LITURGICAL MINISTERS FOR NOVEMBER 17 & 18, 2018
GOSPEL MEDITATION
November 11, 2018 32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time
In 1 Samuel, God advises the prophet
Samuel not to observe as men see but as
God sees. He tells him to "look to the
heart." This is the movement of this
Sunday's Gospel reading. "Beware the
scribes," Jesus advises. He points out
their public greetings and "seats of honor," which stands in sharp
contrast to their private greed. For the Jewish people of Jesus'
day, honor resides at the top. Power and prestige created a high
profile back then as it still does today. After his warning, Jesus
turns his disciples' attention elsewhere: a poor widow.
"She, from her poverty, has contributed all she had." While the
scribes donated large sums to the temple, they did so "from their
surplus wealth." This woman—in her faith and devotion—offers
"her whole livelihood." Jesus invited his disciples to see with
God's eyes, to recognize a holy life in people the world
overlooks. Here—in the poor, the vulnerable, the marginalized—
God waits hidden.
Today's Gospel begs a few questions. What do we see? Whom
do we value? Are we impressed by the pomp and circumstance
of modern day Pharisees? Do we ignore their self-righteousness
because it looks impressive, even seems somewhat helpful? The
point isn't to judge the scribes, of course. God can see their
hearts as well, and those assessments are firmly his
responsibility. The point is to turn our eyes from the typically
honored to the rarely respected. Are we disinterested in the
poverty of the modern day widows? Do we ignore their faith
because we forget to look for it? This Sunday, consider the
widows in your own life. Who can you see with God's eyes?

Souls and Gratitude for family life
A thankful heart is a heart that knows joy. Taking time as individuals and as a family to reflect on our blessings and to
thank others for their generosity and to reflect on God’s hand in our lives allowing joy to flow from our hearts and being.
The more joy that we know the more that peace overtakes us. A joyful heart, even on the darkest days find the blessings of
God. This November create a Gratitude Box that helps to foster these values in your family and home. Find a reasonable
size box with a lid, a rectangle box work best...Find two small blank journals...One will become the family Gratitude book
and the other will be the Gratitude tracker/thank you book. Keep stamps, thank you cards, note cards, stickers, etc. in the
box with the thank you book
Using one of these scriptures or one that is your favorite related to gratitude: James 1:17, Psalm 100:4,Colossians 4:2,
Philippians 4:6
Every week when you are able to have a family dinner, after everyone has finished eating, share
something that each member is grateful for this week/day. Write down the gratitude thoughts in your
family book. In the thanks book, write down events, situations, people that need a “thank you”. Write
out thank you notes during this time, this weekly practice keeps everyone up to date on thank you’s
that are needed and with weekly attention growing this virtue of thankfulness.

STAYING HEALTHY: Now that we are more than half way through the season of
Autumn, the days are getting noticeably shorter and the weather is getting noticeably cooler (and
lately, more damp). With the change in seasons, and winter around the corner, we are getting into
that time of year when more people seem to contend with colds and flu. Since our greatest form of
prayer as a Catholic Christian people involves coming together as one large group in one large room for
the Mass, it would be good if all of us were mindful of some practices that limit the spread of some
seasonal illnesses.
Hopefully, we all know to cover our mouth when we cough or sneeze, avoid touching our nose and mouth,
frequently wash our hands, etc., but sometimes little ones need frequent reminders in order to form good habits.
Additionally, though, when it comes to gathering as a large group to celebrate the Mass, there are other things we can do
that will help:
(1) It’s always a good idea to carry tissues or a clean handkerchief to cover one’s nose and mouth during a sneeze or
cough, but then please be careful to through away your own used tissues (don’t leave them in the pew or on the floor
where someone else might have contact with them). If you don’t have a tissue, there is less chance of spreading illness if
you bend your arm and cough or sneeze into your elbow, than if you sneeze into your hand.
(2) It is certainly important that we strive to be a welcoming, friendly community. However, while the handshake is
a typical sign of greeting it is not the ONLY one. Whether greeting someone before and/or after Mass (even the priest or
deacon on the way out of Church) or exchanging the sign of peace, there are alternative (and hygienic) forms of
acknowledgment that one can use, such as: eye contact with a warm smile or nod of the head; a friendly “hello,” “peace
be with you,” or “have a nice day”; or a hand on another’s shoulder. We all need to be considerate of the sensitivities of
others who may not want to shake hands at this time. (Some people find it helpful to carry hand-sanitizer in their car,
pocket or purse to use shortly after being in crowds. Plus, we have dispensers in the main entryway of the church.)
With reasonable care, and a few simple do’s and don'ts we should all be able to get through this cold and flu season
healthy AND holy!!
A Prayer for Veterans
Heavenly Father, King and Lord,
You instill in all of Your creation
an order and value.
You call Your children "very good."
We surrender to You the conflicts
that tear your family apart.
We pray for an end to blindness
that places pride, greed, power, and
selfishness above human dignity
and brotherly love.
We pray in gratitude for all of those
who have defended peace, virtue,
and justice with honor.
We pray especially for those
who have suffered in mind and body
from the ravages of war.
Let Your Kingdom come!
May Your peace that surpasses all
understanding reign in our hearts
and in our world. Amen.

2ND COLLECTION NEXT WEEKEND
The Annual Collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious will be held in all
parishes on November 17-18. Coordinated by the National Religious Retirement Office
(NRRO) in Washington, D.C., the annual appeal benefits 32,000 elderly Catholic sisters,
brothers and religious order priests whose religious congregations lack adequate
retirement funding. Women and men religious who serve or have served in the diocese
but whose communities are based elsewhere may also benefit from the annual appeal.
Roughly 94 cents of every dollar aids senior religious. Despite this generosity, many
religious communities still struggle to provide for aging members. Traditionally,
Catholic sisters, brothers and religious order priests—known collectively as
“religious”—served for small stipends that did not include retirement benefits. Today,
hundreds of religious communities lack sufficient retirement savings. Compounding the
funding shortage are the rising cost of care and the decrease in income that has resulted
from the declining number of religious able to serve in compensated ministry. In
addition to providing assistance for day-to-day needs, collection proceeds underwrite
initiatives to help religious communities address the factors underlying their retirement
shortfalls. These efforts have facilitated solutions such as collaborative care facilities,
strategic partnerships with health-care providers and numerous cost-saving measures.

2018 GIVING TREE
PROJECT
We are most grateful to all
those who participated in
this project last year. We are
blessed to be a part of such a
caring parish family.
The Giving Tree is located in
the vestibule of the Church.
Attached to the tree are paper
Christmas ornaments with our
code and suggestions for
gifts. A few items will be identified, but it is not
necessary to purchase all that are listed.
Whichever tag you select please put it in a safe
place and jot down the information just in case it
is misplaced. After you purchase the gift and wrap
it, please attach the tag securely on the gift or
gifts, this aids in the sorting and distribution
process.
Gifts for Auberle ask that you DO NOT wrap
the gifts that you buy, but you may place them
in a gift bag.
You may bring the gifts to church as soon as
you have them. Gifts MUST be returned by
December 5th.
May Jesus and His Blessed Mother bless each
of you abundantly.
