Summer Supper on July 13, All Saints’ summertime monthly community meal, looked like an ideal service opportunity for members of the Youth Group and their leaders. And they jumped on it.

The students have committed to preparing most of the meal to feed about 50 guests (entree, vegetable and dessert) and filling half of the volunteer slots for that

night. Several members will go shopping with Advisor Troy DeFranco on July 11; two days later in the afternoon others will join Pastor Seth in the Gathering Space-kitchen to prepare supper. A handful of YG members also will help serve the meal and fill other volunteer positions that evening.

At press-time no decisions had been made regarding recipes but it’s a good bet that the grills on the lower-level patio will be pressed into service to prepare the chicken entrée. Their grilling experience has been gained from the traditional brats and burgers cook-out they have prepared for guests in the PADS shelter on the last night of the season.

Members of the congregation are invited to join the community for Summer Supper, which is served starting at 6:30 p.m., prior to attending Holden Evening Prayer, which begins at 7:30 p.m.

Summer Suppers on Aug, 10, and Sept, 14, offer the congregation opportuni-ties for both volunteering and food donations. No training is required for volunteers; Confirmation students, volunteering with a parent, can accumulate service hours by participating. The sign-up book on the narthex table has additional information. Or ask one of the co-directors, Monika Fiedler or Tom Germuska.

If you’re unable to participate in Summer Suppers directly, cash donations are used to purchase food when necessary because donations fall short. Use a pew envelope; put Summer Suppers on the memo line of checks made payable to All Saints.

Preparing for 2016-17 PADS season Shelter opens Oct. 1; new volunteers, leaders sought

Preparation for another PADS season has begun, said Tom Germuska, one of the Co-Site Directors for the homeless shelter hosted at All Saints every Saturday night during the cold-weather months. “We’re looking for some new Volunteer Coordinators to help us keep the shelter operating smoothly,” he said, “and we’re always recruiting new volunteers.”

Volunteer Coordinators help assure that the shelter is fully-staffed each week-end by making a few telephone calls to remind volunteers of the commitment they have made. Coordinators are needed for the Early Riser (3-7 a.m.) shift and for the Clean-up crews on Sunday morning.

New shelter volunteers, adults and high school students who want to work directly with our guests, must attend an orientation conducted by Journeys | The Road Home, the agency which provides administrative and support services for the network of 18 shelters operated by faith communities such as All Saints. A list of the dates and times Journeys will offer new-volunteer orientation during the summer is available at www.journeystheroadhome.org. Details about a change to the agency’s policy regarding youth volunteers will be announced later in the summer.

Each week the shelter is open, between Oct. 1, and April 29, 2017, we will need 10-12 volunteers working 2½ - 4 hour shifts on Saturday night and Sunday morning, said Monika Fiedler, the shelter’s other co-director; and another three-four helping with clean up on Sunday morning, in addition to the Leadership Team. We also need about a dozen food donors each week, she added.

In an ideal world we’d have pool of about 100 volunteers each helping on one shift each month, she said. But things haven’t been ideal in recent seasons and we’re at risk of “burning-out” some of the volunteers who have stepped in to pick up the slack.

For more information about how you can become involved in All Saints’ minis-try to homeless men and women in our community contact either Monika Fiedler or Tom Germuska or send an email to [email protected].

Committees Need You

Do you have a few hours a month to make All Saints a stronger place? We could use your help. You could help by joining a committee. It’s not as boring as it sounds. Each committee operates a little differently, but mostly you meet once per month and share your ideas and perhaps take on a small task or two. That’s it. But it makes a world of difference. If you’d like to help, we could use you with our Worship, Property (building mainte-nance), Outreach (making All Saints known in the community), Stewardship (helping us use all of our time and talents and treasure wisely), Technology (computers and IT), Financial Support (money, money, money), Learning, Social Ministry and oth-er Committees. Talk with either of the pastors and we’ll get you hooked up.

Daily Email

Devotionals and

Conversation Each day (Monday through Friday), Pastor Jenn or Pastor Seth write a brief daily email devotional that is sent out via email. The scripture texts for these reflections are based on the daily lectionary, designed to tie in to and build upon the readings from the Sundays. If you'd like to receive these and are not currently, please send an e-mail to [email protected]. For those interested, we also have a conversational component.

You can also read the devotionals at aslcdevotions.blogspot.com. Here, you can also leave comments either for the pastors or for other members and reflect back on what we've written. Join in the conversation and make the Bible a part of your daily life.

Journeys appeals for help to

save Thursday shelter site Journeys | The Road Home, the agency providing services for homeless persons in our community and those at risk of becoming homeless, is reach-ing out for help to assure that one of its 18 shelter sites can remain open.

Amy Pratt, shelter manager for Journeys, said that, unless a new leadership team and additional volunteers can be identified, the shelter at Congregational United Church of Christ in Arlington Heights is at risk of closing. CUCC has been one of two Thursday-night shelters which combined ac-commodated an average of 74 guests each week last season. Clearly, without CUCC many guests will be without shelter and food on Thursday nights in the 2016-2017 season.

Pratt said that Journeys is seeking Co-Site Direc-tors for CUCC as well as several other members of their Leadership Team and additional shelter volun-teers. For detailed information about how you or someone you know might help contact Amy Pratt, 847-963-9163, ext. 121, or [email protected].

Palatine Street Fest All Saints will be introducing itself to the communi-ty at Palatine Street Fest August 27th & 28th. All Saints members are needed to serve as ambassa-dors for two hours shifts from 11:00 am to 6:oo pm on Saturday and 11:00 am to 5:00 pm on Sun-day.

Save the date and look for the ambassador signup to be part of this event.
