Father Joe’s Notes My dear friends,
Last Saturday, I was making Mom a cake. Her favorite is
coconut angel food. I separated the eggs and was whisking
the whites. Nothing happened. I did the tricks one would do:
a pinch of salt and cream of tartar. I chilled the bowl. Any
time they’d froth and begin to come together, the whole thing
collapsed. (If it were Christmas, I’d have made
eggnog!) At a certain point, you realize the
proteins are so stretched that they won’t come
together; so, I dumped the mess and went about
my day. After the vigil Mass, I went back to try
again. I let the bowl and whisk sit in the freezer
for hours. I made sure there was no water or
anything else in the bowl. Finally, it happened
– egg whites beaten to stiff peaks! I managed
to bake the cake and Mom had a lovely dessert.
Monday morning, I grabbed the laundry and headed to the
basement. A handle snapped and the baskets fell on the
floor. Laundry and clothes hangers were scattered across the
hall. Great! This was going to make me late for morning
Mass. Well, I gathered up the pile, sorted things quickly,
shuffled the baskets, and grabbed them by the sides. I got to
the laundry room, put in the first load, and made it to Mass
with a few minutes to spare. Now laundry is happening.
After returning from a trip to the school and checking with
Heidi, I sat down to my computer. I opened up the letter I
had begun for the bulletin the previous night. As I read it, I
realized that it was just terrible! Ugh! What was I going to
do with this Mess? Well, I learned my lesson from the cake
and the laundry; just start all over again! (Thank the Lord for
the “delete” button.) Instead of driving myself crazy trying
to make a bad letter mediocre, I could just rethink it. There
was time to start over and be inspired to create something
fresh. That’s what I’m doing! Here it goes!
Why lock into something that isn’t salvageable. I’m
not speaking about facing a good thing in life where an
obstacle comes, or building a relationship that faces a crisis;
I’m talking about dealing with issues that just aren’t worth it.
My letter was not a problem that I could work around or
address; it was just wrong. In situations like that, it’s best to
put the mess aside, take some time, and then start anew.
How do we tell the difference? Wisdom is the key. We pray
to the Holy Spirit to enlighten us and guide us. There are
times it’s worth taking something that has a good core where
there’s a problem, and wrestling to make something beautiful
from it. There are times the center is lacking, and all the
effort in the world won’t make it come together.
Wisdom helps us understand the difference. Is
this something good that may be off today but
can be made better? If so, put in the hard work
and do it! Is this something that was bad from
the start and just won’t get better? If so, it might
be time to start from scratch. It need not be a
disaster. Some things can be repaired and some
need a new beginning. Who knew a baking
disaster would help someone grow in wisdom?!
Hopefully yours in Christ, Fr. Joe
Question: Father, did Judas Iscariot go to Hell?
Answer: Well, since I’m not there (and hope not to be), I
can’t answer that definitively! Dante’s Divine Comedy has
Judas in Hell’s center being consumed by the devil. That’s
literature, not Scripture or theology. The answer is harder
from that vantage. Judas was one of the Twelve, the one who
betrayed the Lord. In Scripture, we are always reminded of
that fact. It was a source of grief and shame to the early
believers that one of their own betrayed Christ. How could
he do it? Believers wrestled with this, and we still do today.
Each Gospel writer handled it differently. Mark makes very
little mention of him. Matthew has Judas confess remorse,
hurling the money into the temple. Luke claims the devil
entered in to possess Judas, making the treachery possible.
John depicts him as the holder of the money purse and a
greedy man. Did he commit suicide, did he just die, or did he
just vanish away from the crowds? We aren’t sure. We just
know for certain that he was a close follower of Jesus who
turned him into the authorities. Why? We’ll never know for
sure. What happened after is a bit of a mystery. What we
know is that he betrayed Jesus and vanished from the
Church, either from his despair or choice to be separate. Is
he condemned to Hell? That is up to Christ to decide. The
Lord forgave those who executed him, for they did not know
what they were doing. Did that include Judas? If so, did
Judas accept the forgiveness offered? I have to believe that
the Lord who came to reconcile all things to himself would
offer some change of repentance to Judas. Would Judas
accept? That I will never know until I meet the Lord myself.
