and say cheese!!

We had to say goodbye to the Welcoming Ministry this past year. This ministry helped welcome new parishioners after masses once a month. They provided a more hands on introduction to our Parish.

The Knights of Columbus – Their motto is “In Service to Once, In Service to All”. The Knights are the world’s largest Catholic Fraternal Service Organization with over 1.9 million members around the world. Membership is limited to practicing Catholic men aged 18 or older. They were involved in numerous deeds in and around our Parish, helping out here and there, whenever we called for their assistance. For more information, please contact Michael McNicholas, Parish Representative, at 847-632-1903.

We are always looking for ideas and new members. If you are interested in joining Parish Life Commission, or volunteering for Parish Life events, please contact Kathy Romza at [email protected] or Sue Jackson at [email protected], or you can check us out on the Parish website at www.stedna.org under the Parish Life tab.

Respectfully submitted by:

THANK YOU Thanks, everyone, for making my Installation Mass and Reception last Sunday such nice events. Lots of people planned and coordinated the 11:30 a.m. Mass and made it a very moving Liturgy. The music (as always) was wonderful. I am very grateful for everyone’s efforts. Many more people made sure the Reception in the Doherty Center provided a place of hospitality and welcome to all who stopped by. My grateful thanks to them, too. All the delicious food and the beautiful cake were enjoyed by everyone. St. Edna’s sure knows how to throw a party! In February an even BIGGER party will take place in our brand new Parish Center when Cardinal Cupich will be coming here to dedicate our newest building.

I am glad to be your Sixth pastor. I have large shoes to fill based on the legacies of our five previous pastors and our one Administrator over the last 53 years. I hope and pray that the years ahead under my pastorate will be good years and blessed years, and that the good people of St. Edna’s will remain united in Christ’s love and continue living out the gospel call to “Love One Another”.

With gratitude, Fr. Darrio

World Mission Sunday

Thank you for your generous response to the collection for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith last weekend on World Mission Sunday! Our parish raised $3,347.00 in support of communities of faith in some of the most economically disadvantaged regions of our world. Your gifts and prayers contribute to the ongoing effort of the universal Church in service and authentic global solidarity. As Pope Francis has said, “The Christian faith remains ever young when it is open to the mission that Christ entrusts to us. ‘Mission revitalizes faith.’”

All Souls Day Mass On Friday, November 2, at 7:30pm, St. Edna will celebrate Mass for All Souls Day. At this Mass, we celebrate and remember all of our deceased relatives and friends. As a special remembrance, we will read the names of those who have died this past year. You are invited to bring a photo of your loved one and place it on the shelves and tables in the Narthex near the Holy Family Statue where they will be on display for the remainder of the month. If you cannot be with us on November 2nd, photos may be brought and placed on the shelves in the Narthex any time in November. We ask that you put a sticker on the back of your loved one’s picture with your name and phone number on it so that, in case it is not claimed later, we will know the family the photo belongs to and be able to return it. At the end of the month, you will be asked to pick up the photo and take it back home with you. Our hope is that this Mass and memorial area will assure you that you and your loved one are, and remain, a very special and important part of our St. Edna Family. Please join us for this special Mass.

S , O 28, 2018 THIRTIETH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

I can see clearly now Certain events leave us with the sensation of scales falling from our eyes. Maybe it’s a directed retreat or parish mission that shatters our complacency and brings us to tears. Or maybe it’s just life happening to us in all of its raw power—in birth, loss, love, or pain—that promotes a clearer value of what’s really important. All in a moment, we sense what we need to do, or stop doing, to be true to what’s real. When those hours arrive, pay attention! Jesus is calling, a way is opening, and all that’s required is to say “yes.” TODAY'S READINGS: Jeremiah 31:7-9; Hebrews 5:1-6; Mark 10:46-52 (149).

M , O 29, 2018 Let go and let God

The novelist Henry James wrote: “Three things in human life are important: the first is to be kind; the second is to be kind; and the third is to be kind.” It is not always simple or even possible, though, to know how to be kind to others. In the tricky and complex situations you occasionally find yourself, the “high road” is not always clear: “Would this person appreciate an explanation, or would that just make them angrier?” “Should I back off or continue to engage?” Asking yourself what you would like in a similar situation isn’t always helpful either; that question only helps you to know yourself better! Sometimes the best you can do is to have the intention and let God do the rest. TODAY'S READINGS: Ephesians 4:32—5:8; Luke 13:10-17 (479).

T , O 30, 2018 Start small

When Mother Teresa first went into the slums of Calcutta, she had little more than a patch of dirt in which to scrape the letters of the alphabet as a way of teaching children to read. Today, thousands of Missionaries of Charity, the community she founded, work around the world with the poorest of the poor. Dorothy Day started the Catholic Worker movement with only one house of hospitality. Many worthy efforts started with very little, sometimes only an idea, before growing into something great. So don’t run down your own humble ideas or projects, especially if they will make people’s lives better. You never know when that little seed will grow into a tree. TODAY'S READINGS: Ephesians 5:21-33; Luke 13:18-21 (480)

W , O 31, 2018 Saints don’t need scary costumes

At a Catholic elementary school in Chicago in the 1950s, students were expected to come to school on Halloween in costume. Cool! The catch: You had to be dressed as a saint! Definitely uncool. Who wants to walk to school past “the publics” looking like a dork? Still, the sisters had it right, even if their pedagogy was unappreciated. Today is All

Hallows Eve, the day before the day when we remember all the saints who have gone before us, canonized and no. We remember that they lived, searched for God, failed, and succeeded just as we do today, and maybe they had to do dorky things in school, too. TODAY'S READINGS: Ephesians 6:1-9; Luke 13:22-30 (481)

T , N 01, 2018 SOLEMNITY OF ALL SAINTS

Let your sainthood shine! Genesis says people are made in the image and likeness of God. The gospels say to see Jesus in one another. In other words, we are more like God than we might think. We can see God, not completely, but a lot, in human beings. That’s what saints, whom the church celebrates today, do: They show us how to be close to God, how to be holy. They help us to see how God is like us and we are like God—and call us to be more like God, as they were. Answer that call. Imitate the saints. You can be one, too! TODAY'S READINGS: Revelation 7:2-4, 9-14; 1 John 3:1-3; Matthew 5:1-12a (667)

F , N 02, 2018 COMMEMORATION OF ALL THE FAITHFUL

DEPARTED (ALL SOULS’ DAY) Grace will bring you home

When we pray the Hail Mary, we ask for the help of Mary our Mother at two crucial moments of our lives: “now, and at the hour of our death.” Now is an important occasion because it is the time of decision. The hour of our death is critical because it’s the last moment over which we exercise our will. When we pray for the dead, today and every day, we come to the spiritual assistance of those who can no longer help themselves. We can rest assured that one day the church will be supplying us with the same grace. TODAY'S READINGS: Wisdom 3:1-9; Romans 5:5-11 or 6:3-9; John 6:37-40 (668)

S , N 03, 2018 MEMORIALS OF MARTIN DE PORRES, RELIGIOUS; BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

Sanctify the smallest deeds As the young Martin de Porres (1579-1639) began his vocation in Peru, he longed to bring his mission to foreign peoples so that he could receive the honor of martyrdom. When he realized that God was not going to make this possible, however, he turned his focus from exotic lands to the commonplace tasks he saw right in front of him. This “Brother of the Broom” worked to bring forth the kingdom of God within his abbey by becoming a master of homemaking. He looked after the cooking, cleaning, and laundry. A fellow brother recounted how Martin showed him how to sow chamomile in the “well-manured hoof-prints of cattle.” No task was too small that Martin couldn’t see God’s plan in it. Throughout the day, look at mundane tasks as saintly deeds. TODAY'S READINGS: Philippians 1:18b-26; Luke 14:1, 7-11 (484).

YOUTH MINISTRY Our Summer Mission Trip June 9-15, 2019

in Indianapolis,IN.

In 1998, St. Edna Youth Ministry paired with the organization Catholic Heart Work Camp. Since then, this summer trip has become an important annual event in our Youth Ministry. In all St. Edna Parish has had an estimated 525 campers and 100 adults working to help people maintain their dignity, and their homes. Camp in 2019 will be St. Edna's 21st year of partnering with CHWC for our week of service. What do we do at Camp? We join people from other Catholic Parishes (usually 300 people at a Camp) and paint, plant, weed, sort, clean, serve, and do repairs in homes, shelters, daycare centers, playgrounds, Churches, outreach centers, and anywhere else we are sent. (Local social service agencies pre-select our clients.) We will not know what next summer's projects will be....those plans are in God's hands and the hands of the local social service agencies. Where is Camp this year? We will be traveling to Indianapolis, Indiana next summer. This area is a socially diverse community. This is the first year CHWC is having a camp in Indy and we are excited to be part of this new site. Fill out this form for preliminary registration in this year’s camp.

Remember, Camp spots are on a first come basis. Spots fill quickly, so do not delay! This year the fee will be $465. Include your deposit of $125 with this form to hold your spot on this year’s Mission Trip. (Note that this deposit in non-refundable.)

Stewardship Bulletin Reflection: October 28, 2018 — Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

JER 31:7-9; PS 126:1-6; HEB 5:1-6; MK 10:46-52

As Christian stewards we are called to devote a regular portion of our time to God in prayer. Perhaps we find it intimidating to find the right words when approaching our perfect and all-holy God. Today’s Gospel shows us we need to have our “act together” before we can spend time with Him in prayer. In this passage from Mark, we see that Bartimaeus received a powerful answer to prayer at a very low point in his life. There, he sat, begging at the side of the road in a very undignified manner. His posture wasn’t exactly reverent, and his prayer wasn’t eloquent, just a desperate, “Jesus, son of David, have pity on me.” But it was a sincere cry from his heart. And Jesus, though surrounded by a sizable crowd, heard it, and called for Bartimaeus to come to Him. Folks from the crowd called to Bartimaeus, “Take courage; get up, Jesus is calling you.” And right there on the spot, Bartimaeus experienced a profound moment of personal encounter with our Lord and the healing of his vision he desired. How simple it is to encounter Jesus! All we must do is reach out to Him in prayer and we can be assured that He will hear us and call us to Himself. So let’s all take courage this week knowing that Jesus is calling us right now to spend time with Him just as we are, in all our weakness and brokenness. Tell Him, the great High Priest, what your needs are and then, like Bartimaeus, follow Him, and keep on keeping on in this stewardship way of life. It’s a life with the ultimate happy ending.

Human Concerns www.stedna.org/humanconcerns

This past summer we asked you, the parishioners of St. Edna, for items requested by chaplains in Illinois prisons. Your wonderful donations resulted in: 201 Bibles 324 Religious books 2 large boxes of religious items 148 decks of playing cards 2000 all occasion cards

We mailed the items per request to Centralia, Big Muddy, Logan, Lincoln, Robinson, Lawrence and Vienna Correctional Centers. All were pleased and grateful for what they received. Our church has become known as a caring and compassionate community. We thank you for supporting this ministry! If you would be interested in learning more about us or joining our group, please call June Hoogenboom at 847-398-1397.

St. Edna Prison Ministry

Facts: U.S. has the highest prison rate in the entire world. There are more jails here than colleges. Incarceration costs taxpayers almost $70 billion annually. Source: Freedomworks 2015

Development Assistance Ministry The Habit for Humanity, local affiliate Spring of Life, is building a house in Carpentersville and has developed a schedule of work opportunities for DAM. They are Oct 6, Nov 10, and, Dec 8 all Saturdays. The work day starts at 8:00 and continues thru 2:30/3:00. The work encompasses installing the insulation, trim, painting, and whatever it takes to finish the house. Lunch is provided on a rotating basis by one of the affiliated churches. Those interested should contact either Bob Ruffatto [email protected] or Tarry Hoskins [email protected]

Thank You to the Kairos Cookie Bakers There were many parishioners baking up a storm recently as we received 109 dozen cookies which were given to the Kairos Prison Team. We greatly appreciate the cookies and the prayers.

The Kairos team held the three day retreat at Stateville prison and it was a great success, thanks in part to the cookie effort.

There is a three year waiting list to attend these retreats. The inmates may come for the homemade cookies but they stay to hear the word of the Lord.

You have helped to make a difference through your support of this wonderful ministry. We thank you for hearing God’s word also.

GIFT OF LOVE SIGN-UP THIS WEEKEND

Imagine a Christmas without a festive holiday meal or gifts to exchange with family and friends. This is something most St. Edna parishioners will never have to experience. Others are not as fortunate. Some people in our sharing parish, St. James in Chicago, and even in the prosperous northwest suburbs, face a bleak and cheerless Christmas. After all of the Masses this weekend, and November 3rd and 4th, the Gift of Love Committee will be in the Community Room to sign up parishioners who want to sponsor a disadvantaged family or individual for the Christmas holiday. This is a wonderful opportunity to share with those who have little in the way of material goods.

We ask that you provide a gift for each family member or individual, plus a Jewel food certificate and enough non-perishable groceries for their Christmas meal. The gifts and food are to be dropped off on Saturday, December 1st from 8:00 A.M. to 10:00 A.M. in the Doherty Center. The Gift of Love Committee will provide you with gift suggestions and clothing sizes and ages of the family members or individual you have chosen. You will also receive instructions on how to label, wrap and pack the gifts and food.

If you need more information about the Gift of Love, please call Genelle at 847-705-7654.

St. Edna Sharing Parish Ministry to St. James I am looking for help with this ministry. My wife has been ill and is no longer able to assist with this ministry. At this time, I cannot attend the monthly meetings.

The Ideal Ministers:

A retired couple in reasonably good physical shape with the desire and drive to help the poor and the hungry. Good physical shape is important because the ministry involves lifting and loading bags and boxes of food. Carts and bins loaded with food are heavy. We do not want our ministers to get hurt. A retired couple (or individual) has the time to attend the monthly meeting. It is necessary to leave Arlington Heights at about 4:00 PM to get to the 6:00 PM St. James meeting.

If you are interested in finding out more and getting involved in the St. Edna Sharing Parish Ministry with St. James, lets get together and talk.

Donations for the Homeless

Our sharing parish, St. James in Chicago has a special request this holiday season. St. James would like to distribute “care packages” for the homeless.

They are seeking 100 of each of the following items: New or “gently used”: Hats, gloves, scarves, blankets (any size)

& New: socks, hygiene products $10 gift cards for Wendy’s McDonalds or White Castle

(St James will organize the items into individual bags for those in need.)

Please consider donating any of these items!

Collection boxes will be in the Narthex November 3-17th

Your help with this community service project is greatly appreciated.
