Fr. John Paul’s Spiritual Brew
I t began with the courage to say yes... Yes, to life, to love, and to the adventure that God called her to... She is a young Jewish girl living in a small community..
embracing the traditions and practices of her local surroundings... Her country’s under the control of the Romans, and she is trying to simply live her life. Into this ordinary life comes a stranger with an unusual request... “You will conceive a child, by the overshadowing of the Holy Spirit, and become the mother of the promised messiah, and Light of the World. An overwhelming request.. But, Mary, grounded in faith, prayer, and in the ‘concrete love’ of her experience of God in her life.. responds, Yes, “Be it done to me as you have said”. Her experience of God has been that of accompaniment, or Emmanuel! So, she agrees to become the vessel of cooperation for the Living Word to become flesh. Christmas celebrates this reality.. God in the flesh... born into the chaos of our world... Not complaining, nor resisting... Just coming.. He is the light that shatters the darkness... the hope which blows compression into hearts and lives that are flat... He is the Love that we are longing for, and the balm that heals ‘deeply’... when embraced and rubbed in.... May we rub in “The Christ” this Christmas, and into our New Year.... May the blessings of this season, take guard over our minds and hearts. Blessed Advent, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year!
