SAINT GABRIEL THE ARCHANGEL SADDLE RIVER
“Appearances can be deceiving,” as the saying goes. As
we celebrate the epiphania, the “appearing” of the eternal Word
of God on earth, this is still true.
What rapturous foresight must have filled Isaiah as he
wrote the words we hear today. How, for four hundred years, they
must have filled the hearts of the people of Israel with hope for
the day when God’s glory would shine on them. How deceived
some must have felt when the glory of God came to them in the
lowliest and humblest of human lives.
We have many expectations about how the divine pres-
ence will appear among us. But we can also set ourselves up,
through these expectations, to miss the divine glory when it truly
appears. We get caught up in looking for the star, forgetting that
the star is not the divine sign, the babe is. It may take a persistent
journey for us to come upon the true appearance of God’s glory
in our lives: Jesus Christ.
Happy New Year!
Fr. Frank
Thank You On behalf of the entire staff, I wish you all the peace and bless-
ings of the New Year! I also take this opportunity to thank all of
you who remembered us with cards, gifts and goodies this Christ-
mas. May God bless you for your thoughtfulness and generosity.
A New Year's Mass Resolutions The following note appeared in another church bulletin. I thought
it was good to share with you.
Please come to Mass early enough not to disrupt. Leave late
enough not to insult (Mass does not end until the final bless-
ing). Worship reverently enough not to distract. And dress
proudly enough not to offend.

CHANGE IN DAILY MASS SCHEDULE
Beginning in January, 2016, we will no longer have a 12 Noon
Mass on Mondays and Fridays. When there were two priests in
the parish there was no problem in covering two Masses a day.
Now that Fr. Frank is the only priest here during the week it is not
feasible to offer a noon Mass right in the middle of the day when
he may be called out on sick calls or anointings. And then when
he has a funeral Mass on those days, he does not then have
enough time to get back from the cemetery. It is too difficult to
find another priest on such short notice. We ask for your kind
understanding in this matter. There is always the 9:00 AM Mass.
We will continue having the 6:30 and 9:00 AM Masses on Tues-
day, Wednesday and Thursday.

tured yet informal, and they usually con-
sist of a discussion topic, group dynamics, prayer, and socializ-
ing. Feel free to bring a friend along with you. Whether you’ve
been involved in our program before or not, you are always wel-
come to attend our meetings. Refreshments are served.

Bless you and your family for your continued support.
WINTER BEREAVEMENT GROUP
'Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.’
When someone we love has been taken from us, we often find
ourselves dealing with change and transition. Many offer their
help, but do not always understand the loss we are feeling. Be-
reavement support groups are one way to find support from others
who are going through the same process. We cannot go around
the grief process, over it, or under it. We need to go through it;
we need to be good to ourselves, putting balance into our lives
through prayer, reading, resting, relaxation and work. Grief takes
time. Unrealistic expectations undermine the healing process.
The parishes of St. Gabriel, St. Catharine are Our Lady of Mt.
Carmel are jointly sponsoring a Bereavement Support
Group. You need not be a parishioner to attend. The group will
meet on Thursday afternoons from 1-2:30pm and will run for
eight consecutive weeks beginning on January 28 and ending on
March 17.Pre-registration is required - please contact Sr. Esther
Falzone at 201-327-5663 x305 or Annette Gallagher at 201-612-
4660. All calls are confidential.
YEAR OF MERCY
On Sunday, Dec. 13, Archbishop Myers
opened the Holy Door at the Cathedral Ba-
silica of the Sacred Heart in Newark.
Those who pass through the Holy Door
during the Jubilee Year and fulfill specific
conditions will be granted a Plenary Indul-
gence. What is a Plenary Indulgence? A
plenary indulgence is the remission of all
punishment due for the sins committed up to that time. In addi-
tion, the individual must be in the state of grace; have the disposi-
tion of complete detachment from sin; go to confession; receive
Communion; and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father.
MUSIC MINISTRY RECORDING
The Music Ministry is pleased to announce the release of their
third CD, Be Thou My Vision. This work was made possible by a
generous grant from the Marjorie Bunnell Charitable Trust and
contains a colorful arrangement of our favorite hymns performed
by our choirs as well as by Stacie Yao on our glorious Kegg pipe
organ. As part of the grant, every family is entitled to one. We
hope you enjoy it and play it often!”
BOX TOPS FOR ST. MICHAEL’S
St. Gabriel's continues to collect Box
Tops for St. Michael's School in New-
ark. The Box Top program is one of
the nation’s largest school fundraising
loyalty programs and has been helping
schools succeed since 1996. With over
250 participating products, it’s an easy way for schools to earn
cash for the things they need. The coupons are on products we
buy at our local supermarkets everyday. St. Michael's will be able
to use the Box Tops cash to buy whatever they need most, from
books to supplies and other school programs. So please look for
these coupons on your groceries and start to clip. There is a col-
lection box display in the lobby of the church. As always, thank
you for your support of St. Michael's.
