As we celebrate Labor Day Weekend (the traditional “end of the summer”), let us give thanks for the gift of work. According to the United States Department of Labor, “the first Labor Day was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5th, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5th, 1883.

In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a “workingpersons’ holiday” on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country.”

The celebration of Labor Day spread throughout the United States, and the date changed from September 5th to the first Monday in September. Finally, Congress passed an act creating the national holiday, Labor Day, on June 28th, 1894.

As we observe Labor Day Weekend and Labor Day, amid all the parades, picnics, and celebrations, let us remember those who are unemployed, underemployed, and those who are entering or re-entering the work force. Following

our Catholic Social Teaching, let us work and pray for economic justice and the affirmation of worker’s rights.

Here at St. Therese, we strive to be a just employer by how we treat our parish employees (staff) with salaries and benefits. Thanks to our Personnel Committee, our Finance Council, and our Parish Pastoral Council for implementing best personnel and wage practices for our staff. Thanks also to all who support the parish by faithful and consistent financial stewardship, as we can only staff the parish to the extent that we have the financial resources to pay just salaries and benefits.

September brings much activity here at the parish! Next weekend (September 10th/11th) we will have the Greater Tosa Interfaith Mum Sale and our monthly Sharing Sunday. We also resume our catechetical ministry programs that weekend. The following weekend (September 17th/18th) we will celebrate Catechetical Sunday, and the last weekend of the month (September 24th/25th) we will begin our Parish Stewardship Commitment.

Have a safe, enjoyable, and peaceful holiday!

God bless you!

September 4th, 2016 23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Join the St. Therese Music Ministry

If you play an instrument and would like to become part of the St. Therese music ministry, please let us know. All are welcome.

Additionally, we’d like to form a recorder consort to play Christmas and Easter. The recorder is the instrument you may have learned in the 4th grade, or you may remember the Von Trapp Family playing recorder ensembles. It is fairly easy and is considered to be “early music.” We have several kinds here at the church. If enough are interested, we will set up some times to practice. If you want more information, or an informal lesson to see if it’s something you might want to try, please contact Mary Radspinner at (414) 771-2500 x15 or [email protected]

Join the Canticle Choir

You are invited to join the St. Therese Canticle Choir. The main ministry of the Canticle Choir is providing the musical leadership for funerals. We’ll offer soothing harmony as our ministry through psalms, hymns and anthems. We will also touch on a small amount of chant music. On occasion we’ll lead the Saturday liturgy. We gather on the first and third Thursdays of the month from 1:00PM–2:30PM beginning September 1st.

This is a supportive group and there are no auditions. For more information please contact Mary Radspinner at [email protected] or (414) 771-2500 ext. 15

2016 Building Bridges Partnership Picnic Please join us for the 2016 Building Bridges Partnership Picnic hosted by St. Therese, Martin Luther and the Mennonite Church. It will be held on Sunday September 18th from 11:30AM–2:00PM at the Cannon Park Pavilion. There will be gift bags for the children, hot dogs and hamburgers, refreshments and fun for all. Please bring a dish to pass. Our outreach ministry will be back to school supplies for the children at Burbank School, which should be brought the day of the picnic. Please fill out the registration below and place in the collection basket. If you have any questions, please contact Kathy Hubrich (414) 259-1961. All are welcome!! Hope to see you there!

55+ Social Club

Join us for our next meeting on Thursday, September 8th. Pot luck lunch will be served at 11:30AM. A–H Dessert, I–M Salad, and N–Z main dish. Please call Pat D’Amore at (414) 771-4194, Judy Rahn at (414) 475-6809 or Rosina Sorvari at (262) 782-1966 to RSVP by Monday, September 5th.

News from the St. Vincent de Paul Society The St. Vincent de Paul Society recently celebrated the 200th anniversary of the birth of its founder, Frederic Ozanam. As a college student, Frederic led a small group of his classmates into the

poor areas of Paris to help the people living there obtain food, clothing and better housing. This model of assistance spread through Europe and arrived in our Archdiocese in 1849.

Our parish conference is 1 of 53 conferences in the Milwaukee Archdiocese. Volunteers in these 53 conferences contacted 240,000 people in need last year. September is SVDP Awareness Month. We encourage everyone to consider becoming part of this arm of the Church’s ministry.

Parish Bereavement Ministry Seminar

Join us in learning more about Parish Bereavement Ministry on Wednesday, September 14th from 8:30AM to 12:00PM at the Archbishop Cousins Catholic Center (3501 South Lake Drive, St. Francis). Build your parish’s bereavement program or learn new ways to grow your existing ministry. Whether you have an established bereavement ministry, are beginning a ministry, are just thinking about a bereavement ministry, or have parish members you want to train, please join us for this comprehensive morning.

For more information, visit http://tinyurl.com/LifeAfterLoss-MKE-2016. This training is FREE, but an RSVP is required. Handouts will be provided; a comprehensive bereavement ministry manual is available for purchase through the John Paul II Center for the New Evangelization at a nominal cost.

Doorways to Scripture

Join Sr. Bea Dorsey, SSSF for Doorways to Scripture - Considering Peace this fall. Peace...What is it like? How does it come? Has it ever been? Will it ever be? This series will address these questions from a Christian perspective. We will reflect on what Scripture says about peace, how Christian Mennonites, who place peace at the center of their tradition, appropriate these scriptural roots, enter the dialogue between Mennonites and Catholics, and finally, respond to the legacy of Daniel Berrigan’s extraordinary commitment to peacemaking.

Sessions will be held in Clare Hall 105 on the Alverno College Campus (3335 S. 39th St, Milwaukee) from 9:30AM to 11:30AM on the following Saturday mornings: September 17th, October 25th, October 29th, November 12th, and November 26th. The cost is $20 per session or $100 for the series. Contact Heather Goeden in the Parish Office for a registration form.

Volunteer Communion Ministers Needed

The Spiritual Services Department of Froedtert Hospital is seeking additional volunteer Communion Ministers who would like to be involved in the sacred and meaningful work of bringing Communion to Catholic patients. Being a regular Communion Minister requires approximately one to two hours per week. We are also seeking substitute Communion Ministers who would fill in for those who are away. If you would like to become a part of this fulfilling ministry, please contact Sister Helen Harry at (414) 805-4663.

Jubilee Celebration for Married Couples The annual Archdiocesan Jubilee Celebration honoring those celebrating their 25th (silver) or 50th (golden) wedding anniversary is Saturday, September 24th, beginning at 10:00AM at St. Joseph Parish (12130 W Center St., Wauwatosa). Couples married over 50 years are also welcome to attend. A reception will follow the Liturgy. The cost is $40.00 per couple and includes a commemorative certificate and a professional photo. Registration is required. For more information, please call (414) 758-2201. Visit http://tinyurl.com/2016Jubilee-MKE to print a flyer with registration form.

A Vision For the Future: Evangelization and the Sunday Mass

As parishes and as the Church, we need to move from “maintenance to mission” and realize it is a new day in how we reach out and welcome others. This program will build upon the recently released resource, “A Vision for the Future: Evangelization and the Sunday Mass.”

Please join us either on Friday, September 30th or Saturday, October 1st from 8:30am to 12:30pm at the Archbishop Cousins Catholic Center (3501 S. Lake Dr., St. Francis). Both of these days are meant for leaders, parishes are encouraged to bring a team. Leaders who may find this helpful include:

Parish Staff Members - pastoral, administrative and support staff

Parish Volunteer Leaders - council (pastoral and finance), commission/committee chairpersons and members, Synod Delegates and Synod Contact Persons

Leaders of Catholic Organizations (other than parishes)

Registration Information can be found at www.archmil.org/LeadershipGatherings2016.htm. If you have any questions, please contact Rosalita Villa, [email protected] or (414) 758-2217.

Sincerely,

Mum’s the Word

On the weekend of September 10th/11th the Interfaith Older Adults Programs Greater Tosa office will be selling potted chrysanthemums after our Saturday and Sunday masses. The flowers are in 8-inch pots and sell for $7.00 each. These beautiful plants are great for Altar Flowers, Memorials, fall gardens or as a gift. All profits will go directly to maintaining Greater Tosa Interfaith Neighborhood Outreach which is a program supporting older neighbors to allow for greater independence. Our congregation supports this program. If you have any questions call the Greater Tosa Interfaith office at (414) 453-8750.
