My dear friends,

This weekend, we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. As

we look at the Nativity set out for the Christmas season, we see

them there: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. The figures are always

beautiful and clean. We put them in the best settings with

poinsettias and other flowers and greens to decorate them. While

this is a great tradition, it isn’t very accurate. Their lives were

not pretty and perfect. They would have to flee their home as

refugees avoiding the murderous jealousy of King Herod. They

never rested in such splendid grandeur as we see in the crèche.

Their lives were quite different.

What was perfect and beautiful? Their love for one another

was. They were completely devoted to each other. Joseph may

not have been the biological father of Jesus, but they loved each

other no less than any father and son. Joseph and Mary clearly

had other plans for their lives, but neither lived in resentment of

the other or of God. Jesus was the Son of God, but he never let

that cause him to feel superior to Mary and Joseph, mere mortals.

They lived in a bond of perfect love and charity. That’s what we

celebrate in this feast.

Love makes a family. Whether we find ourselves in the

conventional nuclear family, or maybe we live united with close

friends who make our family, it’s love that binds us. The same is

true of our parish family. Your love for one another unites you.

Your charity for one another doesn’t stop at the doors of the

church, but extends to all people. Your generosity of heart was

clearly evident in the Christmas baskets you made and delivered.

Whether you dropped off turkeys or food, came to assemble the

packages going to families, or went to deliver them to the 200

households, you put love into action. You showed others, in

concrete ways, what love is. You did the same with gifts for the

giving tree that provided for people in need. That’s love, and

that’s a family.

United with the Holy Family: Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, we live

as a Christian family in God’s love. I thank you for all you do

and encourage you not to become disappointed or disillusioned

when life isn’t perfect or pretty. Mary and Joseph had changes of

plans and homes, they dealt with violence and hatred, but they

never let it stop them from loving each other or serving God. We

will face our own burdens and discouragements, but we need to

face them with hope. Let’s all follow the Holy Family’s example

and seek to live in peace with one another. Let’s be a family of

love. Let’s witness the power of the Holy Family for all to see

today!

Joyfully yours in Christ, Fr. Joe

PS – As one parish family, you are all welcome to come to the

rectory next weekend after Masses for the Epiphany. Come see

the place decorated for Christmas and gather as a family of God.

Coffee and…. will be served there on Saturday and Sunday. I

hope to welcome you all!
