I’m not really fond of using this space to talk about parish financial matters, but I think it’s important for me to be transparent about them with you. As we look at our financial health (you’ve been paying attention to the “parish stewardship” graphs, right?), there’s something that’s important to keep in mind: the upkeep of our school building. Although our students now attend our schools on Middle Road and Mt Royal Blvd (Blessed Trinity Academy), our parish is still responsible for the building that housed St Ursula School and which continues to house our CCD program (‘PREP’). That means that we continue to pay the utility bills, and when something breaks, we have to fix it. If you take a look at the stewardship graph on this page, you’ll notice an uptick in expenses this week. The boiler in our school broke, requiring repairs to the tune of $2,000. (This is in addition to the $5,000 we spent on heating costs last month in the school!) We’re doing our best to manage costs in the school building, but just like in your household, sometimes an unexpected expense pops up and it’s necessary to take care of it! Prior to the introduction of the stewardship graphs, our bulletin showed the amounts of our collections, and also set an artificial goal of $15,000 each week. That was an estimate that included not only our expenses, but also the desire to set aside a little bit each week “for a rainy day.” Our graph no longer attempts to include that ‘rainy day’ amount – it only shows the amount of our collections and the amount of our actual expenses. Well, last week, we had our “rainy day”. I know in my heart that we’re a vibrant, welcoming parish – but we’re just not a parish that has a ton of financial resources. This week, we talked about some financial challenges we’re dealing with – next week, I’ll share the good news of the financial successes we’ve achieved in the past year! Blessings, Fr. Larry

Advent Angel

Oh Advent Angel come to me, Open my eyes that I may see

The Babe, Who born on Christmas day,

Lay in a manger in the hay And smiled upon the world so vast,

And in our hearts He cast A spell of peace and love.

Oh Advent Angel take my hand

And guide me with your heavenly band To my Saviour, newborn King,

Whose praises all your angels sing And will forever through all time—

Because He is our Lord sublime.

Marilyn McNeil de Latour

For God So Loved the World – God the Father’s great act of love for us, his children, was sending his only Son, Jesus, into the world. By coming to earth, Christ humbles himself by taking on human flesh, yet he is able to show us a new and vibrant way of

life by teaching love without condition and mercy in all circumstances. The ultimate sign of this love comes as Jesus takes our sins, the sins of all the world upon himself and reconciles us to the Father as he suffers and dies on the cross. Then follows the light of the resurrection in which the gates of heaven are flung open so that we can live with God for ever. And while these moments happened once and for all some 2,000 years ago, God’s love for us did not end with the death of his Son. As Christ remains with us in the sacraments, so the love of God is alive and active for us in the same, powerful way. The love of God endures forever! As we prepare for the changes to come as part of the On Mission for The Church Alive! initiative, we are called to remember that God is always at work for us and through us. While we may face challenges, it is God who will strengthen the Church, so great is his love for us. Let us cooperate with him in the days to come to help the Church grow. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
