Good Friday’s collection for the Holy Land is, in the words of Paul VI “not only for the Holy Places but above all for those pastoral, charitable, educational, and social works which the Church supports in the Holy Land for the welfare of their Christian brethren and of the local communities.”

All registered parishioners should have received a Holy Week/Easter mailing with our Mass schedule. If you haven’t registered yet please do so on line at www.stthomasaquinas.com or by completing a registration form located at the entrances of the church and chapel. The Mass schedule for Holy Week and Easter is posted on the cover of this week’s bulletin.

Palm Sunday is the day when we remember Jesus’ entry into the city of Jerusalem, and the great joy that it evoked in the people. Like them we are starting the Masses this week with a procession entering into God’s house with palm branches waving with joy.

Yet, within the same Mass, we have the Passion readings, where we hear about how, while the supporters of Jesus return to their homes and focus on preparing for the feats, his op-ponents use the opportunity to secretly arrest and condemn the Lord. The crowds of his follow-ers are suddenly surprised to see the Messiah they had been expecting to lead them in over-coming their enemies, instead be carrying a cross up to the place of crucifixion. They felt lost and confused, and scattered into hiding until the resurrection of Christ made the events of the Passion finally make sense to them.

It is so easy for us to fall into the same situation, celebrating the Lord’s entry into our hearts today with joy, but then let all the stress and busyness of our lives turn our minds and hearts away from what God wants to do with our lives in the next two weeks. If we do that, it is so easy for the graces of the season to get away from us and we can find ourselves surprised to see Easter go by without us experiencing the closeness to God that we had expected.

So welcome to Palm Sunday, let us celebrate Jesus’ triumphant entry into his house, but let us celebrate it as it truly is, the start of holy week. It should be a special week where we are particularly aware of God’s love for us, and when we are working to let go of sin and grow in grace and love. If we do that, this Easter will be a particularly joyful and fulfilling one, because all the distractions trying to steal Jesus away from us will not have an opportunity to strike while we are focused on all the things competing with the Lord for our attention.

Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston

On Tuesday, March 31 , there will be no 9am Mass since Fr. Bill and Fr. Adrian will both be attend-ing the Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston. The Chrism Mass is a special occa-sion when all the priests of the Archdiocese gather with Cardinal Seán to renew our promises of prayer, obedience, and celibacy. The cardinal also blesses the oils that we use throughout the year; the Oil of Catechumens we use in Baptism, the Oil of the Sick we use in the Anointing of the Sick, and Chrism which is a symbol of permanence that we use during Baptisms and Confirmations. These oils are then distributed to the different parishes, and we bring bottles of each of those oils that we then use for the whole year until we get new sets during the following year’s Chrism Mass. It is a beautiful reminder of our unity as the Church of Boston and of our connection to the cardinal.

The Fruitful Homily

I believe it is the task of the homilist to give away the keys to the Sacred Scripture, to challenge and provoke the multi-tude to ask, seek, & knock. For me, the gift of the homilist has been contemplation.

I heard my first memorable homily at age 9, and interestingly, it was not the intended homily. We were seated in metal folding chairs, attending Mass in the parish gymnasium, when my baby brother escaped into the make-shift isle as our young priest was finishing his intended homily. Seeing the toddler, our parochial vicar crouched down with arms thrown wide and a grin on his face, which was all the invitation my brother needed to charge into his welcoming arms.

As my mother shrank in her seat, the priest tucked my brother into one arm and proclaimed, “Suffer the little children to come unto me . . .” Then, with the child in his arms, the priest returned to the altar and continued with the Mass. My brother looked out at us with arms and hands curled in a shy posture at first, but later outstretched mimicking the priest’s gestures before being put down to return to our mother.

For many years, this singular demonstration of a single line of Scripture has provided food for reflection and opportunity to grow in wisdom and understanding. In the image of the priest holding the child, I have recognized: Christ the child and Christ the man; Joseph the protector and Joseph the doting; the praise of the innocent and worship of the mature; Christ the priest, Christ the servant and Christ the teacher.

Revisiting this memory has helped me order my religion as Jesus might, teaching me that although ritual is central to our faith, it is not the purpose of the faith. The purpose of our faith is to welcome the children of God with open arms and lift them up to God. The purpose of Mass is Communion . . . to unite the children to the Eternal Goodness by feed-ing them with the Eternal Word and the Eternal Sacrifice, for it is only through perfect union with Christ that the human spirit is capable of offering perfect and eternal praise.

Easter is a time when we all have the opportunity to extend welcoming and open arms to the children of God. Let’s all take some time to reflect on how we can be a welcoming presence to those returning to our faith community during Holy Week and throughout the Easter season.

Easter Collection

The only collection taken up on Easter is for the Clergy Benefit Trust which supports the priests of our archdiocese after their years of active service. This time of year reminds me of the priests that shaped my faith over the years. Perhaps you too can recall fond memories of the priests who have inspired you and touched your life in deep and meaningful ways. I invite you to join me in offering a gift in thanksgiving for these devoted and holy men with your gift to the Cler-gy Fund next week.

Divine Mercy Sunday

Sunday April 12 is Divine Mercy Sunday, a day to celebrate God’s infinite love and mercy for all of his children. As part of our parish commemoration of this beautiful feast we will be having a Divine Mercy Holy Hour in the upper church at 3pm on that Sunday. We will pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet and hear a reflection by Deacon Jerry Ryan, as well as having some time to adore the Lord in silence. Please consider joining us for this beautiful devotion.

Seventeenth Annual St. Thomas Aquinas Charity Golf Tournament

Believe it or not, golf season is almost upon us. The Seventeenth Annual St. Thomas Aquinas Charity Golf Tournament will be held May 8, 2015. Over the years, the total amount raised from the annual golf tournament is approximately $244,000. Through your tremendous generosity, last year a check was presented to Fr. Bill in the sum of $20,000 which was used to repair some of the stained glass windows

There will be a buffet, raffles and an auction immediately following the golf. If you wish to only attend the buffet, the cost is $30.00 per person. Donations for new raffle or auction items are appreciated.

For more details, you may contact Tom (508-889-2933), Steve (508-944-4272) or Mike (508-326-6355) Arrighi. In the past, the tournament has filled quickly, so we look forward to hearing from you.

The Office of Spiritual Life and the Office of Health Care Ministry offer Regional Mornings of Prayer for Pasto-ral Visitors and Eucharistic Ministers to the Sick "IN THE NAME OF JESUS OF NAZARETH"

Holy Family, Duxbury Saturday, April 18, 2015

Bringing Holy Communion to the Homebound There are a number of parishioners who are confined to their homes because of age or illness. We have a num-ber of Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion who are willing to bring Holy Communion to their home. Re-ceiving the Lord in the Eucharist will bring His grace and healing to them to let them know that the Lord is with them. Additionally the EMHC let those confined to their home know that they are very much part of our parish community. We also encourage those who are elderly or sick to avail themselves of the graces, strength and healing that comes from the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. If you have someone living in your home or know of anyone who would like to receive Holy Com-munion or be anointed please call the parish office.

Faith Formation What an accomplishment! We made it through a record winter and our faith formation classes are coming to a close. We’d like to thank our catechists and substitutes for their dedication to the children of our parish. Their work is not lim-ited to the one hour they volunteer; they also prepare lessons, and sometimes buy their own materials to supplement those lessons. They make time in their busy schedules because this ministry is a priority. They are the reason we have such a successful program. We cannot thank them enough.

In addition to a lesson, the last week of classes will include a craft and ice cream treat in the gym. Community is a ma-jor component of our faith, and it is a great experience for the students to come together and celebrate another year of growth in faith. The students will be making a craft to share with the homebound, the veterans, the inmates at Bridge-water State Hospital, and the residents at the Bridgewater Nursing Home. It is important for them to realize that they can make a difference in the lives of those around us.

Last Sunday our Confirmation students listened to a presentation given by Linda Thayer who taught science in the Bos-ton Public School system for 35 years. Her love of science brought her to believe in the miracle of birth and brought her back to her faith. Linda has been coming to this parish to talk to our students about the Respect Life movement for many years. She uses a slide show to visually show the scientific fact that life begins at the moment of conception. Linda’s presentation included a discussion about the word fetus which our society uses when it wants to make the idea of abortion acceptable. Fetus is a Latin word meaning “offspring” and so just means child or baby, when was the last time you were invited to a Fetus Shower? We appreciate Linda’s commitment to keeping the youth of our archdiocese informed about this important topic. She is a powerful witness to the truth. K & D !"#$
