Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time When a young couple undertook some major renovations to their home, they sought the help of their uncle who was a long retired carpenter. With an expert eye, he laid out the plan for their new addition. His mind could do what his hands could not, so they followed his instructions exactly and accomplished their dream. He led, they followed and success was close behind. Jesus instructs his disciples about discipleship, laying out for them a clear plan for following him. It was not a life of leisure, or of philosophy or debate. It was a life of service, sacrifice and selflessness. Being his disciple meant that they were not to see with the eyes of the world, but with the eyes of faith. They would recognize in others the image and like-ness of God which made them more alike than different. If we are to be true believers, then we need the expert eye of faith to guide us. It is easy to see the differences among peo-ple, to set ourselves apart from others because of external or circumstantial differences. But what binds us together is stronger, removing our differences and revealing our true identity as sons and daughters of God. What binds us to-gether and makes us one is Christ Himself. It's not about being black or white, rich or poor, male or female. It's about living faith, loving others, praising God and seeing Christ in everyone. It's following the instructions of the Expert!

P lease pray for the sick of our parish....

The Pastor’s Page June 20, 2004 FATHERS

When the good Lord was creating fathers, He started with a tall frame. And a female angel nearby said, "What kind of father is that? If you’re going to make children so close to the ground, why have you put fathers up so high? He won’t be able to shoot marbles without kneeling, tuck a child in bed without bending, or even kiss a child without a lot of stooping."

And God smiled and said, "Yes, but if I make him child size, who would children have to look up to?" And when God made a father’s hands, they were large and sinewy. And the angel shook her head sadly and said, "Do You know what You’re doing? Large hands are clumsy. They can’t manage diaper pins, small buttons, rubber bands on pony tails or even remove splinters caused by baseball bats." God smiled and said, "I know, but they’re large enough to hold everything a small boy empties from his pockets at the end of a day…yet small enough to cup a child’s face." Then God molded long, slim legs and broad shoulders. The angel nearly had a heart attack. "Boy, this is the end of the week, all right," she clucked. "Do You realize You just made a father without a lap? How is he going to pull a child close to him without the kid falling between his legs?" God smiled and said, "A mother needs a lap. A father needs strong shoulders to pull a sled, balance a boy on a bicycle or hold a sleepy head on the way home from the circus." God was in the middle of creating two of the largest feet anyone had ever seen when the angel could contain herself no longer. "That’s not fair. Do You honestly think those large boats are going to dig out of bed early in the morning when the baby cries? Or walk through a small birthday party without crushing at least three of the guests?" And God smiled and said, "They’ll work. You’ll see. They’ll support a small child who wants to "ride a horse to Banbury Cross" or scare off mice at the summer cabin, or display shoes that will be a challenge to fill." God worked throughout the night, giving the father few words, but a firm authoritative voice; eyes that see everything, but remain calm and tolerant. Finally, almost as an afterthought, He added tears. Then He turned to the angel and said, "Now are you satisfied that he can love as much as a mother?" And the angel shutteth up!

Happy Father’s Day!

To all our dads and dads-to-be: May you have a wonderful Father’s Day and may God bless you for all the love you show to us!

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE Top ten things you'll never hear a dad say...

10. Well, how 'bout that? I'm lost! Looks like we'll have to stop and ask for directions.

9. You know Pumpkin, now that you're thirteen, you'll be ready for car dates. Won't that be fun?

8. I noticed that all your friends have a certain hostile attitude. I like that.

7. Here's a credit card and the keys to my car. GO CRAZY!

6. What do you mean you wanna play football? Figure skating's not good enough for you, son?

5. Your Mother and I are going away for the weekend. You might want to consider throwing a party.

4. Well, I don't know what's wrong with your car. Probably one of those doo-hickey thingies--ya know--that makes it run or something. Just have it towed to a mechanic and pay whatever he asks.

3. No son of mine is going to live under this roof without an earring. Now quit your belly-aching, and let's go to the mall.

2. Whaddya wanna go and get a job for? I make plenty of money for you to spend. Here's $100.

1. What do I want for Father's Day? Aahh -- don't worry about that. It's no big deal. (Okay, he might say it, but he doesn't mean it!)

STEWARDSHIP PRAYER

Gracious God, we thank you for the unique gifts you have given us to extend your Kingdom here on earth. May we be challenged to reconsider our priorities and values, always placing God and faith at the center of our life. Help us become more focused on loving and caring for our families and neighbors. Open our hearts to the realization that we are called to give up something of ourselves so that life can flourish. When we give this way we are changed, and we will make a difference in the lives of others.

Jesus, help us to commit ourselves to be good stewards of the gifts entrusted to us, to share our time, our talent and our treasure as an outward sign of our love for you.

4TH GRADERS VISIT THE STATE HOUSE

On May 21st, the 4th grade class traveled to Indianapolis where they visited the State House and the Indiana State Museum. In addition to a tour of the building, the students met Senator Frank Mrvan, Jr. and Secretary of State Todd Rokita. They were able to sit on the floor of both houses and in the Supreme Court. The students then went to the State Museum where they learned about Indiana’s history. The students learned about the state of Indiana while having a fun time.

Stone Soup

For the third year as part of one of the educational programs offered by the Lyric Opera of Chicago Education Program, our second grade class performed an opera. This year the opera was Stone Soup. The Lyric Opera of Chicago provided the full score. Parents and volunteers sewed costumes, put together the stage, wrote the program and assisted with lights and sound. Many students were involved with painting the scenery. The second graders had been learning the music in class since December. In late April they staged the production so that they were ready for their May performances.
