SAINT THERESA OF AVILA WEST ROXBURY, MASSACHUSETTS
SPRING BREAK A NOTE FROM MONSIGNOR HELMICK
During the recent Spring vacation, 14 high school students-- - members of Saint Theresa’s Peer Ministry, made a mission trip to Bogalusa, New Orleans, to help people whose homes had been severely damaged and destroyed, to repair or start rebuilding their homes. Bogalusa is a town in the Archdiocese of New Orleans. This trip was organ-ized by our own Ellen Klein, who is the Director of Religious Education for Grades 7-10 for our parish, the Director of Peer Ministry, and the Director of our Confirmation Preparation Program. She was accompanied on this trip by Bill Stockwell and Kris Jerome, who made themselves available to be with and to assist our kids.
The kids were very busy all the time, repairing, painting, cleaning, ripping up staples and rugs, joint compounding and sanding, installing mop and toe boards, and installing cabinet handles, and patching holes in walls, in the after-math of Hurricane Harvey lat summer. They also had daily Mass, prayer-time, and some fun- - - including a tour of New Orleans. They were gratefully received by the people they had gone to Louisiana to help. They got a very realis-tic view of how ordinary people can find themselves suddenly, without any warning, in intense and distressing situa-tions. These kids responded to our Lord’s call to “love one another as I have loved you!”
One of the unexpected benefits of the visit to New Orleans was to meet briefly with Archbishop Alfred Hughes, the Archbishop of New Orleans Emeritus (Retired). I had called him the very day the kids left Boston, and told him that a group of teen-agers from Saint Theresa’s Parish was on a mission of mercy and charity to his Archdiocese. I called Archbishop Hughes because he is a native son of Saint Theresa of Avila Parish He grew up on Clement Avenue, was baptized in Saint Theresa’s Church, where he also made his First Holy Communion and Confirmation. He entered the Seminary from here, and was Ordained to the Priesthood in Rome after his studies in Theology at the Pontifical Gre-gorian University in Rome. He served as a Priest in our Archdiocese, was a faculty member and the Rector of Saint John’s Seminary, was the Auxiliary Bishop of Boston, them the Bishop of Baton Rouge, and finally, the Archbishop of New Orleans. Among the many wonderful things he did were to get Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of New Orleans opened within three weeks of Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and invited the public school kids to go to the Catho-lic Schools until the public schools could be re-opened. At the age of 86, Archbishop Hughes, in his retirement, is teaching Theology at Notre Dame Seminary.
I knew he would want to see the kids from his home parish, and he did. They met in a nearby building at Saint Louis Cathedral, and he spoke briefly to them, thanked them for their visit to help people in his Archdiocese, reminisced a bit about Saint Theresa Parish, and gave them his blessing. This all gave the kids and the Archbishop a sense of the unity of our Faith in Christ, the Unity of the Church, and the common effort of the Church to keep that commandment of charity, in West Roxbury or in Bogalusa: “Love one another as I have loved you.” On the next page of this Bulletin, you will see a photograph of Archbishop Hughes with the kids, Kris Jerome, and Bill Stockwell.

The Catholic Appeal As of Friday, May 11, parishioners of Saint Theresa’s have contributed $67,603.00, which is 82% of our assigned goal of $82,641 for this year. If you would like to contribute to the 2018 Catholic Appeal, the blue en-velopes are available in the pews, at the doors of the Church, and in the Pavilion as you leave Mass today. You may return the envelopes in the Offertory collection, by mail, or in person, at the rectory. We are at the halfway point of the Catholic Appeal, and I really appreciate your gener-osity. The Appeal Office has a policy of not giving a rebate to any Par-ish which does not reach its assigned goal. Our goal at Saint Theresa’s is $82,641 and we have arrived at $65,468 thanks to all of you who have contributed. And so, we are $15,038 short, which means that we will not be eligible for a rebate. And so, I am hoping and praying that anyone who has not yet made a contribution will find a way to make one very soon so we will get to our assigned goal and be eligible for a rebate from the Archdiocese. The rebate will help Saint Theresa’s Parish to pay our bills.

Father Michael Drea Father Michael Drea, a Priest of the Archdiocese of Boston who was ordained by Cardinal O’Malley in 2004, is now a resident of Saint Theresa’s Rectory. Father Drea was assigned as a newly ordained Priest to Saint Ann’s Parish in Wollaston. After a few years, he was appointed Pastor of Saint Paul’s Parish in Cambridge, where he was also the Chaplain of Harvard Catholic Center and the Archdiocesan Choir School. More recently, he has been the Pastor of Saint Brendan’s Parish and Saint Ann’s Parish in Dorchester. His Eminence, Cardinal O’Malley, has now appointed Father Drea to be the National Chaplain for Mission Development of FOCUS, the Fellowship of Catholic Univer-sity Students. This organization is a national organization aimed at strengthening the Faith of Catholic students on university and college campuses all over the United States - - - a truly noble task. Father Drea- - - rhymes with Shea- - - is most welcome here at Saint Theresa’s. As you can well imagine, he will be spending a lot of time on airplanes, getting to and from university and college campuses all over the country- - most of which campuses will be be secular and not Catholic, but will have an abundance of Catholic students who will benefit from the work and ministry of Father Drea and FOCUS.
