15th Sunday of Ordinary Time The mayor of a small town gave a speech about making
the city better, one citizen at a time, block by block. A
few men in our neighborhood took it seriously and be-
gan to clean up litter, tidy up a vacant lot and start a
neighborhood watch program. Their motto was, “If you
want a better neighborhood, be a better neighbor!” Their
efforts were contagious and the neighborhood not only
looked better, but it became a better place to live.
The Parable of the Good Samaritan is about loving oth-
ers as God loves. There are no limits or restrictions. It’s
just one person—one neighbor—helping another, with-
out regard for nationality, language or religion. We are
all members of the same human family, all created by
the same loving God. We cannot claim to be people of
love if we fail to practice what we claim.
How do we become the Good Samaritan? Try random
acts of kindness. Be more patient in traffic—even leav-
ing the church! Give someone a helping hand. Buy
someone’s lunch—anonymously. Send a thank you note.
Forgive a debt—or a grudge. Call someone who needs a
friend. Pray a little more. Make a good confession. Prac-
tice Lent in July. If you want a better Church, or if you
want a deeper faith, work to be a better believer!
