ASH WEDNESDAY – March 6, 2019

MASS TIMES

8:00 am Mass 12:00 Noon Mass 7:00 pm Mass

THE INSIDE SHOWS In this third Sunday of our reading from the Sermon on the Plain, Jesus speaks of the inner soul and its outer expression. He uses images as he teaches. He addresses all of us. Jesus sees a plumb line connecting the soul with the soul's expression-words and actions. He uses exaggeration to drive home his point. We are urged to clear out the debris that blinds us. He knows that we have an uncanny ability to be blind to our own weaknesses, though they be as big as a board. He knows, too, how willingly we seem to ferret out others' smallest speck-like flaws. And this, too, is for our general consumption; solid old goodness and solid old badness will show eventually. The old Latin saying, which echoes Jesus’ images, is true: “What is bred in the bone will out in the flesh.” By and by, the inside will show through. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

ASH WEDNESDAY — Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving: these disciplines, prescribed by Jesus himself in the Ser-mon on the Mount, along with strict instructions not to flaunt them in public to win recognition and praise (Matthew 6:1-18), have been embraced by all the saints at the beginning of every Lent for almost two thousand years. But mention Lent, and many react with a grimace or slight shudder — even now, years after official obligations have been reduced to a minimum! No wonder the Eastern Rite's "Lenten Announcement" sounds surprising: "Let us receive with joy, O faithful people, the divinely inspired announce-ment of Lent! The Lenten Spring shines forth! Begin the fast with joy! Let us fast from passions as well as food, tak-ing pleasure in the good works of the Spirit, and accom-plishing them. If you see a poor person, take pity. An en-emy, be reconciled. A friend gaining honor, don't be jeal-ous." A positive approach! May the saints help us keep such a Lent. Peter Scagnelli, (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co. LENTEN MEAGER MEALS AT ST. U — For the third year, St. Ursula Parish will be hosting Meager Meals throughout Lent on Fridays at 12:30pm in the Parish Social Hall, followed by Stations of the Cross at 2:00pm. Meager Meals consist of soup and bread, we may also offer a salad. Suggested donation is $3. Additional chefs are welcome!

LENTEN REGULATIONS

As the season of Lent draws near, it is helpful to recall the discipline of the Church with regards to fast, abstinence and other forms of penance. ASH WEDNESDAY and GOOD FRIDAY are days of fast and abstinence. The Fridays of Lent are days of abstinence in the United States. The obligation of abstinence (refraining from eating meat) begins at the age of 14. The law of fasting (limiting oneself to one full meal and two lighter meals) obliges all between the ages of 18-59. No one should consider this obligation lightly. Those individuals who have a medical condition in which fasting may be considered harmful are not obliged to fast, but should perform some other act of penance or charity. Pastors and parents are to see to it that minors, though not bound by the law of fast and abstinence, are educated in the authentic sense of penance and encouraged to do acts of penance suitable to their age. All members of the Christian Faithful are encouraged to do acts of penance and charity during the Lenten season beyond what is prescribed by the law. As a general rule, a request for a dispensation from the obligation of abstinence on Fridays of Lent will not be considered unless some serious reason is present. The attendance at social events, banquets, weddings, rehearsals or receptions are not considered sufficient reason to request a dispensation.

Every Tree Is Known By Its Own Fruit – In grade school catechism class you may have been asked to learn and memorize the Fruits of the Holy Spirit: love, joy, peace, pa-tience, kindness, goodness, faithful-ness, gentleness, self-control, long-

suffering, modesty and chastity. These 12 attributes are the means by which we come to understand how an individual is living in accord with the Holy Spirit. They are the work of God’s grace in our lives and the result of us tending to our hearts, making them fertile soil for the love of God to take root so that only good fruit can grow. Like any agri-cultural image that we use for faith, the Fruit of the Spirit requires both hard work and trust. A farmer works hard to till, plant, weed out and tend to his crops in order to reap a bountiful harvest. Yet, he also has to trust that the sun and rain will come in the necessary proportions to nourish what he has worked so hard to plant. For us, we have to work hard to weed out anything which seeks to harden our hearts or set up resistance to the work of the Spirit. Then, we must trust the ways in which the Spirit is at work to bear abun-dant good fruit in and through us. Nurturing the Fruit of the Spirit works for our good, the good of others and the good of the Church as we journey On Mis-sion for The Church Alive! Advent Angel

Oh Advent Angel come to me, Open my eyes that I may see

The Babe, Who born on Christmas day,

Lay in a manger in the hay And smiled upon the world so vast,

And in our hearts He cast A spell of peace and love.

Oh Advent Angel take my hand

And guide me with your heavenly band To my Saviour, newborn King,

Whose praises all your angels sing And will forever through all time—

Because He is our Lord sublime.
