CHRISTMAS FLOWERS — Memorials or remembrances for our loved ones will be due NO LATER than December 10, 2017 in order that the booklet may be prepared. Thank you for your cooperation!

There’s a song written by the rock group Dire Straits that has the following lyrics: “sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug.” I felt like the bug last weekend! Saturday’s heavy storms and strong winds led to a surprise on Sunday morning: a pine tree in our front yard had come down overnight, just barely missing our parish sign as it fell!

At my Masses that day, I joked that we’d need a third collection to cover the costs of clean-up and tree removal! (Luckily, that wasn’t necessary — a number of people offered to help, and later that afternoon, members of the Hampton VFC, Station 164, walked across the street and cleared the tree and hauled it away (see photo, below)). A great big “thank you” goes out to everyone who offered to help, especially the volunteer firefighters who stepped up and helped us out!

During the Mass, I also mentioned something that folks have asked me about on occasion: why does the bulletin list our weekly offering need as “$15,000”, if we seem to do just fine with the $7k to $8k we get every week? This past weekend’s events are a good example of why we ask for that number: at this point, we’re trying to break even each week and keep ahead of the bill collectors. But, we don’t have enough income to put anything away for emergency expenses. The parish finance council and I have been talking about ways to help reflect our actual costs and our need for a “rainy day fund”. In the New Year, we’ll modify the way that we publicize that information in the bulletin, in order to give you a better idea of how our parish finances are shaping up.

Blessings, Fr. Larry

Jesus Christ is the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead

and ruler of the kings of the earth. --Revelation 1:5

CHRIST IS KING On the final Sunday of the liturgical year we celebrate the feast of Christ the King. It's easy to understand today's scriptures as events that happened long ago and far away, or predictions that will come true somewhere, some day. But they invite us to claim Christ as our King here and now. Jesus' words to Pilate in the Gospel remind us that his kingdom transcends time and place. And the prophecies from Daniel and Revelation give us reason to be faithful to Christ our King right here and right now. By concluding the year with this feast we are proclaiming our faith that Jesus Christ is the one and only King over all seasons, all peoples, and all of creation. No matter what nation we belong to or what language we speak, he "has made us into a kingdom" (Revelation 1:6) - one people united in love and peace for all eternity. (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. CHRIST, THE

UNCONVENTIONAL KING

Today we celebrate the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. What a magnificent

title for the God who created us and loves us to the end. Of course, Christ is the most unconventional king. Instead of being born in a palace, he was born among the animals in a manger. Instead of the security of soldiers and guards, he was accompanied by twelve simple men. Instead of being crowned with gold and jewels, he was crowned with thorns. And, as today’s Gospel reminds us, he did not want his face etched on coins or framed on walls, but instead wanted to be seen in the faces of those most in need. While Christ’s kingship is unconventional, his reign over us is effective as he lovingly shepherds us towards the kingdom. On Mission for The Church Alive! invites us to seek new and, at times, unconventional ways to reach out to our sisters and brothers and strengthen our relationships with each other and with our Lord and King. As Christ reigns in our hearts and in the world, may he shepherd us as we work t o f u l f i l l h i s m i s s i o n o f l o v e . Advent Angel

Oh Advent Angel come to me, Open my eyes that I may see

The Babe, Who born on Christmas day,

Lay in a manger in the hay And smiled upon the world so vast,

And in our hearts He cast A spell of peace and love.

Oh Advent Angel take my hand

And guide me with your heavenly band To my Saviour, newborn King,

Whose praises all your angels sing And will forever through all time—

Because He is our Lord sublime.
